    We analyse welfare effects of the interactions between the tax system and inflation in Poland and in Ukraine, using the framework developed by Feldstein (1997, 1999). This approach stresses the fact that inflation increases distortions created by the tax system, in particular distortions to intertemporal saving decisions. We find that the effects are much smaller in the two transition countries than in developed marketeconomies. The reason is that taxation of investment returns is much more limited.     Chaos onset in large rings of Bose-Einstein condensates

    We consider large rings of weakly-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, analyzing their transition to chaotic dynamics and loss of coherence. Initially, a ring is considered to be in an eigenstate, i.e. in a commensurate configuration with equal site fillings and equal phase differences between neighboring sites. Such a ring should exhibit a circulating current whose value will depend on the initial, non-zero phase difference. The appearance of such currents is a signature of an established coherence along the ring. If phase difference falls between π/2\pi/2 and 3π/23\pi/2 and interparticle interaction in condensates exceeds a critical interaction value ucu_c, the coherence is supposed to be quickly destroyed because the system enters a chaotic regime due to inherent instabilities. This is, however, only a part of the story. It turns out that chaotic dynamics and resulting averaging of circular current to zero is generally offset by a critical time-scale tct_c, which is almost two orders of magnitude larger than the one expected from the linear stability analysis.     Bowen’s disease in dermoscopy

    Bowen’s disease, named after John Templeton Bowen, also known as squamous cell carcinoma in situ is a type of non-melanocytic intraepidermal malignancy. It is estimated that in general population around 3% to 5% of Bowen’s disease transform into invasive squamous cell cancer. Dermoscopy aims in the identification of the Bowen’s disease. The most typical dermoscopic features of Bowen’s disease include glomerular vessels and scaly surface.  Although dermoscopy of Bowen’s disease has been well established other skin lesions may present similar or identical structures in dermoscpic images leading to differential diagnosis dilemmas. Histopathological confirmation should be obtained prior the treatment of suspected cases of Bowen’s disease in order to avoid a misdiagnosis. </p

    Single-crystal X-ray diffraction structural results for benzidine dihydrochloride, hydrated and protonated N,N,N,N-peri(dimethylamino)naphthalene chloride, triptycene, dichlorodimethyltriptycene and decamethylferrocene have been analysed. A critical discussion of the dependence of structural and thermal parameters on resolution for these compounds is presented. Results of refinements against X-ray data, cut off to different resolutions from the high-resolution data files, are compared to structural models derived from neutron diffraction experiments. The Independent Atom Model (IAM) and the Transferable Aspherical Atom Model (TAAM) are tested. The average differences between the X-ray and neutron structural parameters (with the exception of valence angles defined by H atoms) decrease with the increasing 2θmax angle. The scale of differences between X-ray and neutron geometrical parameters can be significantly reduced when data are collected to the higher, than commonly used, 2θmax diffraction angles (for Mo Kα 2θmax > 65°). The final structural and thermal parameters obtained for the studied compounds using TAAM refinement are in better agreement with the neutron values than the IAM results for all resolutions and all compounds. By using TAAM, it is still possible to obtain accurate results even from low-resolution X-ray data. This is particularly important as TAAM is easy to apply and can routinely be used to improve the quality of structural investigations [Dominiak (2015). LSDB from UBDB. University of Buffalo, USA]. We can recommend that, in order to obtain more adequate (more accurate and precise) structural and displacement parameters during the IAM model refinement, data should be collected up to the larger diffraction angles, at least, for Mo Kα radiation to 2θmax = 65° (sin θmax/λ < 0.75 Å−1). The TAAM approach is a very good option to obtain more adequate results even using data collected to the lower 2θmax angles. Also the results of translation–libration–screw (TLS) analysis and vibrational entropy values are more reliable for 2θmax > 65°

    Digital Flourishing: Conceptualizing and Assessing Positive Perceptions of Mediated Social Interactions

    Recent research started to apply concepts of well-being to the context of computer mediated communication (e.g., social media, instant messaging). While much research investigates negative perceptions of mediated social interactions (e.g., “problematic” or “addictive” social media use), a multi-dimensional measure that taps into users? positive perceptions is sorely lacking. The present research therefore develops the first comprehensive measure of digital flourishing, defined as positive perceptions of mediated social interactions. Building on a qualitative pre-study that aided the construction of the Digital Flourishing Scale (DFS), Study 1 (N = 474) employed exploratory factor analysis to reveal five subdimensions of digital flourishing. The preregistered Study 2 (N = 438) confirmed these five dimensions, yielding five reliable items per subscale and initial construct validity with three psychological needs from self-determination theory (SDT; competence, autonomy, relatedness) which were used as an underlying well-being framework for the development of the DFS. The preregistered Study 3 generated further construct validity by directly relating DFS to well-being. The scale is relevant for researchers and practitioners alike to better understand how users perceive their mediated interactions to impact mental health and well-being

    Is copeptin a new potential biomarker of insulin resistance in polycystic ovary syndrome?

    Objectives: Copeptin has been reported to play an important role in metabolic response in women with PCOS. However, the optimal cut-off value for detecting subjects with insulin resistance (IR) remains undetermined. We investigated whether copeptin can serve as an indicator of IR and tried to determine the optimal cut-off value of plasma copeptin concentration in detecting subjects with PCOS and IR.  Material and methods: We carried out a case-control study on 158 women with PCOS and HOMA-IR &lt; 2.5, 96 women with PCOS with HOMA-IR ≥ 2.5, and 70 healthy volunteers. Plasma copeptin, as well as hormonal, biochemical, metabolic, and IR parameters, were measured. To investigate whether copeptin allows IR to be predicted in PCOS, we used logistic regression models and ROC curve analysis.  Results: Median plasma copeptin concentration was the highest in the women with PCOS and HOMA-IR ≥ 2.5. Logistic regression analysis revealed that copeptin was the strongest predictor of HOMA ≥ 2.5 (OR: 53.34 CI 7.94–358.23, p &lt; 0.01). Analysis of ROC curves indicated that the cut-off value above 4 pmol/L of plasma copeptin concentration had high (99%) specificity but very low (21%) sensitivity in diagnosing of IR (AUC 0.607 (95% CI 0.53–0.68.  Conclusions: Our findings suggest that copeptin is associated with IR in PCOS patients, but due to low sensitivity should not be considered as a marker of IR.

    DNA Damage/Repair and Polymorphism of the hOGG1 Gene in Lymphocytes of AMD Patients

    Oxidative stress is thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We determined the extent of oxidative DNA damage and the kinetics of its removal as well as the genotypes of the Ser326Cys polymorphism of the hOGG1 gene in lymphocytes of 30 wet AMD patients and 30 controls. Oxidative DNA damage induced by hydrogen peroxide and its repair were evaluated by the comet assay and DNA repair enzymes. We observed a higher extent of endogenous oxidative DNA damage and a lower efficacy of its repair in AMD patients as compared with the controls. We did not find any correlation between the extent of DNA damage and efficacy of DNA repair with genotypes of the Ser326Cys polymorphism. The results obtained suggest that oxidative DNA damage and inefficient DNA repair can be associated with AMD and the variability of the hOOG1 gene may not contribute to this association
