Lobbying on Behalf of the Faithful: Three Mainline Protestant Denominations and their Advocacy Efforts on Capitol Hill during the 110th Congress
A number of mainline Protestant denominations engage in direct lobbying and grassroots advocacy efforts with Congress on behalf of the poor and other marginalized groups. This study explores the work of three specific denominations the Presbyterian Church [PC(USA)], the United Church of Christ (UCC), and the United Methodist Church (UMC), as religious special interests. Specifically, the study explores how they facilitated their policy agendas on Capitol Hill during the 110th Congress (2007-2008). This question is answered primarily through interviews with and surveys of the professional staff engaged in this work during that session. Results indicate that each denomination works extensively through denominational and coalition groups, together with grassroots constituencies, to further the policy agenda of each. Drawing on the prophetic strand of the Christian tradition and speaking with its moral authority are unique elements of mainline Protestant denominations as interest groups. Though each has its particular history, theology and polity, all three struggle with common concerns including strained financial resources, constraints imposed by denominational bureaucracy and factionalism, and a lack of visibility and leveraging power in the midst of other more powerful and well-financed interest groups. The study concludes with possibilities for strengthening the effectiveness of denominational lobbying efforts and recommendations for further research
Launch of policy toolkit: poverty and inequality reduction policies
This toolkit examines policies with a potential 'double dividend': policies that could lead to reductions in both poverty and inequality in the UK. The selection of policies has been informed by a larger research programme which has explored the relationship between inequalities and poverty. This research not only identified a positive empirical relationship between poverty and inequality it also reviewed evidence on potential mechanisms that might drive this relationship

Pediatric calcaneal fractures
Although operative treatment of displaced, intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus in adults is generally accepted as standard practice, operative treatment for the same fractures in the skeletally immature remains controversial, potentially because the outcome for fracture types (intra- vs. extra-articular) and severity (displaced vs. nondisplaced) have been confounded in studies of children. We review herein the results of 21 displaced, intra-articular fractures in 18 skeletally immature patients, who were treated with open reduction and internal fixation using a standard surgical approach and protocol developed for adults. The average pre-operative Böhler's angle on the injured side was â5° (range: â35 â +35) compared to 31° (range: +22 â +47) on the uninjured side, indicating substantial displacement. There were no post-operative infections or wound healing problems, and all but one patient was followed to union (average follow-up: 1.5 years; range: 0.30â4.3 years). Maintenance of reduction was confirmed on follow-up radiographs with an average Böhler's angle of 31° (range: +22 â +49). We demonstrate that results for operative fixation of displaced, intra-articular calcaneal fractures in the skeletally immature are comparable to those in adults when the treatment protocol is the same
The Impact of Welfare Reform On Infants & Toddlers, Their Families, & Their Communities: The Role of Early Head Start & Head Start
This study is a qualitative inquiry investigating how perspectives of welfare reform implementation may change or evolve from (a) state level policy makers, (b) county or local administrators responsible for implementing the policies, (c) social service workers directly involved with welfare recipients, (d) Head Start/Early Head Start program staff interacting with both the social service workers and the families they serve, and e) families currently or previously on cash assistance
Exploring fathering roles in low-income families: The influence of intergenerational transmission
This is the published version. Copyright Alliance for Children and FamiliesThis study explores the meaning of fathering among men identified as fathers or father figures of 24-month-old children enrolled in Early Head Start research sites. Fathers were asked open-ended questions about their experiences of being fathers and their relationships with their own fathers. These men spoke of how important âbeing thereâ was for them in their relationship with their child as well as how the relationship with their own fathers influenced them as a parent. This study supports the theory of intergenerational parenting and furthers our knowledge and understanding of what some men feel are important aspects of being a good father. A theoretical framework on why men may model their fatherâs behaviors is offered, as are implications for practitioners
Measuring the quality of family-professional partnerships in special education services
This is the published version, also found here: http://cec.metapress.com/content/jr8655lg61k1n440/?p=edbc223bb2fb4291b6b55663014711a2&pi=3One difficulty in monitoring the quality of family-professional partnerships has been
the lack of a psychometrically acceptable and sufficiently general instrument with which to assess
them. The current work describes the development of the Family-Professional Partnership Scale,
which assesses parents' perceptions of the importance of and their satisfaction with family-professional
partnerships. Indicators were constructed from qualitative research on families with children
with and without disabilities, and the scale was refined across two field tests that included families
with children with a wide range of ages and disability types and severity. Both the 18-item overall
scale and the two 9-item subscales demonstrated excellent psychometric properties. The possible uses
of this scale in future research and service delivery are discus
