Analytical approach to directed sandpile models on the Apollonian network
We investigate a set of directed sandpile models on the Apollonian network,
which are inspired on the work by Dhar and Ramaswamy (PRL \textbf{63}, 1659
(1989)) for Euclidian lattices. They are characterized by a single parameter
, that restricts the number of neighbors receiving grains from a toppling
node. Due to the geometry of the network, two and three point correlation
functions are amenable to exact treatment, leading to analytical results for
the avalanche distributions in the limit of an infinite system, for .
The exact recurrence expressions for the correlation functions are numerically
iterated to obtain results for finite size systems, when larger values of
are considered. Finally, a detailed description of the local flux properties is

Transverse instability of dunes
The simplest type of dune is the transverse one, which propagates with
invariant profile orthogonally to a fixed wind direction. Here we show
numerically and with a linear stability analysis that transverse dunes are
unstable with respect to along-axis perturbations in their profile and decay on
the bedrock into barchan dunes. Any forcing modulation amplifies exponentially
with growth rate determined by the dune turnover time. We estimate the distance
covered by a transverse dune before fully decaying into barchans and identify

Numerical modeling of the wind flow over a transverse dune
Transverse dunes, which form under unidirectional winds and have fixed
profile in the direction perpendicular to the wind, occur on all celestial
objects of our solar system where dunes have been detected. Here we perform a
numerical study of the average turbulent wind flow over a transverse dune by
means of computational fluid dynamics simulations. We find that the length of
the zone of recirculating flow at the dune lee --- the {\em{separation bubble}}
--- displays a surprisingly strong dependence on the wind shear velocity,
: it is nearly independent of for shear velocities within
the range between ms and $0.8\,$ms but increases linearly with
for larger shear velocities. Our calculations show that transport in
the direction opposite to dune migration within the separation bubble can be
sustained if is larger than approximately ms, whereas a
larger value of $u_{\ast}$ (about $0.49\,$ms) is required to initiate this

Spreading gossip in social networks
We study a simple model of information propagation in social networks, where
two quantities are introduced: the spread factor, which measures the average
maximal fraction of neighbors of a given node that interchange information
among each other, and the spreading time needed for the information to reach
such fraction of nodes. When the information refers to a particular node at
which both quantities are measured, the model can be taken as a model for
gossip propagation. In this context, we apply the model to real empirical
networks of social acquaintances and compare the underlying spreading dynamics
with different types of scale-free and small-world networks. We find that the
number of friendship connections strongly influences the probability of being
gossiped. Finally, we discuss how the spread factor is able to be applied to

Optimal box-covering algorithm for fractal dimension of complex networks
The self-similarity of complex networks is typically investigated through
computational algorithms the primary task of which is to cover the structure
with a minimal number of boxes. Here we introduce a box-covering algorithm that
not only outperforms previous ones, but also finds optimal solutions. For the
two benchmark cases tested, namely, the E. Coli and the WWW networks, our
results show that the improvement can be rather substantial, reaching up to 15%

Computational tool for the analysis and simulation of cold room performance in perishable products industry
Perishable products such as meat, fruit and dairy products are some of the major food products preferred by consumers due to their nutritional and organoleptic characteristics. The conservation of their properties through time is usually ensured by storing them in rooms with controlled air temperature and humidity. The refrigeration systems that accomplish these environmental conditions are the main responsible by the electrical energy consumption in food sector industries. With the aim to promote an improvement of its energy performance, a computational tool for the analysis and simulation of cold rooms performance was developed. It allows the analysis of the behaviour of relevant parameters, such as: raw material quantity, cold rooms volume, refrigeration systems power, among others. The preliminary results of the practical application of this tool show its usefulness on the decision making for energy efficiency measures to reduce the specific energy consumption in perishable products industry.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Aeolian transport layer
We investigate the airborne transport of particles on a granular surface by
the saltation mechanism through numerical simulation of particle motion coupled
with turbulent flow. We determine the saturated flux and show that its
behavior is consistent with a classical empirical relation obtained from wind
tunnel measurements. Our results also allow to propose a new relation valid for
small fluxes, namely, , where and
are the shear and threshold velocities of the wind, respectively, and
the scaling exponent is . We obtain an expression for the
velocity profile of the wind distorted by the particle motion and present a
dynamical scaling relation. We also find a novel expression for the dependence
