Impedance of a sphere oscillating in an elastic medium with and without slip
The dynamic impedance of a sphere oscillating in an elastic medium is
considered. Oestreicher's formula for the impedance of a sphere bonded to the
surrounding medium can be expressed simply in terms of three lumped impedances
associated with the displaced mass and the longitudinal and transverse waves.
If the surface of the sphere slips while the normal velocity remains
continuous, the impedance formula is modified by adjusting the definition of
the transverse impedance to include the interfacial impedance.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
The Spatial Correlation of Bent-Tail Galaxies and Galaxy Clusters
We have completed a deep radio continuum survey covering 86 square degrees of
the Spitzer-South Pole Telescope deep field to test whether bent-tail galaxies
are associated with galaxy clusters. We present a new catalogue of 22 bent-tail
galaxies and a further 24 candidate bent-tail galaxies. Surprisingly, of the 8
bent-tail galaxies with photometric redshifts, only two are associated with
known clusters. While the absence of bent-tail sources in known clusters may be
explained by effects such as sensitivity, the absence of known clusters
associated with most bent-tail galaxies casts doubt upon current models of
bent-tail galaxies.Comment: Accepted by MNRA
Elastic moduli approximation of higher symmetry for the acoustical properties of an anisotropic material
The issue of how to define and determine an optimal acoustical fit to a set
of anisotropic elastic constants is addressed. The optimal moduli are defined
as those which minimize the mean squared difference in the acoustical tensors
between the given moduli and all possible moduli of a chosen higher material
symmetry. The solution is shown to be identical to minimizing a Euclidean
distance function, or equivalently, projecting the tensor of elastic stiffness
onto the appropriate symmetry. This has implications for how to best select
anisotropic constants to acoustically model complex materials.Comment: 20 page
Faxen relations in solids - a generalized approach to particle motion in elasticity and viscoelasticity
A movable inclusion in an elastic material oscillates as a rigid body with
six degrees of freedom. Displacement/rotation and force/moment tensors which
express the motion of the inclusion in terms of the displacement and force at
arbitrary exterior points are introduced. Using reciprocity arguments two
general identities are derived relating these tensors. Applications of the
identities to spherical particles provide several new results, including simple
expressions for the force and moment on the particle due to plane wave

The ATLAS-SPT radio survey of cluster galaxies
Using a high-performance computing cluster to mosaic 4,787 pointings, we have imaged the 100 sq. deg. South Pole Telescope (SPT) deep-field at 2.1 GHz using the Australian Telescope Compact Array to an rms of 80 mJy and a resolution of 8". Our goal is to generate an independent sample of radio-selected galaxy clusters to study how the radio properties compare with cluster properties at other wavelengths, over a wide range of redshifts in order to construct a timeline of their evolution out to z ~ 1:3. A preliminary analysis of the source catalogue suggests there is no spatial correlation between the clusters identified in the SPT-SZ catalogue and our wide-angle tail galaxies
The closest elastic tensor of arbitrary symmetry to an elasticity tensor of lower symmetry
The closest tensors of higher symmetry classes are derived in explicit form
for a given elasticity tensor of arbitrary symmetry. The mathematical problem
is to minimize the elastic length or distance between the given tensor and the
closest elasticity tensor of the specified symmetry. Solutions are presented
for three distance functions, with particular attention to the Riemannian and
log-Euclidean distances. These yield solutions that are invariant under
inversion, i.e., the same whether elastic stiffness or compliance are
considered. The Frobenius distance function, which corresponds to common
notions of Euclidean length, is not invariant although it is simple to apply
using projection operators. A complete description of the Euclidean projection
method is presented. The three metrics are considered at a level of detail far
greater than heretofore, as we develop the general framework to best fit a
given set of moduli onto higher elastic symmetries. The procedures for finding
the closest elasticity tensor are illustrated by application to a set of 21

