Motor skills in children affected by strabismus
Objectives: To compare motor skills in patients with infantile strabismus and age and sex-matched control subjects aged 5â11 years. Methods: Motor performances were assessed by the Italian version of Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire 2007 (DCDQ) in children with infantile strabismus and age and sex-matched control subjects. Patients affected by specific neurological, cognitive and behavioural disorders were excluded from the study. Results: There were 43 patients included in the study, 23 in the strabismus group (14 males, 9 females, mean age 7.5 ± 2.0 years) and 24 in the control group (14 males and 10 females, mean age 7.2 ± 1.7 years. The overall DCDQ score was significantly lower in children with strabismus compared with control subjects (58.7 ± 11.3 vs. 74.2 ± 1.5; P < 0.001). Children with strabismus and no stereopsis showed a lower DCDQ score compared with those with normal stereopsis (50.8 ± 9.5 vs. 67.3 ± 4.8; P < 0.001). Conclusion: Motor skills are reduced in children with strabismus compared with control subjects. Strabismus and lack of binocular vision are factors potentially contributing to developmental coordination disorder
The magnetic structure of the chain family NaCaVO determined by muon-spin rotation
We present muon-spin rotation measurements on polycrystalline samples of the
complete family of the antiferromagnetic (AF) chain compounds,
NaCaVO. In this family, we explore the magnetic properties
from the metallic NaVO to the insulating CaVO. We find a
critical which separates the low and high Na-concentration
dependent transition temperature and its magnetic ground state. In the
compounds, the magnetic ordered phase is characterized by a single homogenous
phase and the formation of incommensurate spin-density-wave order. Whereas in
the compounds, multiple sub-phases appear with temperature and .
Based on the muon data obtained in zero external magnetic field, a careful
dipolar field simulation was able to reproduce the muon behavior and indicates
a modulated helical incommensurate spin structure of the metallic AF phase. The
incommensurate modulation period obtained by the simulation agrees with that

Antioxidant levels from different Antarctic fish caught around South Georgia Island and Shag Rocks
Antarctic fish have been isolated for over several million years in an environment with a very low and constant temperature and high oxygen concentration. In such conditions the oxidative stress might be an important factor affecting their metabolic adaptive strategies. Activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), vitamin E levels and total antioxidant capacity (TRAP) were measured in liver, gill, heart and muscle homogenates of red-blooded (Nototheniidae) and white-blooded (Channichthyidae) Antarctic fish. SOD activity was also measured in blood samples. Gill SOD activity was threefold higher in channichthyids than in nototheniids while CAT and GPx were significantly higher in the gills of channichthyids. The increased SOD activity of channichthyids probably reflects the large PO2 gradient across their gills. The H2O2 produced seems to be preferentially eliminated by diffusion, according to the low levels of CAT and GPx found in the gills of these species. In contrast, blood SOD was about fivefold higher in the latter group, which possesses erythrocytes and thus a much higher oxygen-carrying capacity. CAT activity was always higher in nototheniids except in muscle. However, vitamin E did not show clear differences between families except for the pattern observed in muscle. The higher content of vitamin E in this tissue shown in channichthyids is related to the higher volume density of mitochondria reported for this group, since vitamin E is responsible for preventing membrane lipid peroxidation. Accordingly, TRAP (representative of hydrosoluble antioxidant capacity) was also higher in muscle of channichthyids. Two dimensionality in quasi one-dimensional cobalt oxides
By means of muon spin rotation and relaxation (SR) techniques, we have
investigated the magnetism of quasi one-dimensional (1D) cobalt oxides
CoO (=Ca, Sr and Ba, =1, 2, 3, 5 and
), in which the 1D CoO chain is surrounded by six equally spaced
chains forming a triangular lattice in the -plane, using polycrystalline
samples, from room temperature down to 1.8 K. For the compounds with =1 - 5,
transverse field SR experiments showed the existence of a magnetic
transition below 100 K. The onset temperature of the transition () was found to decrease with ; from 100 K for =1 to 60 K for
=5. A damped muon spin oscillation was observed only in the sample with
=1 (CaCoO), whereas only a fast relaxation obtained even at 1.8
K in the other three samples. In combination with the results of susceptibility
measurements, this indicates that a two-dimensional short-range
antiferromagnetic (AF) order appears below for all
compounds with =1 - 5; but quasi-static long-range AF order formed only in
CaCoO, below 25 K. For BaCoO (=), as decreased
from 300 K, 1D ferromagnetic (F) order appeared below 53 K, and a sharp 2D AF

New polyaniline (PANi) synthesis was performed starting from non-toxic N-phenil-p-phenylenediamine (aniline dimer) using reverse addition of monomer to oxidizing agent, the synthesis allows to produce highly soluble PANi. Several types of doped PANi were prepared to be used on electromechanical active actuators. Different techniques were used to include carbon nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes and graphene. Bimorph solid state ionic actuators were prepared with these novel nanocomposites using a variety of supporting polymer
The magnetic phase of the perovskite CaCrO studied with SR
We investigated the magnetic phase of the perovskite CaCrO by using the
muon spin relaxation technique accompanied by susceptibility measurements. A
thermal hysteresis loop is identified with a width of about 1 K at the
transition temperature. Within the time scale of the muon lifetime, a static
antiferromagnetic order is revealed with distinct multiple internal fields
which are experienced in the muon interstitial sites below the phase-transition
temperature, . Above , lattice deformations are indicated by
transverse-field muon-spin rotation and relaxation suggesting a magneto-elastic

Evaluation of muscle aging with TD NIRS and DCS
Muscle aging is characterized by the loss of muscle mass and strength that starts mostly after 50yr and, according to the World Health Organization (2000), it is one of the major causes of independence loss and a risk factor for the development of morbidities at older age. Early diagnosis and treatment are paramount for the progression of the disease. The âTrajector-AGEâ project focuses on the study of neuromuscular decline in middle-aged and old populations. Within this project, different techniques are exploited to investigate muscle health (e.g., biopsy, electromyography, Near Infrared Spectroscopy), and among them, Time Domain Near Infrared Spectroscopy (TD-NIRS) and diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) are non-invasive optical techniques which enable to assess muscle oxidative metabolism and perfusion respectively. During the project life, we plan to recruit 100 individuals to evaluate differences among the hemodynamics and microcirculation responses of the vastus lateralis to arterial occlusion and incremental cycling in different age-groups (55â60yrs, middle-aged population; 75-80yrs, old population). The main parameters extrapolated will be the time courses for oxy- (HbO2), deoxy- (HHb), total- hemoglobin (tHb), tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) and blood flow index (BFI). From these, biomarkers for the neuromuscular decline will be defined. At the time of this work, 21 subjects were already acquired. Here, we present the preliminary results from 1 healthy volunteer
Live Wire - A Low-Complexity Body Channel Communication System for Landmark Identification
This paper presents a robust simplex Body Channel Communication (BCC) system aimed at providing an interactive infrastructure solution for visually impaired people. Compared to existing BCC solutions, it provides high versatility, weara- bility and installability in an environment in a low complexity hardware-software solution. It operates with a ground referred transmitter (TX) and it is based on an asynchronous thresh- old receiver (RX) architecture. Synchronization, demodulation and packetizing and threshold control are completely software defined and implemented using MicroPython. The RX includes BluetoothÂź (BT) radio connectivity and a cell-phone application provides push text-to-speech notifications to a smartphone. The hardware achieves a Packet Error Rate (PER) of âŒ0.1 at 550 kHz pulse center frequency, Synchronized-On Off Keying (S- OOK) modulation and 1 kbps data rate, for an average current consumption of 44mA
