Alexithymia and its association with burnout, depression and family support among Greek nursing staff

Abstract

Background

Few studies have examined the relation between alexithymia (i.e. the inability to recognize and verbalize emotions) and professional burnout. Considering the absence of relevant studies in the Greek scientific literature, the aim of this work was to examine the associations of alexithymia with the three facets of professional burnout, the perception of family support and depression in nursing personnel.

Methods

The study was performed in one of the largest hospitals in Greece and included 95 nurses. Assessments of alexithymia, burnout, depression and family support were made by means of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory and the Julkunen Family Support Scale, respectively. Student's t-test, Pearson's correlation and stepwise linear regression were used for the evaluation of data.

Results

Alexithymia was correlated positively with depression, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and negatively with sense of family support and personal achievement. Additionally, family support was correlated positively with personal achievement and negatively with depression.

Conclusion

In the scientific literature there is a debate as to whether alexithymia is a stable personality characteristic or if it is dependent on symptoms of mental disorders. We tried to interpret the associations of alexithymia with professional burnout, depressive symptoms and family support. From this study it appears very likely that alexithymia is directly associated with depression and personal achievement, but also indirectly with the sense of family support.</p
Aggressive treatment of metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the rectum to the liver: a case report and a brief review of the literature
BACKGROUND: Rectal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare tumor. The incidence of this malignancy has been reported to be 0.25 to 1 per 1000 colorectal carcinomas. From a review of the English literature 55 cases of SCC of the rectum have been published. In this study we report a rectal metastatic SCC to the liver, discussing the efficacy of aggressive adjuvant and neo-adjuvant therapies on survival and prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old female patient with a pure SCC of the rectum diagnosed endoscopically is presented. The patient underwent initially neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy and then abdominoperineal resection with concomitant bilateral oophorectomy and hysterectomy, followed by adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy. Five months after the initial operation liver metastasis was demonstrated and a liver resection was carried out, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. Eighteen months after the initial operation the patient is alive. CONCLUSION: Although prognosis of rectal SCC is worse than that of adenocarcinoma, an aggressive therapeutic approach with surgery as the primary treatment, followed by combined neo- and adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy, may be necessary in order to improve survival and prognosis

Feta cheese proteins: Manifesting the identity of Greece׳s National Treasure
Over the last years, there has been tremendous debate regarding the identity of feta cheese and under which terms such food with historical ties to ancient Greece can be discriminated among others, based on its unique traits and characteristics. This analysis sets the foundation towards a much anticipated control procedure, by deciphering for the first time the core elements of this food; its proteins. In this initial report, we amassed representative feta cheese samples/types from parts of Greece entitled to produce this “protected designation of origin” (p.d.o) cheese type and analyzed in full their protein content by employing exhaustive deep-proteome analyses. Several groups of proteins were identified, implicated in diverse functions as well as proteins under multiple abundances, while the final feta cheese protein list was set to include solely core-proteins identified in every analyzed sample. Through this data article we report, for the first time, the complete protein content of feta cheese, consisting of 489 proteins, thus setting the foundation towards developing a method for identification of the original Greek product
The Pediatric Ependymoma Protein Database (PEPD)
Proteomics, through application of modern high-end mass spectrometric (MS) approaches, offers the advantage of in-depth analysis of cancer tissues regarding their protein composition. Pediatric brain tumor malignancies are scarcely approached by modern holistic technologies (e.g. genomics, proteomics) due to rarity of samples and most importantly difficulty in their collection. Ependymoma, is the third most common tumor in children and is thought to arise from ependymal cells in the wall of the cerebral ventricles or the spinal canal. Due to the heterogeneity of the disease its biological characteristics remain largely unknown and prognostic factors are basically based on clinical and histological criteria. Through application of a modified nanoLC-MS/MS analysis experimental approach we achieved, for the first time, the in-depth examination of the pediatric ependymoma tissue proteome. In the present article we report on the construction of a high-confidence database; the Pediatric Ependymoma Protein Database (PEPD), including 4,157 protein groups originating from the identification and analysis of more than 15,000 peptides. The PEPD offers a first step towards targeted protein validation of the protein content of this specific devastating disease affecting the young population. Application of proteomics for diagnosis of fetal aneuploidies and pregnancy complications
Proteomic technologies represent new strategies towards high-throughput,
simultaneous analysis of thousands of biological molecules leading to
the discovery of biomarkers for early diagnosis, prognosis and
prediction of pregnancy outcome. Proteomics have additional relevance in
understanding pathophysiology and the development of molecularly
targeted therapeutics. Comparison of normal human amniotic fluid
proteome with that coming from pregnancies carrying fetuses with
chromosomal abnormalities facilitated the detection of panels of
potential biomarkers for prenatal detection of fetal aneuploidies.
Candidate biomarkers for the early prediction of preeclampsis are also
available, while four biomarkers (defensins-2 and -1, calgranulin-C, and
calgranulin-A), which were called the “MR score”, can quickly and
accurately detect potentially dangerous infections and predict premature
birth. Researchers remain hopeful that proteomic studies will allow for
the identification of either one protein marker or of a panel of markers
for prenatal detection of fetal aneuploidies and pregnancy complications
that could be usefully employed for diagnostic purposes or improvement
of the current screening methods. For maximum predictive power however,
biomarkers should be selected for further comparative analysis of
expression and structural modifications in large numbers of samples from
chromosomally normal and abnormal pregnancies obtained from different
populations. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Profile of Membrane Cargo Trafficking Proteins and Transporters Expressed under N Source Derepressing Conditions in Aspergillus nidulans
Solute and ion transporters are proteins essential for cell nutrition, detoxification, signaling, homeostasis and drug resistance. Being polytopic transmembrane proteins, they are co-translationally inserted and folded into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of eukaryotic cells and subsequently sorted to their final membrane destination via vesicular secretion. During their trafficking and in response to physiological/stress signals or prolonged activity, transporters undergo multiple quality control processes and regulated turnover. Consequently, transporters interact dynamically and transiently with multiple proteins. To further dissect the trafficking and turnover mechanisms underlying transporter subcellular biology, we herein describe a novel mass spectrometry-based proteomic protocol adapted to conditions allowing for maximal identification of proteins related to N source uptake in A. nidulans. Our analysis led to identification of 5690 proteins, which to our knowledge constitutes the largest protein dataset identified by omics-based approaches in Aspergilli. Importantly, we detected possibly all major proteins involved in basic cellular functions, giving particular emphasis to factors essential for membrane cargo trafficking and turnover. Our protocol is easily reproducible and highly efficient for unearthing the full A. nidulans proteome. The protein list delivered herein will form the basis for downstream systematic approaches and identification of protein–protein interactions in living fungal cells
