To vote or to abstain? An experimental study or first past the poste and PR elections

We examine through an experimental design how rational and non-rational considerations affect the decision to vote or to abstain in First Past the Post and PR elections. We show that in both types of elections, but particularly so under PR, a majority of subjects do not make the "right" decision, that is, they do not choose the option that is the most beneficial to them, given. We also demonstrate that a social norm such as sense of civic duty plays a bigger role, even in the lab, and particularly so in PR elections. We suggest that civic duty has a greater impact under PR because this electoral system has a more complicated formula, making it more difficult for voters to realize that their vote is unlikely to substantially affect the outcome of the election.Experiments, Voting, First Past the Post, Proportional Representation, Civic Duty

Trois capitaines pour un empereur ! Histoires de bizango

Depuis 2007, d’innombrables statues dites bizango, du nom d’une société secrète en Haïti, ont surgi sur la scène internationale du marché de l’art et des musées sans que leur généalogie ou l’existence d’une culture matérielle de ces sociétés aient été questionnées. À partir de l’acquisition d’une de ces statues par le musée du quai Branly, cet article se propose de retracer l’histoire récente de cette statuaire, les conditions de sa commercialisation et les raisons de son succès. Les bizango ont-ils été à un moment de leur histoire des artefacts utilisés dans des rituels de sociétés secrètes ou relèvent-ils exclusivement d’une démarche artistique et commerciale ? Peut-on réellement tracer une frontière entre objet rituel et objet esthétique ? Que nous disent-ils des tentatives de patrimonialisation et d’institutionnalisation du vodou ? Ne renvoient-ils pas à un imaginaire occidental inépuisable et infatigable quand il s’agit de diaboliser Haïti ?Since 2007, statues called “bizango”, after a Haitian secret society, have suddenly appeared on the world art market and in museums. But nothing is known of their genealogy nor of the secret societies’ material culture. The musée du quai Branly has recently acquired one of these sculptures; this article uses this opportunity to trace the history of the “bizango” statuary, the conditions of its marketing, and the reasons for its success. Have these artefacts been used, at one point in their history, in the rituals of secret societies, or have they always been part of an exclusively artistic and commercial approach? Is it possible to draw a clear line between a ritual object and an aesthetic object? What do the bizango tell us about the various attempts at the patrimonialization and institutionalization of voodoo? Should we not see in them as yet another expression of the inexhaustible and tireless imagination of the Western world when it comes to demonizing Haïti
