Flight tests of IFR landing approach systems for helicopters
Joint NASA/FAA helicopter flight tests were conducted to investigate airborne radar approaches (ARA) and microwave landing system (MLS) approaches. Flight-test results were utilized to prove NASA with a data base to be used as a performance measure for advanced guidance and navigation concepts, and to provide FAA with data for establishment of TERPS criteria. The first flight-test investigation consisted of helicopter IFR approaches to offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, using weather/mapping radar, operational pilots, and a Bell 212 helicopter. The second flight-test investigation consisted of IFR MLS approaches at Crows Landing (near Ames Research Center), with a Bell UH-1H helicopter, using NASA, FAA, and operational industry pilots. Quasiharmonic elastic constants corrected for deviatoric thermal stresses
The quasiharmonic approximation (QHA), in its simplest form also called the
statically constrained (SC) QHA, has been shown to be a straightforward method
to compute thermoelastic properties of crystals. Recently we showed that for
non-cubic solids SC-QHA calculations develop deviatoric thermal stresses at
high temperatures. Relaxation of these stresses leads to a series of
corrections to the free energy that may be taken to any desired order, up to
self-consistency. Here we show how to correct the elastic constants obtained
using the SC-QHA. We exemplify the procedure by correcting to first order the
elastic constants of MgSiO-perovskite and MgSiO-post-perovskite, the
major phases of the Earth's lower mantle. We show that this first order
correction is quite satisfactory for obtaining the aggregated elastic averages
of these minerals and their velocities in the lower mantle. This type of
correction is also shown to be applicable to experimental measurements of
elastic constants in situations where deviatoric stresses can develop, such as

Dinosaur tracks from the Kilmaluag Formation (Bathonian, Middle Jurassic) of Score Bay, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK
Tracks of a juvenile theropod dinosaur with footprint lengths of between 2 and 9 cm as well as adults of the same ichnospecies with footprints of about 15–25 cm in length were found in the Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) Kilmaluag Formation of Score Bay, northwestern Trotternish Peninsula, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK. Two footprint sizes occur together on the same bedding plane in the central portion of Score Bay, both in situ and on loose blocks. Another horizon containing footprints above this was also identified. The footprints from the lowest horizon were produced in a desiccated silty mud that was covered with sand. A close association of both adults and juveniles with similar travel direction indicated by the footprints may suggest post-hatching care in theropod dinosaurs. Other footprints, produced on a rippled sandy substrate, have been found on the slightly higher bedding plane at this locality. Loose blocks found 130 m to the northeast in the central part of Score Bay have not been correlated with any in situ sediments, but were preserved in a similar manner to those from the higher bedding plane. These tracks represent the youngest dinosaur remains yet found in Scotland
Quasi Harmonic Lattice Dynamics and Molecular Dynamics calculations for the Lennard-Jones solids
We present Molecular Dynamics (MD), Quasi Harmonic Lattice Dynamics (QHLD)
and Energy Minimization (EM) calculations for the crystal structure of Ne, Ar,
Kr and Xe as a function of pressure and temperature. New Lennard-Jones (LJ)
parameters are obtained for Ne, Kr and Xe to reproduce the experimental
pressure dependence of the density. We employ a simple method which combines
results of QHLD and MD calculations to achieve densities in good agreement with
experiment from 0 K to melting. Melting is discussed in connection with
intrinsic instability of the solid as given by the QHLD approximation. (See

Tachyon Condensation and Black Strings
We show that under certain conditions, closed string tachyon condensation
produces a topology changing transition from black strings to Kaluza-Klein
"bubbles of nothing." This can occur when the curvature at the horizon is much
smaller than the string scale, so the black string is far from the
correspondence point when it would make a transition to an excited fundamental
string. This provides a dramatic new endpoint to Hawking evaporation. A similar
transition occurs for black p-branes, and can be viewed as a nonextremal
version of a geometric transition. Applications to AdS black holes and the AdS

Magnetic-field-induced superconductivity in layered organic molecular crystals with localized magnetic moments
The synthetic organic compound lambda-(BETS)2FeCl4 undergoes successive
transitions from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a metal and then to a
superconductor as a magnetic field is increased. We use a Hubbard-Kondo model
to clarify the role of the Fe(3+) magnetic ions in these phase transitions. In
the high-field regime, the magnetic field acting on the electron spins is
compensated by the exchange field He due to the magnetic ions. This suggests
that the field-induced superconducting state is the same as the zero-field
superconducting state which occurs under pressure or when the Fe(3+) ions are
replaced by non-magnetic Ga(3+) ions. We show how He can be extracted from the
observed splitting of the Shubnikov-de Haas frequencies. Furthermore, we use
this method of extracting He to predict the field range for field-induced
superconductivity in other materials.Comment: 5 page
