    Identification of Two Critically Deleted Regions within Chromosome Segment 7q35-q36 in EVI1 Deregulated Myeloid Leukemia Cell Lines

    Chromosomal rearrangements involving the EVI1 proto-oncogene are a recurrent finding in myeloid leukemias and are indicative of a poor prognosis. Rearrangements of the EVI1 locus are often associated with monosomy 7 or cytogenetic detectable deletions of part of 7q. As EVI1 overexpression alone is not sufficient to induce leukemia, loss of a 7q tumour suppressor gene might be a required cooperating event. To test this hypothesis, we performed high-resolution array comparative genomic hybridization analysis of twelve EVI1 overexpressing patients and three EVI1 deregulated cell lines to search for 7q submicroscopic deletions. This analysis lead to the delineation of two critical regions, one of 0.39 Mb on 7q35 containing the CNTNAP2 gene and one of 1.33 Mb on chromosome bands 7q35–q36 comprising nine genes in EVI1 deregulated cell lines.     Building the Policy Ecosystem in Europe for Cultivation and Use of Perennial Biomass Crops

    Perennial biomass crops (PBCs) can potentially contribute to all ten Common Agricultural Policy (2023-27) objectives and up to eleven of the seventeen UN Sustainable Development Goals. This paper discusses interlinked issues that must be considered in the expansion of PBC production: i) available land; ii) yield potential; iii) integration into farming systems; iv) research and development requirements; v) utilisation options; and vi) market systems and the socio-economic environment. The challenge to create development pathways that are acceptable for all actors, relies on measurement, reporting and verification of greenhouse gas emissions reduction in combination with other environmental, economic and social aspects. This paper makes the following policy recommendations to enable greater PBC deployment: 1) incentivise farmers and land managers through specific policy measures, including carbon pricing, to allocate their less productive and less profitable land for uses which deliver demonstrable greenhouse gas reductions; 2) enable greenhouse gas mitigation markets to develop and offer secure contracts for commercial developers of verifiable low carbon bioenergy and bio-products; 3) support innovation in biomass utilisation value chains; and 4) continue long-term, strategic research and development and education for positive environmental, economic and social sustainability impacts. © 2023 ETA-Florence Renewable Energies

    STaTS: A Slicing Tree and Tabu Search based heuristic for the unequal area facility layout problem

    In this paper a slicing tree based tabu search heuristic for the rectangular, continual plane facility layout problem is presented. In addition to the incorporation of facilities with unequal areas we also integrate the possibility to specify various requirements regarding (rectangular) shape and dimensions of each individual facility by using bounding curves. Therefore, it is possible to solve problems containing facilities of fixed and facilities of flexible shapes at the same time. We present a procedure that calculates the layout corresponding to a given slicing tree on the basis of bounding curves. These layouts are slicing structures which are able to contain empty spaces to guarantee that stringent shape restrictions of facilities are kept. Due to these features this approach is better suited for practical use than so far existing ones. The effectiveness of our approach in terms of objective function value is shown by comparing our results to those found in the literature. Even a large problem instance comprised of 62 facilities has been solved.