Radio Observations of the Hubble Deep Field South region: I. Survey Description and Initial Results
This paper is the first of a series describing the results of the Australia
Telescope Hubble Deep Field South (ATHDFS) radio survey. The survey was
conducted at four wavelengths - 20, 11, 6, and 3 cm, over a 4-year period, and
achieves an rms sensitivity of about 10 microJy at each wavelength. We describe
the observations and data reduction processes, and present data on radio
sources close to the centre of the HDF-S. We discuss in detail the properties
of a subset of these sources. The sources include both starburst galaxies and
galaxies powered by an active galactic nucleus, and range in redshift from 0.1
to 2.2. Some of them are characterised by unusually high radio-to-optical

Glucocorticoids associate with cardiometabolic risk factors in black South Africans
Circulating glucocorticoids are associated with metabolic syndrome and related cardiometabolic risk factors in non-Africans. This study investigated these associations in Africans, whose metabolic phenotype reportedly differs from Europeans. Adiposity, blood pressure, glycaemia, insulin resistance, and lipid profile, were measured in 316 African men and 788 African women living in Soweto, Johannesburg. The 2009 harmonized criteria were used to define metabolic syndrome. Serum glucocorticoids were measured using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Cortisol was associated with greater odds presenting with metabolic syndrome (odds ratio (95% CI) =1.50 (1.04, 2.17) and higher systolic (beta coefficient, β (95% CI) =0.04 (0.01, 0.08)) and diastolic (0.05 (0.02, 0.09)) blood pressure, but higher HDL (0.10 (0.02, 0.19)) and lower LDL (−0.14 (−0.24, −0.03)) cholesterol concentrations, in the combined sample of men and women. In contrast, corticosterone was only associated with higher insulin sensitivity (Matsuda index; 0.22 (0.03, 0.41)), but this was not independent of BMI. Sex-specific associations were observed, such that both cortisol and corticosterone were associated with higher fasting glucose (standardized β (95% CI): 0.24 (0.12, 0.36) for cortisol and 0.12 (0.01, 0.23) for corticosterone) and HbA1c (0.13 (0.01, 0.25) for cortisol and 0.12 (0.01, 0.24) for corticosterone) in men only, but lower HbA1c (0.10 (−0.20, −0.01) for cortisol and −0.09 (−0.18, −0.03) for corticosterone) in women only. Our study reports for the first time that associations between circulating glucocorticoid concentrations and key cardiometabolic risk factors exhibit both glucocorticoid- and sex-specificity in Africans
Infant growth and body composition from birth to 24 months: Are infants developing the same?
Background: Given the importance of infancy for establishing growth trajectories, with later-life health consequences, we investigated longitudinal body composition among infants from six economically and ethnically diverse countries.Methods: We recruited mother-infant dyads using the WHO Multicenter Growth Reference Study criteria. We measured fat-free mass (FFM) in 1393 (49% female) infants from birth to 6 months of age (Australia, India, and South Africa; n = 468), 3-24 months of age (Brazil, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka; n = 925), and derived fat mass (FM), fat mass index (FMI), and fat-free mass index (FFMI). Height-for-age (HAZ), weight-for-age (WAZ), and weight-for-length (WHZ) Z-scores were computed. Sex differences were assessed using a t-test, and country differences using a one-way analysis of covariance. We further compared subsamples of children with average (-0.25 \u3e HAZ \u3c +0.25), below-average (≤-0.25) and above-average (≥+0.25) HAZ.Results: HAZ performed well between 0 and 6 months, but less so between 3 and 24 months. The stunting prevalence peaked at 10.3% for boys and 7.8% for girls, at 24 months. By 24 months, girls had greater FMI (10%) than boys. There were significant differences in FFM (both sexes in all countries) and FM (Brazilian boys, Pakistani and South African girls) by 24 months of age between infants with average, above-average, and below-average HAZ.Conclusion: In a multi-country sample representing more ideal maternal conditions, body composition was heterogeneous even among infants who exhibited ideal length. Having a mean HAZ close to the median of the WHO standard for length reduced FFM between-country heterogeneity but not FM, suggesting that other factors may influence adiposity
