    Low-Complexity Hyperspectral Image Compression on a Multi-tiled Architecture

    The increasing amount of data produced in satellites poses a downlink communication problem due to the limited data rate of the downlink. This bottleneck is solved by introducing more and more processing power on-board to compress data to a satisfiable rate. Currently, this processing power is often provided by custom off the shelf hardware which is needed to run the complex image compression standards. The increase in required processing power often increases the energy required to power the hardware. This in turn pushes algorithm developers to develop lower complexity algorithms which are able to compress the data for the least amount of processing per data element. On the other hand hardware developers are pushed to develop flexible hardware which can be used on multiple missions to cut development cost and can be re-used for different missions. This paper introduces an algorithm which has been developed\ud to compress hyperspectral images at low complexity and describes its mapping to a new hardware platform which has been developed to offer flexibility as well as high performance processing power called the Xentium tile processor

    Soft output bit error rate estimation for WCDMA

    This paper introduces a method that computes an estimation of the bit error rate (BER) based on the RAKE receiver soft output only. For this method no knowledge is needed about the channel characteristics nor the precise external conditions. Simulations show that the mean error of the estimation is below 2%, with only a small variance. Implementation issues for a practical use of the method are discussed

    The low-affinity ATP binding site of the Escherichia coli SecA dimer is localized at the subunit interface

    The homodimeric SecA protein is the ATP-dependent force generator in the Escherichia coli precursor protein translocation cascade. SecA contains two essential nucleotide binding sites (NBSs), i.e., NBS1 and NBS2 that bind ATP with high and low affinity, respectively. The photoactivatable bifunctional cross-linking agent 3'-arylazido-8-azidoadenosine 5'-triphosphate (diN3ATP) was used to investigate the spatial arrangement of the nucleotide binding sites of SecA. DiN3ATP is an authentic ATP analogue as it supports SecA-dependent precursor protein translocation and translocation ATPase. UV-induced photo-cross-linking of the diN3ATP-bound SecA results in the formation of stable dimeric species of SecA. D209N SecA, a mutant unable to bind nucleotides at NBS1, was also photo-cross-linked by diN3ATP, whereas no cross-linking occurred with the NBS2 mutant R509K SecA. We concluded that the low-affinity NBS2, which is located in the carboxyl-terminal half of SecA, is the site of cross-linking and that NBS2 binds nucleotides at or near the subunit interface of the SecA dimer.

    Molecular-logic based computation (MLBC) has grown by accumulating many examples of combinational logic gates and a few sequential variants. In spite of many inspirations being available in biology, there are virtually no examples of MLBC in chemistry where sequential and combinational operations are integrated. Here we report a simple alcohol-ketone redox interconversion which switches a macrocycle between a large or small cavity, with erect aromatic walls which create a deep hydrophobic space or with collapsed walls respectively. Small aromatic guests can be captured or released in an all or none manner upon chemical command. During capture, the fluorescence of the alcohol macrocycle is quenched via fluorescent photoinduced electron transfer switching, meaning that its occupancy state is self-indicated. This represents a chemically-driven RS Flip-Flop, one of whose outputs is fed into an INHIBIT gate. Processing of outputs from memory stores is seen in the injection of packaged neurotransmitters into synaptic clefts for onward neural signalling. Overall, capture-release phenomena from discrete supermolecules now have a Boolean basis
