Background: Appropriate use of antibiotic in children with urinary tract infection (UTI) is essential so as to curb the spread of drug-resistantorganisms. Objectives: To study the bacteriological profile and antibiotic sensitivity pattern in children with UTI and to determine theprevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producers of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species. Methods: This prospectivestudy was conducted from October 2010 to September 2011. The children between age group of 3 and 14 years who attended PediatricDepartment at a tertiary care hospital were included in the study. Single midstream urine specimen was collected from each patient withsuspected UTI. Result: Out of 184 urine samples with suspected UTI, 122 children had culture-proven UTI. Of 122 cases, 81 (66.39%)cases were seen in females. The most common organism isolated was E. coli (50%) followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (23.77%) andEnterococcus species (8.19%). E. coli, Klebsiella spp., Citrobacter freundii, and Proteus mirabilis responded better to nitrofurantoin (NIT)(76.8%). Ceftriaxone (79.12%), cefotaxime (74.8%), and cefixime (71.7%) showed higher sensitivity as compared to ceftazidime (63.4%)and cefoperazone (CPZ) (59.4%). Among aminoglycosides, amikacin (82.4%) had a better response as compared to gentamicin (64.6%). Outof 61 E. coli and 31 Klebsiella species, 35 (38.04%) were ESBL producers. The sensitivity of these organisms to imipenem was 100% with agood response to meropenem, CPZ-sulbactam, and piperacillin-tazobactam. Conclusion: E. coli and Klebsiella spp. were the most commonisolates and many of them were ESBL producers. NIT seemed to be a reasonable alternative to cephalosporins for the treatment of UTIs inchildren. Carbapenems were found to be effective in ESBLs and non-ESBL producing uropathogens and can be considered as reserve drugs

The Social Life of Memes and Education

Populism typically encompassed disciplines of political sciences and democracies. The inroads made by populism into other domains of knowledge brings to the center the social dimensions of New Populism as integral parts of curricula, pedagogy, and research in all disciplines. Drawing from Dawkins proposition of Meme as a cultural replicator, the paper explores the social processes where memes undergo variations and mutations as they diffuse through different human hosts in social networks. The interconnection of meme, social networks, power structures, and societal outcomes redefines the scope of education and research across domains

A note on a continued fraction of Ramanujan

Ramanujan recorded many beautiful continued fractions in his notebooks. In this paper, we derive several identities involving the Ramanujan continued fraction c(q), including relations between c(q) and c(q(n)). We also obtain explicit evaluations of c(e(-pirootn)) for various positive integers n

Woman power in Corporate India In conversation with Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson & MD, Biocon ltd

In this article, an analysis of data on women directors on the boards of Indian companies is followed by an interview with a first generation woman entrepreneur, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, head of the bio-pharma company, Biocon Ltd. Empirical evidence suggests that though women directors on Indian corporate boards show an increase both in numbers and in percentage terms, they are very much behind men. Women are also less well represented on Indian corporate boards as compared to other countries. Family ties, public sector employment and private sector banks are major sources of directorships for women. There are very few first generation women entrepreneurs in India. Though initial thresholds are higher for women to achieve success, the problems they face afterwards are similar to problems faced by successful men. India has a long way to go before women can catch up with men in the corporate world

Acute pancreatitis complicating dengue hemorrhagic fever

    No full text
Abstract Dengue infection can have spectrum of manifestations, often with an unpredictable clinical progression and outcome. There have been increasing reports of atypical manifestations. Abdominal pain or tenderness and persistent vomiting (warning signs) are present in the majority of cases with severe dengue prior to clinical deterioration. We report a 10-year-old child who presented with fever, persistent vomiting, and abdominal pain. A diagnosis of acute pancreatitis was made. This is a very infrequently reported complication of dengue hemorrhagic fever

Impact of oral conditions on oral health-related quality of life among Indians- a systematic review and Meta-analysis

    No full text
Abstract Objective This review assessed the impact of oral conditions on Oral Health Related Quality of Life among Indians. Methods Databases, including PubMed and Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science, PsycInfo were systematically searched for English Language studies conducted among Indians up to July 2022. Two independent reviewers assessed studies selected for retrieval for methodological quality using standardised quality assessment instruments for analytical cross-sectional studies in JBI SUMARI. Results Fourty one publications were included in this review (N = 23,090). Studies includes both cross sectional study and Randomized Controlled Trials. Based on the JBI critical appraisal tools, the quality of the included studies was low to high. Twenty-six studies were considered for the meta-analysis. Individuals with dental caries [OR: 3.54 (95% CI 2.24- 5.60), ten studies, 4945 participants] and malocclusion [ OR: 5.44 (95% CI 1.61, 18.39), six studies, 3720 participants] had poor OHRQoL compared to individuals without oral conditions. Conclusions Despite the various definitions of the exposures and instruments used to assess Oral Health-Related Quality of Life, our review found that people with dental caries and malocclusion have a significantly higher experience of poor quality of life.
