Spin susceptibility of underdoped cuprates: the case of Ortho-II YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.5}
Recent inelastic neutron scattering measurements found that the spin
susceptibility of detwinned and highly ordered ortho-II YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.5}
exhibits, in both the normal and superconducting states, one-dimensional
incommensurate modulations at low energies which were interpreted as a
signature of dynamic stripes. We propose an alternative model based on
quasiparticle transitions between the arcs of a truncated Fermi surface. Such
transitions are resonantly enhanced by scattering to the triplet spin
resonance. We show that the anisotropy in the experimental spin response is
consistent with this model if the gap at the saddle points is anisotropic.Comment: 5 fives, 3 postscript figure
Impurity-induced antiferromagnetic order in Pauli-limited nodal superconductors: application to heavy fermion CeCoIn5
We investigate the properties of the coexistence phase of itinerant
antiferromagnetism and nodal -wave superconductivity (Q-phase) discovered in
heavy fermion CeCoIn5 under applied magnetic field. We solve the minimal model
that includes -wave superconductivity and underlying magnetic correlations
in real space to elucidate the structure of the -phase in the presence of an
externally applied magnetic field. We further focus on the role of magnetic
impurities, and show that they nucleate the Q-phase at lower magnetic fields.
Our most crucial finding is that, even at zero applied field, dilute magnetic
impurities cooperate via RKKY-like exchange interactions to generate a
long-range ordered coexistence state identical to the Q-phase. This result is
in agreement with recent neutron scattering measurements [S. Raymond et al., J.

Pinning of stripes by local structural distortions in cuprate high-Tc superconductors
We study the spin-density wave (stripe) instability in lattices with mixed
low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO) and low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) crystal
symmetry. Within an explicit mean-field model it is shown how local LTT regions
act as pinning centers for static stripe formation. We calculate the
modulations in the local density of states near these local stripe regions and
find that mainly the coherence peaks and the van Hove singularity (VHS) are
spatially modulated. Lastly, we use the real-space approach to simulate recent
tunneling data in the overdoped regime where the VHS has been detected by
utilizing local normal state regions.Comment: Conference proceedings for Stripes1
Coupled Magnetic Excitations in Single Crystal PrBa2Cu3O6.2
The dispersion of the low-energy magnetic excitations of the Pr sublattice in
PrBa2Cu3O6.2 is determined by inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a
single crystal. The dispersion, which shows the effect of interactions with the
Cu spin-waves, is well described by a model of the coupled Cu-Pr magnetic
system. This enables values for the principal exchange constants to be
determined, which suggest that both Pr-Pr and Cu-Pr interactions are important
in producing the anomalously high ordering temperature of the Pr sublattice.
Measurements of the Cu optic spin wave mode show that the inter-layer Cu-Cu
exchange is significantly lower than in YBa2Cu3O6.2.Comment: To be published Phys. Rev. Let
Interdependence of magnetism and superconductivity in the borocarbide TmNi2B2C
We have discovered a new antiferromagnetic phase in TmNi2B2C by neutron
diffraction. The ordering vector is Q_A = (0.48,0,0) and the phase appears
above a critical in-plane magnetic field of 0.9 T. The field was applied in
order to test the assumption that the zero-field magnetic structure at Q_F =
(0.094,0.094,0) would change into a c-axis ferromagnet if superconductivity
were destroyed. We present theoretical calculations which show that two effects
are important: A suppression of the ferromagnetic component of the RKKY
exchange interaction in the superconducting phase, and a reduction of the
superconducting condensation energy due to the periodic modulation of the
moments at the wave vector Q_A
Lattice vibrations and structural instability in Cesium near the cubic to tetragonal transition
Under pressure cesium undergoes a transition from a high-pressure fcc phase
(Cs-II) to a collapsed fcc phase (Cs-III) near 4.2GPa. At 4.4GPa there follows
a transition to the tetragonal Cs-IV phase. In order to investigate the lattice
vibrations in the fcc phase and seek a possible dynamical instability of the
lattice, the phonon spectra of fcc-Cs at volumes near the III-IV transition are
calculated using Savrasov's density functional linear-response LMTO method.
Compared with quasiharmonic model calculations including non-central
interatomic forces up to second neighbours, at the volume (
is the experimental volume of bcc-Cs with =6.048{\AA}), the
linear-response calculations show soft intermediate wavelength
phonons. Similar softening is also observed for
short wavelength and phonons and intermediate
wavelength phonons. The Born-von K\'{a}rm\'{a}n analysis of
dispersion curves indicates that the interplanar force constants exhibit
oscillating behaviours against plane spacing and the large softening of
intermediate wavelength phonons results from a
negative (110)-interplanar force-constant . The frequencies of the
phonons with around 1/3 become imaginary
and the fcc structure becomes dynamically unstable for volumes below .
It is suggested that superstructures corresponding to the
soft mode should be present as a precursor of tetragonal Cs-IV structure.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Detecting and Characterizing Small Dense Bipartite-like Subgraphs by the Bipartiteness Ratio Measure
We study the problem of finding and characterizing subgraphs with small
\textit{bipartiteness ratio}. We give a bicriteria approximation algorithm
\verb|SwpDB| such that if there exists a subset of volume at most and
bipartiteness ratio , then for any , it finds a set
of volume at most and bipartiteness ratio at most
. By combining a truncation operation, we give a local
algorithm \verb|LocDB|, which has asymptotically the same approximation
guarantee as the algorithm \verb|SwpDB| on both the volume and bipartiteness
ratio of the output set, and runs in time
, independent of the size of the
graph. Finally, we give a spectral characterization of the small dense
bipartite-like subgraphs by using the th \textit{largest} eigenvalue of the
Laplacian of the graph.Comment: 17 pages; ISAAC 201
Experimental investigation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in low-Z targets
In the CERN NA63 collaboration we have addressed the question of the
potential inadequacy of the commonly used Migdal formulation of the
Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect by measuring the photon emission by 20
and 178 GeV electrons in the range 100 MeV - 4 GeV, in targets of
LowDensityPolyEthylene (LDPE), C, Al, Ti, Fe, Cu, Mo and, as a reference
target, Ta. For each target and energy, a comparison between simulated values
based on the LPM suppression of incoherent bremsstrahlung is shown, taking
multi-photon effects into account. For these targets and energies, we find that
Migdal's theoretical formulation is adequate to a precision of better than
about 5%, irrespective of the target substance.Comment: 8 pages, 13 figure
