Operationalizing Human Rights and Human Security Through a Dynamic Model of Health

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities challenges nations and the global community to address the long-standing, systemic discrimination and disenfranchisement experienced by disabled people throughout the world. This can be accomplished by understanding and paying attention to the dynamics linking human security and social inclusion. A healthy and secure society is one in which the needs of individuals are met and their contributions are encouraged and recognized. It upholds the value of diversity and recognizes that the extent to which every person realizes his or her unique potential, and the capacity of society to accommodate and honor that person's contribution, is the ultimate measure of health, both for the individual and for society. This paper draws on the Dynamic Model of Health (Burke, Bach, Colman, McKie, & Ward Stewart, 2000) that roots health in the values of self-determination, equality, and democratization and in community processes that support social solidarity and inclusion as a framework for analyzing the existing situation of disabled peoples and the way forward. It presents work currently being undertaken in a project aimed at developing an "inclusive" Kyrgyzstan, drawing on work that operationalized the Dynamic Model of Health and the BIAS FREE Framework (Eichler & Burke, 2005; Burke & Eichler, 2006) in the context of disabled children. The paper calls into question the existing health and development model that perpetuates benefits for a few and leaves disabled peoples off the agenda. It argues that the logic of domination underlying all forms of discrimination and oppression is the same in all instances, although the types of discrimination are specific to a particular hierarchy –whether it is built on disability, gender, race, or other factors – and historical or cultural context. Understanding how to "get it right" for disabled peoples will point the way to improving human security more broadly

Children’s Voices through play-based practice:listening, intensities and critique

Purpose: This paper offers a reflection of a research process aimed at listening to young children's voices in their everyday school life through a play-based context in a Scottish school. Throughout the research process, the complexity of conducting this research was kept in mind as listening to children's voices presents methodological and conceptual difficulties and tensions. Reflecting on the research process after the data was collected, the process was critiqued using Deleuze-Guattarian ideas. The critique aims at opening and challenging each researcher, allowing them to think-again about the next research project aimed at listening to children's voices. Design/methodology/approach: The research involved an observation study that took place over one week in a primary school in Central Scotland. As part of the educators' approach to play-based pedagogy, children had the opportunity to engage in free play throughout the day. Observations were chosen as the main approach to “capture” children's voices in their natural settings. Findings: The empirical research brought forth two main ideas, that of children as agents, and how children amplify their voices through play. The reflective part offers the possibility of understanding the intensities and forces when conducting such research and the possibilities of engaging with these. Originality/value: This paper offers a critique of research aimed at listening to children's voices. The aim is not to limit engagement in researching children's voices but to open, or make complex, such processes.</p

An assessment of the value of retail ready packaging

Eng. in Logistics)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2008.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 78-79).Use of retail-ready packaging reduces the costs of replenishing store shelves by eliminating the labor of removing packaging materials and stocking individual items on shelves. While reducing costs for retailers, retail-ready packaging formats increase costs for consumer products manufacturers. This research project assesses the use of retail-ready packaging across varying retailer types and products to determine conditions where the value of retail-ready packaging is maximized. Taking into account the supply chain benefits and costs for the retailer, six U.S. retail channels were selected for study: supermarket, wholesale club, limited assortment, super warehouse, drug and supercenter. One retailer from each of these categories was studied. The research found a wide range in opportunity for benefits and costs. The important factors influencing the net value of retail-ready packaging for retailers were product velocity, inventory carrying costs, SKU assortment relative to retail space and store replenishment procedures.by Kathleen Anne Jackson and Ling Bai Burke.M.Eng.in Logistic
