Disentanglement and decoherence in a pair of qutrits under dephasing noise
We relate disentanglement and decoherence rates in a pair of three-level
atoms subjected to multi-local and collective pure dephasing noise acting in a
preferred basis. The bipartite entanglement decay rate, as bounded from above
by the negativity, is found to be greater than or equal to the
dephasing-decoherence rates characterized by the decay of off-diagonal elements
in the corresponding full density matrix describing the system or the reduced
density matrix describing either qutrit, extending previous results for qubit
pairs subject to such noise.Comment: 9 pages, submitted to J. Mod. Opt. 01/21/07, accepted 08/14/07

We Are Union Builders Too: Oregon Union Tackles Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation
[Excerpt] Most unionists agree that discrimination is a union issue. Unions have civil rights departments and push legislative agendas, but it\u27s the stewards who are on the front lines every day defending workers against discrimination on the job. But what if the steward speaks or acts in ways which exhibit bigoted attitudes? What does this do to the stewards\u27 overall effectiveness? How can the victim of discrimination be fully represented? How does the steward\u27s behavior reflect upon the union

Protecting Workers and Their Families With Paid Family Leave and Caregiving Credits
Calls for equal access to paid job-protected family leave for women, which would enable them to return to the workforce and boost their lifetime earnings, and for Social Security credits for unpaid family caregivers who leave the workforce temporarily
Internet Defamation as Profit Center: The Monetization of Online Harassment
Efforts to decrease the sexist aspects of online fora have been largely ineffective, and in some instances seemingly counterproductive, in the sense that they have provoked even greater amounts of abuse and harassment with a gendered aspect. And so, in the wake of a series of high profile episodes of cyber sexual harassment, and a grotesque abundance of low profile ones, a new business model was launched. Promising to clean up and monitor online information to defuse the visible impact of coordinated harassment campaigns, a number of entities began to market themselves as knights in cyber shining armor, ready to defend otherwise defenseless people whose reputations have been sullied on the Internet Of course these companies charge a fee and place particular emphasis on women who they recognize as potential clients. This article raises three concerns about these businesses. First, these companies have economic incentives to foster conditions online that perpetuate acts of online harassment, as the more harassment there is online, the greater the number of potential clients. These companies are also incentivized to create fora with hostile climates and to stir up trouble themselves. Second, these companies have economic incentives to oppose legal reforms that might enable online defamation and harassment victims to seek recourse from law enforcement agencies or through the courts. And finally, though they cloak themselves in the mantel of protectors of the innocent, their real agenda is to sell their services to wealthy corporations and individuals for far more nefarious purposes: to help bad actors hide negative information about themselves. This practice creates information asymmetries that can harm anyone who detrimentally relies on what they incorrectly assume to be the best available information and can lead to increases in the sorts of financial losses and personal vulnerability that access to unmanipulated Internet search results might otherwise reduce

"We think that’s the future": curriculum reform initiatives in higher education
This research report, considering curriculum reform initiatives in higher education, explores the nature of whole institutional curriculum reform undertaken by universities in the UK, and beyond, in response to the globalised world and global economy of the 21st Century.
The key questions addressed in the report considered:
What self-scrutiny, strategies, planning and processes do universities who have successfully reformed the curriculum undertake?
How do these universities measure and evaluate the impact of whole curriculum reform in relation to learning and teaching and the student experience?
Eighteen universities expressed interest in the research and provided details of their reforms. Each university judged their reforms as successful against their own expectations. An initial in-depth interview took place with ten of these universities and follow-up case study research took place at three universities: Kingston University, London; Curtin University, Perth, Australia and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
The thematic analysis focusses on higher educational leadership, the process and evaluation of curriculum reform initiatives and explores staff and student engagement with curriculum change in higher education. The research concludes that these initiatives can lead to a realignment of the curriculum with a clearly articulated mission for the individual universities taking part in such activities
