Thermal Diffusivities of Functionalized Pentacene Semiconductors
We have measured the interlayer and in-plane (needle axis) thermal
diffusivities of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-Pn). The
needle axis value is comparable to the phonon thermal conductivities of
quasi-one dimensional organic metals with excellent pi-orbital overlap, and its
value suggests that a significant fraction of heat is carried by optical
phonons. Furthermore, the interlayer (c-axis) thermal diffusivity is at least
an order of magnitude larger, and this unusual anisotropy implies very strong
dispersion of optical modes in the interlayer direction, presumably due to
interactions between the silyl-containing side groups. Similar values for both
in-plane and interlayer diffusivities have been observed for several other

A variational problem on Stiefel manifolds
In their paper on discrete analogues of some classical systems such as the
rigid body and the geodesic flow on an ellipsoid, Moser and Veselov introduced
their analysis in the general context of flows on Stiefel manifolds. We
consider here a general class of continuous time, quadratic cost, optimal
control problems on Stiefel manifolds, which in the extreme dimensions again
yield these classical physical geodesic flows. We have already shown that this
optimal control setting gives a new symmetric representation of the rigid body
flow and in this paper we extend this representation to the geodesic flow on
the ellipsoid and the more general Stiefel manifold case. The metric we choose
on the Stiefel manifolds is the same as that used in the symmetric
representation of the rigid body flow and that used by Moser and Veselov. In
the extreme cases of the ellipsoid and the rigid body, the geodesic flows are
known to be integrable. We obtain the extremal flows using both variational and
optimal control approaches and elucidate the structure of the flows on general
Stiefel manifolds.Comment: 30 page
vbyCaHbeta CCD Photometry of Clusters. VIII. The Super-Metal Rich, Old Open Cluster NGC 6791
CCD photometry on the intermediate-band vbyCaHbeta system is presented for
the metal-rich, old open cluster, NGC 6791. Preliminary analysis led to [Fe/H]
above +0.4 with an anomalously high reddening and an age below 5 Gyr. A revised
calibration between (b-y)_0 and [Fe/H] at a given temperature shows that the
traditional color-metallicity relations underestimate the color of the turnoff
stars at high metallicity. With the revised relation, the metallicity from hk
and the reddening for NGC 6791 become [Fe/H] = +0.45 +/- 0.04 and E(b-y) =
0.113 +/- 0.012 or E(B-V) = 0.155 +/- 0.016. Using the same technique,
reanalysis of the photometry for NGC 6253 produces [Fe/H] = +0.58 +/-0.04 and
E(b-y) = 0.120 +/- 0.018 or E(B-V) = 0.160 +/- 0.025. The errors quoted include
both the internal and external errors. For NGC 6791, the metallicity from m_1
is a factor of two below that from hk, a result that may be coupled to the
consistently low metal abundance from DDO photometry of the cluster and the
C-deficiency found from high dispersion spectroscopy. E(B-V) is the same value
predicted from Galactic reddening maps. With E(B-V) = 0.15 and [Fe/H] = +0.45,
the available isochrones predict an age of 7.0 +/- 1.0 Gyr and an apparent
modulus of (m-M) = 13.60 +/- 0.15, with the dominant source of the uncertainty
arising from inconsistencies among the isochrones. The reanalysis of NGC 6253
with the revised lower reddening confirms that on both the hk and m_1
metallicity scales, NGC 6253, while less than half the age of NGC 6791, remains

On the Role of Higher Twist in Polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering
The higher twist corrections to the spin dependent proton and
neutron structure functions are extracted in a model
independent way from experimental data on and found to be
non-negligible. It is shown that the NLO QCD polarized parton densities
determined from the data on g1, including higher twist effects, are in good
agreement with those found earlier from our analysis of the data on g1/F1 and
A1 where higher twist effects are negligible. On the contrary, the LO QCD
polarized parton densities obtained from the data on g1, including higher

Influence of Sex/Gender and Race on Responses to Raltegravir Combined With Tenofovir-Emtricitabine in Treatment-Naive Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 Infected Patients: Pooled Analyses of the STARTMRK and QDMRK Studies.
BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral therapy in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected women and blacks merits particular scrutiny because these groups have been underrepresented in clinical trials.
METHODS: To document the effects of raltegravir across sex and racial lines, we conducted a pooled subgroup analysis of the efficacy and safety of raltegravir 400 mg BID plus tenofovir-emtricitabine by sex (women vs men) and self-identified race (black vs non-black) using phase 3 studies in treatment-naive patients.
RESULTS: Study participants included 42 black women, 102 non-black women, 48 black men, and 477 non-black men. Clade B infections were less common in women (43.8%) than men (84.6%) and in blacks (45.6%) than non-blacks (80.5%). Baseline CD4 counts were ≤200 cells/µL in 52.2% of blacks and 31.6% of non-blacks. Black men had the largest proportion of patients with baseline CD4 counts/µL and the highest nontreatment-related discontinuation rate among the 4 sex-by-race subgroups. Human immunodeficiency virus-ribonucleic acid levels/mL were achieved at week 48 in 92.7% (95% confidence interval [CI], 80.1-98.5) of black women, 93.6% (95% CI, 86.6-97.6) of non-black women, 82.9% (95% CI, 67.9-92.8) of black men, and 91.4% (95% CI, 88.4-93.8) of non-black men. Serious clinical adverse events were reported in 9.0% of women versus 8.8% of men and in 11.1% of blacks versus 8.5% of non-blacks.
CONCLUSIONS: In this post hoc analysis of patients with previously untreated HIV-1 infection receiving raltegravir plus tenofovir-emtricitabine, generally comparable results were achieved across sex and racial subgroups. However, black men had a lower response rate than either black women or non-black men, partially attributable to lower baseline CD4 counts and higher discontinuation rates
