    Perceptual symbols of creativity: Coldness elicits referential, warmth elicits relational creativity

    Research in the cognitive and social psychological science has revealed the pervading relation between body and mind. Physical warmth leads people to perceive others as psychological closer to them and to be more generous towards others. More recently, physical warmth has also been implicated in the processing of information, specifically through perceiving relationships (via physical warmth) and the distancing from others (via coldness). In addition, social psychological work has linked social cues (such as mimicry and power cues) to creative performance. The present work integrates these two literatures, by providing an embodied model of creative performance through relational (warm = relational) and referential (cold = distant) processing. The authors predict and find that warmth cues lead to greater creativity when 1) creating drawings, 2) categorizing objects, and 3) coming up with gifts for others. In contrast, cold cues lead to greater creativity, when 1) breaking set in a metaphor recognition task, 2) coming up with new pasta names, and 3) being abstract in coming up with gifts. Effects are found across different populations and age groups. The authors report implications for theory and discuss limitations of the present work.     Maternal Serum and Breast Milk Vitamin D Levels: Findings from the Universiti Sains Malaysia Pregnancy Cohort Study

    Background: Vitamin D deficiency has become a global health issue in pregnant women. This study aimed to assess the adequacy of maternal vitamin D status by measuring maternal serum and breast milk 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and to determine the association between maternal serum and milk 25(OH)D levels. Methods: Data was obtained from the Universiti Sains Malaysia Pregnancy Cohort Study. This study was conducted from April 2010 to December 2012 in the state of Kelantan, Malaysia. Blood samples from pregnant women aged 19 to 40 years were drawn in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, while breast milk samples at delivery, 2, 6 and 12 months postpartum were collected to analyze for 25(OH)D levels. A total of 102 pregnant women were included in the analysis. Results: Vitamin D deficiency [25(OH)D ,50 nmol/L] was detected in 60% and 37% of women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, respectively. There were 6% and 23% of women who reached normal level of vitamin D status in the second trimester and the third trimester, respectively. Multivitamin intakes during pregnancy were significantly associated with higher serum 25(OH)D levels in the second trimester (b = 9.16, p = 0.005) and the third trimester (b = 13.65, p = 0.003). 25(OH)D levels in breast milk during the first year of lactation ranged from 1.01 to 1.26 nmol/L. Higher maternal serum 25(OH)D level in the second trimester of pregnancy was associated with an elevated level of 25(OH)D in breast milk at delivery (b = 0.002, p = 0.026). Conclusions: This study shows that high proportions of Malay pregnant women are at risk of vitamin D deficiency.     Serotonin at the level of the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex modulates distinct aspects of positive emotion in primates.

    Impaired top-down regulation of the amygdala, and its modulation by serotonin (5-HT), is strongly implicated in the dysregulation of negative emotion that characterizes a number of affective disorders. However, the contribution of these mechanisms to the regulation of positive emotion is not well understood. This study investigated the role of 5-HT within the amygdala and the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), on the expression of appetitive Pavlovian conditioned emotional responses and their reversal in a primate, the common marmoset. Its effects were compared to those of the amygdala itself. Having developed conditioned autonomic and behavioural responses to an appetitive cue prior to surgery, marmosets with excitotoxic amygdala lesions failed to display such conditioned autonomic arousal at retention, but still displayed intact cue-directed conditioned behaviours. In contrast, 5,7-DHT infusions into the amygdala, reducing extracellular 5-HT levels, selectively enhanced the expression of appetitive conditioned behaviour at retention. Similar infusions into the OFC, producing marked reductions in post-mortem 5-HT tissue levels, had no overall effect on autonomic or behavioural responses, either at retention or during reversal learning, but caused an uncoupling of these responses, thereby fractionating emotional output. These data demonstrate the critical role of the amygdala in the expression of appetitive autonomic conditioning, and the region-selective contribution of 5-HT in the amygdala and OFC, respectively, to the expression of conditioned behaviour and the overall coordination of the emotional response. They provide insight into the neurochemical mechanisms underlying the regulation of positive emotional responses, advancing our understanding of the neural basis of pathologically dysregulated emotion

    Embodied Cultural Cognition: Situating the Study of Embodied Cognition in Socio-cultural Contexts

    Embodiment research has demonstrated that cognition is grounded in bodily interactions with the environment and that abstract concepts are tied to the body's sensory and motor systems. Building upon this embodiment perspective and advancing our understanding, we discuss the extension of embodied cultural cognition. We propose that some associations between bodily experiences and abstract concepts are not randomly formed; rather, the development of such associations is situated in a socio-cultural context, informed by cultural imperatives, values, and habits. We draw evidence supporting this view of embodied cultural cognition in body-mind linkages manifested in construal of emotions, time perception, person perception, social power, and moral reasoning. To further extend this research avenue that synthesizes the studies of embodied cognition and culture, we also suggest potential future research directions inspired by this view. This embodied cultural cognition account is useful in understanding and organizing accumulating discoveries of cultural variations in embodiments; it also highlights the social situatedness of embodied cognition and is, therefore, highly compatible with theorizing and research in social and cultural psychology. © 2011 The Authors.     Improving Surgical Outcome Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging Techniques in Deep Brain Stimulation

    IntroductionRecent advances in surgical imaging include the use of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in deep brain stimulation (DBS) and provide a detailed view of the white matter tracts and their connections which are not seen with conventional magnetic resonance imaging. Given that the efficacy of DBS depends on the precise and accurate targeting of these circuits, better surgical planning using information obtained from DTI may lead to improved surgical outcome. We aim to review the available literature to evaluate the efficacy of such a strategy.MethodsA search of PubMed was performed to identify all articles using the search terms “(diffusion tractography OR diffusion tensor imaging OR DTI) AND (deep brain stimulation OR DBS).” Studies were included if DTI was used and clinical outcomes were reported.ResultsWe identified 35 studies where the use of DTI in DBS was evaluated. The most studied pathology was movement disorders (17 studies), psychiatric disorders (11 studies), and pain (7 studies). The overall responder rates for tremor reduction was 70.0% (SD = 26.1%) in 69 patients, 36.5% (SD = 19.1%) for obsessive–compulsive disorder in 9 patients, 48.3% (SD = 40.0%) for depression in 40 patients, and 49.7% (SD = 35.1%) for chronic pain in 23 patients.DiscussionThe studies reviewed show that the use of DTI for surgical planning is feasible, provide additional information over conventional targeting methods, and can improve surgical outcome. Patients in whom the DBS electrodes were within the DTI targets experienced better outcomes than those in whom the electrodes were not. Many current studies are limited by their small sample size or retrospective nature. The use of DTI in DBS planning appears underutilized and further studies are warranted given that surgical outcome can be optimized using this non-invasive technique
