Studies on Additive Manufacturing of Hard and Soft Scaffold for Tissue Engineering Applications

Tissue engineering is a field that allows us to look into the future for regenerative medicine. It may become possible to regenerate or replace damaged tissues with laboratory- grown parts such as bone, cartilage, blood vessels and skin using this technology. It essentially tries to create friendly and conducive environment for controlled growth of cells with the help of connective tissues and collagenous scaffolds. Additive Manufacturing method with its ability to add material at desired location to make a component is best suited for creating such a scheme for cell culture. It has a unique ability to precisely control of the matrix architecture like size, shape, inter connectivity, branching, geometry and orientation. Ewing\u27s sarcoma arising from the adrenal gland in a young male: a case report

Background: Ewing\u27s sarcoma uncommonly arises from extraosseous soft tissue or parenchymal organs. Primary adrenal Ewing\u27s Sarcoma, although very rare, is extremely aggressive and commonly fatal. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17 year old Pakistani male was referred to the outpatient oncology clinic at our center with a three month history of concomitant pain, swelling and dragging sensation in the right hypochondrium. Abdominal examination revealed a large, firm mass in the right hypochondrium extending into the right lumbar region and epigastrium. His genital exam was unremarkable and there were no stigmata of hepatic or adrenal disease.Computed tomography scans revealed a large peripherally enhancing mass in the hepatorenal area, biopsy of which showed a neoplastic lesion composed of small round blue cells which exhibited abundance of glycogen and stained diffusely positive for CD99 (MIC2 antigen). Fluorescence in situ hybridization demonstrated gene rearrangement at chromosome 22q12 which confirmed the diagnosis of Ewing\u27s sarcoma. Staging scans revealed pulmonary metastasis and hence he was commenced on systemic chemotherapy. CONCLUSION: This case report highlights the importance of keeping Ewing\u27s sarcoma in mind when a young patient presents with a large non-functional adrenal mass

A Case Report Of A Giant Plunging Ranula In A 25-Year-Old Patient: A case report

Abstract This case report aims to present an unusual case of a plunging ranula that extended to the superior vertebral body of the T4 vertebrae, we will be elaborating on the patient presentation, investigations, diagnosis, and treatment of the lesion, while also talking about the adversities faced while diagnosing and treating the patient. The rarity of this condition and an atypical presentation makes this a difficult case to diagnose and vigilant treatment is needed to prevent any complications associated with the condition and ensure a successful treatment and recovery

Redo coronary artery surgery; early and intermediate outcomes from a tertiary care hospital in a developing country

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes of re-operative coronary artery surgery in a tertiary care hospital in a developing country. METHOD: Preoperative, intra-operative and postoperative variables were analyzed in 82 consecutive patients who underwent re-operative coronary surgery on cardiopulmonary bypass. RESULTS: The mean age was 63.3 +/- 7.7 years, 91.2% were male and 9.8% female. Coronary artery disease risk factors were present in more than 50% of the patients. History of preoperative myocardial infarction was positive in 56% patients. There was strong clinical and angiographic indication for surgery with unstable angina in 50% patients and \u3e 80% had multivessel disease. Only 5% patients were in functional class I. The risk stratification showed a mean Euro score of 8. The IABP was used in 20% patients. A mean of 3.1 grafts per patient were applied. The median cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and aortic cross clamp time was 144 minutes respectively. Postoperative mortality was 7.3%. Short-term follow up revealed 74% of the patients in NYHA functional class I. CONCLUSION: Reoperative coronary artery bypass grafting is challenging but with expertise, team effort can be performed with good functional outcome

Recent Advances in Decontamination of Chemical Warfare Agents

The recent turmoil and volatile situation in many countries and the increased risk of terrorist activities have raised alarm bells for the field of defense against toxic chemical/materials. These situations poses threats to society as terrorists can take advantage of such situations to strike and cause public mayhem. A number of chemicals have the potential of being used as chemical warfare (CW) agents. CW agents could immediately kill or incapacitate the affected individuals even when they are present in very low concentration. CW agents should be removed quickly to minimize their deleterious health effect. There is no single decontamination system that can be used against all types of chemical warfare (CW) agents. Serum Alpha 1 Antitrypsin and Pulmonary Emphysema

Using isoelectric focusing (lEE) and radial immunodiffusion (RID) techniques, serum samples from 100 normal healthy adults and 21 patients with pulmonary emphysema were analysed to identify varioud alpha 1 antitrypsin phenotypes and the Seru m concentrations,Ten percent of the patients had low serum values. The normal or most common genetic form, MM, is the predominant phenotype in both controls and patients (JPMA 46:102, 1996)
