Non-LTE treatment of molecules in the photospheres of cool stars
We present a technique to treat systems with very many levels, like
molecules, in non-LTE. This method is based on a superlevel formalism coupled
with rate operator splitting. Superlevels consist of many individual levels
that are assumed to be in LTE relative to each other. The usage of superlevels
reduces the dimensionality of the rate equations dramatically and, thereby,
makes the problem computationally more easily treatable. Our superlevel
formalism retains maximum accuracy by using direct opacity sampling (dOS) when
calculating the radiative transitions and the opacities. We developed this
method in order to treat molecules in cool dwarf model calculations in non-LTE.
Cool dwarfs have low electron densities and a radiation field that is far from
a black body radiation field, both properties may invalidate the conditions for
the common LTE approximation. Therefore, the most important opacity sources,
the molecules, need to be treated in non-LTE. As a case study we applied our
method to carbon monoxide. We find that our method gives accurate results since
the conditions for the superlevel method are very well met for molecules. Due
to very high collisional cross sections with hydrogen, and the high densities
of H_2 the population of CO itself shows no significant deviation from LTE.Comment: AASTeX v50, 35 pages including 12 figures, accepted by Ap
Magnetic Field-Induced Lattice Effects in a Quasi-2D Organic Conductor Close to the Mott Metal-Insulator Transition
We present ultra-high-resolution dilatometric studies in magnetic fields on a
quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor
-(D8-BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)]Br, which is located close to the
Mott metal-insulator (MI) transition. The obtained thermal expansion
coefficient, , reveals two remarkable features: (i) the Mott MI
transition temperature = (13.6 0.6)\,K is insensitive to fields
up to 10\,T, the highest applied field; (ii) for fields along the interlayer
\emph{b}-axis, a magnetic-field-induced (FI) phase transition at =
(9.5 0.5)\,K is observed above a threshold field 1 T,
indicative of a spin reorientation with strong magneto-elastic coupling.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Analysis of stochastic probing methods for estimating the trace of functions of sparse symmetric matrices
We consider the problem of estimating the trace of a matrix function .
In certain situations, in particular if cannot be well approximated by a
low-rank matrix, combining probing methods based on graph colorings with
stochastic trace estimation techniques can yield accurate approximations at
moderate cost. So far, such methods have not been thoroughly analyzed, though,
but were rather used as efficient heuristics by practitioners. In this
manuscript, we perform a detailed analysis of stochastic probing methods and,
in particular, expose conditions under which the expected approximation error
in the stochastic probing method scales more favorably with the dimension of
the matrix than the error in non-stochastic probing. Extending results from [E.
Aune, D. P. Simpson, J. Eidsvik, Parameter estimation in high dimensional
Gaussian distributions, Stat. Comput., 24, pp. 247--263, 2014], we also
characterize situations in which using just one stochastic vector is always --
not only in expectation -- better than the deterministic probing method.
Several numerical experiments illustrate our theory and compare with existing
methods
Analysis of Keck High Resolution Spectra of VB10
We use a preliminary version of our ``NextGen'' grid of cool star model
atmospheres to compute synthetic line profiles which fit high resolution Keck
spectra of the cool M~dwarf VB10 satisfactorily well. We show that the
parameters derived from the Keck data are consistent with the parameters
derived from lower resolution spectra with larger wavelength coverage. We
discuss the treatment of van der Waals broadening in cool, molecular (mostly
) dominated stellar atmospheres. The line profiles are dominated by
van der Waals pressure broadening and are a sensitive indicator for the gravity
and metallicity. Therefore, the high-resolution Keck spectra are useful for
determining the parameters of M dwarfs. There is some ambiguity between the
metallicity and gravity. For VB10, we find from the high-resolution spectra
that and 0 < \left[\case{{\rm M}}{{\rm H}}\right] <
+0.5 for an adopted fixed effective temperature of 2700~K (Schweitzer, 1995),
which is consistent with recent interior calculations (Baraffe etal, 1995).Comment: 8 pages, latex, MNRAS style, figures not included, full text plus

Die Gesellschaft als Labor? Wissenschaftsforschung meets soziologische Theorie
