    The role of data & program code archives in the future of economic research

    This essay examines the role of data and program-code archives in making economic research "replicable." Replication of published results is recognized as an essential part of the scientific method. Yet, historically, both the "demand for" and "supply of" replicable results in economics has been minimal. "Respect for the scientific method" is not sufficient to motivate either economists or editors of professional journals to ensure the replicability of published results. We enumerate the costs and benefits of mandatory data and code archives, and argue that the benefits far exceed the costs. Progress has been made since the gloomy assessment of Dewald, Thursby and Anderson some twenty years ago in the American Economic Review, but much remains to be done before empirical economics ceases to be a "dismal science" when judged by the replicability of its published results.Econometrics ; Research

    The role and use of simulation as a design tool in developing integrated systems where design criteria is largely unavailable is well known. This paper addresses additional simulation needs for the development of Integrated Flight/Propulsion Control Systems (IFPCS) which will improve the probability of properly interpreting simulation results. These needs are based on recent experience with power approach flying qualities evaluations of an advanced fighter configuration which incorporated Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) technologies and earlier experiences with power approach flying qualities evaluations on the AFTI/F-16 program. The use of motion base platforms with axial and normal degrees of freedom will help in evaluating pilot coupling and workload in the presence of high frequency low amplitude axial accelerations produced by high bandwidth airspeed controllers in a gusty environment

    Terahertz Hall Measurements On Optimally Doped Single Crystal Bi-2212

    The infrared Hall angle in optimally doped single crystal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x\rm Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+x} was measured from 3.05 to 21.75 meV as a continuous function of temperature from 25 to 300\,K. In the normal state, the temperature dependence of the real part of the cotangent of the infrared Hall angle obeys the same power law as dc measurements. The measured Hall frequency ωH\rm \omega_H is significantly larger than the expected value based upon ARPES data analyzed in terms of the relaxation time approximation. This discrepancy as well as the temperature dependence of Re(cotθH)\rm Re(\cot{\theta_H}) and ωH\omega_H is well described by a Fermi liquid theory in which current vertex corrections produced by electron-magnon scattering are included.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

    A functional central limit theorem for a Markov-modulated infinite-server queue

    The production of molecules in a chemical reaction network is modelled as a Poisson process with a Markov-modulated arrival rate and an exponential decay rate. We analyze the distributional properties of MM, the number of molecules, under specific time-scaling; the background process is sped up by NαN^{\alpha}, the arrival rates are scaled by NN, for NN large. A functional central limit theorem is derived for MM, which after centering and scaling, converges to an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. A dichotomy depending on α\alpha is observed. For α1\alpha\leq1 the parameters of the limiting process contain the deviation matrix associated with the background process.Comment: 4 figure

    Certifying non-existence of undesired locally stable equilibria in formation shape control problems

    A fundamental control problem for autonomous vehicle formations is formation shape control, in which the agents must maintain a prescribed formation shape using only information measured or communicated from neighboring agents. While a large and growing literature has recently emerged on distance-based formation shape control, global stability properties remain a significant open problem. Even in four-agent formations, the basic question of whether or not there can exist locally stable incorrect equilibrium shapes remains open.
