Effect of disorder on the magnetic and transport properties of La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3}

Full text link
We study a simplified model of the electronic structure of compounds of the type of La1x_{1-x}Srx_xMnO3_3. The model represents each Mn4+^{4+} ion by a spin S=1/2, on which an electron can be added to produce Mn3+^{3+}. We include two strong intratomic interactions in the Hamiltonian: exchange (JJ% ) and Coulomb (UU). Finally, to represent the effect of Sr substitution by La in a simple way, we include a distribution of diagonal energies at the Mn sites. Then we use Green function techniques to calculate a mobility edge and the average density of states. We find that according to the amount of disorder and to the concentration of electrons in the system, the Fermi level can cross the mobility edge to produce a metal to insulator transition as the magnetization decreases (increase of temperature). If the disorder is large, the system remains insulating for all concentrations. Concentrations near zero or one favor the insulating state while intermediate values of concentration favor the metallic state.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures available upon request, accepted for publication in Solid State Communication

Search of low-dimensional magnetics on the basis of structural data: spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic zigzag chain compounds In2VO5, beta-Sr(VOAsO4)2,(NH4,K)2VOF4 and alpha-ZnV3O8

Full text link
A new technique for searching low-dimensional compounds on the basis of structural data is presented. The sign and strength of all magnetic couplings at distances up to 12 A in five predicted new antiferromagnetic zigzag spin-1/2 chain compounds In2VO5, beta-Sr(VOAsO4)2, (NH4)2VOF4, K2VOF4 and alpha-ZnV3O8 were calculated. It was stated that in the compound In2VO5 zigzag spin chains are frustrated, since the ratio (J2/J1) of competing antiferromagnetic (AF) nearest- (J1) and AF next-to-nearest-neighbour (J2) couplings is equal to 1.68 that exceeds the Majumdar-Ghosh point by 1/2. In other compounds the zigzag spin chains are AF magnetically ordered single chains as value of ratios J2/J1 is close to zero. The interchain couplings were analyzed in detail.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure, 1 table, minor change

Estuary environmental flows assessment methodology : final specification report

Full text link
This report provides a consistent and systematic approach to the determination of environmental water requirements for estuaries in Victoria.Victoria’s limited water resources are subject to competing demands. These demands, including town water supplies and irrigation requirements, often deplete the flow entering estuaries and put their environmental values at risk. The Estuary Environmental Flows Assessment Methodology (EEFAM) is a standard methodology which can be applied in a consistent manner across all Victorian estuaries, according to their priority. It is not anticipated that this method would be used for the Gippsland Lakes or Port Phillip or Western Port Bay.<br /

WESTT (Workload, Error, Situational Awareness, Time and Teamwork): An analytical prototyping system for command and control

Get PDF
Modern developments in the use of information technology within command and control allow unprecedented scope for flexibility in the way teams deal with tasks. These developments, together with the increased recognition of the importance of knowledge management within teams present difficulties for the analyst in terms of evaluating the impacts of changes to task composition or team membership. In this paper an approach to this problem is presented that represents team behaviour in terms of three linked networks (representing task, social network structure and knowledge) within the integrative WESTT software tool. In addition, by automating analyses of workload and error based on the same data that generate the networks, WESTT allows the user to engage in the process of rapid and iterative “analytical prototyping”. For purposes of illustration an example of the use of this technique with regard to a simple tactical vignette is presented

Chemoselective oxidation of aryl organoboron systems enabled by boronic acid-selective phase transfer

We report the direct chemoselective Brown-type oxidation of aryl organoboron systems containing two oxidizable boron groups. Basic biphasic reaction conditions enable selective formation and phase transfer of a boronic acid trihydroxyboronate in the presence of boronic acid pinacol (BPin) esters, while avoiding speciation equilibria. Spectroscopic investigations validate a base-promoted phase-selective discrimination of organoboron species. This phenomenon is general across a broad range of organoboron compounds and can also be used to invert conventional protecting group strategies, enabling chemoselective oxidation of BMIDA species over normally more reactive BPin substrates. We also demonstrate the selective oxidation of diboronic acid systems with chemoselectivity predictable a priori. The utility of this method is exemplified through the development of a chemoselective oxidative nucleophile coupling

Simultaneous, in situ measurements of OH, HO_2, O_3, and H_2O: A test of modeled stratospheric HO_x chemistry

Get PDF
Simultaneous, in situ measurements of OH, HO_2, H_2O, and O_3 from 37–23 km are reported. The partitioning between OH and HO_2 and the total HO_x concentration are compared with expected steady-state values. The ratio of HO_2 to OH varies from less than 2 at 36 km to more than 3 at 25 km; in the lower stratosphere this ratio is nearly a factor of two less than predicted. The data are used to calculate HO_x production and loss rates. The measured HOx mixing ratio is consistent with production dominated by the reaction of O(1D) with H_2O, and loss controlled by NO_y below 28 km and HO_x above 30 km. The steady-state concentration of H_2O_2 is inferred from the measured HO_2 concentration and calculated photolysis rate. The maximum H_2O_2 mixing ratio (at 33 km) is predicted to be less than 0.2 ppb

The psychiatric decision unit as an emerging model in mental health crisis care: a national survey in England

Get PDF
Psychiatric decision units have been developed in many countries internationally to address the pressure on inpatient services and dissatisfactory, long waits people in mental health crisis can experience in emergency departments. Research into these units lags behind their development, as they are implemented by healthcare providers to address these problems. This is the first-ever national survey to identify their prevalence, structure, activities, and contextual setting within health services, in order to provide a robust basis for future research. The response rate was high (94%), and six PDUs in England were identified. The results indicated that PDUs open 24/7, accept only voluntary patients, provide recliner chairs for sleeping rather than beds, and limit stays to 12–72 hours. PDUs are predominantly staffed by senior, qualified mental health nurses and healthcare assistants, with psychiatry input. Staff:patient ratios are high (1:2.1 during the day shift). Differences in PDU structure and activities (including referral pathway, length of stay, and staff:patient ratios) were identified, suggesting the optimal configuration for PDUs has not yet been established. Further research into the efficacy of this innovation is needed; PDUs potentially have a role in an integrated crisis care pathway which provides a variety of care options to service users
