Imaging Atherosclerosis with Hybrid Positron Emission Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Imaging

    Get PDF
Noninvasive imaging of atherosclerosis could potentially move patient management towards individualized triage, treatment, and followup. The newly introduced combined positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system could emerge as a key player in this context. Both PET and MRI have previously been used for imaging plaque morphology and function: however, the combination of the two methods may offer new synergistic opportunities. Here, we will give a short summary of current relevant clinical applications of PET and MRI in the setting of atherosclerosis. Additionally, our initial experiences with simultaneous PET/MRI for atherosclerosis imaging are presented. Finally, future potential vascular applications exploiting the unique combination of PET and MRI will be discussed

In Vivo Radionuclide Generators for Diagnostics and Therapy

    Get PDF
In vivo radionuclide generators make complex combinations of physical and chemical properties available for medical diagnostics and therapy. Perhaps the best-known in vivo generator is 212Pb/212Bi, which takes advantage of the extended half-life of 212Pb to execute a targeted delivery of the therapeutic short-lived α-emitter 212Bi. Often, as in the case of 81Rb/81Kr, chemical changes resulting from the transmutation of the parent are relied upon for diagnostic value. In other instances such as with extended alpha decay chains, chemical changes may lead to unwanted consequences. This article reviews some common and not-so-common in vivo generators with the purpose of understanding their value in medicine and medical research. This is currently relevant in light of a recent push for alpha emitters in targeted therapies, which often come with extended decay chains

Robust Fundamental Frequency Estimation in Coloured Noise

    Get PDF
Most parametric fundamental frequency estimators make the implicit assumption that any corrupting noise is additive, white Gaus-sian. Under this assumption, the maximum likelihood (ML) and the least squares estimators are the same, and statistically efficient. However, in the coloured noise case, the estimators differ, and the spectral shape of the corrupting noise should be taken into account. To allow for this, we here propose two schemes that refine the noise statistics and parameter estimates in an iterative manner, one of them based on an approximate ML solution and the other one based on removing the periodic signal obtained from a linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) filter. Evaluations on real speech data indicate that the iteration steps improve the estimation accuracy, therefore offering improvement over traditional non-parametric fundamental frequency methods in most of the evaluated scenarios
