Extracting the Energy-Dependent Neutrino-Nucleon Cross Section Above 10 TeV Using IceCube Showers

Neutrinos are key to probing the deep structure of matter and the high-energy Universe. Yet, until recently, their interactions had only been measured at laboratory energies up to about 350 GeV. An opportunity to measure their interactions at higher energies opened up with the detection of high-energy neutrinos in IceCube, partially of astrophysical origin. Scattering off matter inside the Earth affects the distribution of their arrival directions --- from this, we extract the neutrino-nucleon cross section at energies from 18 TeV to 2 PeV, in four energy bins, in spite of uncertainties in the neutrino flux. Using six years of public IceCube High-Energy Starting Events, we explicitly show for the first time that the energy dependence of the cross section above 18 TeV agrees with the predicted softer-than-linear dependence, and reaffirm the absence of new physics that would make the cross section rise sharply, up to a center-of-mass energy of ~1 TeV.Comment: 5 pages main text, 5 figures, technical appendices. IMPACT. 1: Since our first post in July of 2012 we have posted bi-monthly on topics that typically fall into one of three categories: personal stories, scientific explanations, or travel. -- 2. Our site has been viewed in over 95 countries with over 14,000 total views. We get over 500 unique visitors every month. -- 3. Several of our blog posts have been advertised on the National Science Foundation news site http://news.science360.gov/files/ and we are active on Twitter and Facebook.OSU PARTNERS: Department of Physics; Department of AstronomyCOMMUNITY PARTNERS: Center for Emergent MaterialsPRIMARY CONTACT: Amy Connolly ([email protected])"A Day in the Life in Physics at Ohio State University" is a blog aimed at showing young people, especially females, a sense of what it is like to live a life in physics. We aim to have a wide variety of perspectives by bringing in writers of different backgrounds, education levels, and genders to tell a story of their daily life or something or someone that has inspired them

What Differentiates Early Organization Adopters of Bitcoin From Non-Adopters?

    Get PDF
This paper describes a study to understand what differentiates organization adopters of Bitcoin from non-adopters by comparing their IT-readiness, innovativeness and social media presence. The craze over cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin has been likened to a modern-day gold rush, yet academic research has not caught up. Governments are struggling with the very idea of cryptocurrency systems. After the price of Bitcoin fell from 1,200to1,200 to 300 in 2014, consumer interest flagged, leaving the future of Bitcoin adoption uncertain despite a slow and steady increase of organization adopters. Organization adoption is more important than consumer, because consumers can’t use cryptocurrency if organizations don’t accept them as payment. This research serves as a basis for future research on Bitcoins and Bitcoin adoption by highlighting some important hurdles to its adoption as a new innovation, in the hope that such endeavors move us ever closer to the vision of a true “people’s currency.” AMCIS TV LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qVM4DQiTyk#action=shar

Volunteering 2.0: How Can Volunteer Organizations Employ Online Social Networks?

    Get PDF
The effectiveness of online social networks such as Facebook and Twitter for managing an organization is an area ripe for investigation in information systems research. Volunteer organizations in particular (who typically lag rather than lead in technology) stand to benefit from online social networks, if equipped with the knowledge to strategically implement these tools. This research context is especially unique because volunteers and employees approach work differently, which affects how they interact with the organization and its systems. We use the theory of functionalist motivations to support the use of online social networks to manage volunteers. Because this research area is relatively new, this study provides a theoretically-grounded exploration into how volunteer organizations are using online social networks to manage their volunteer workforce, in what ways they are using these systems, and their effectiveness compared to previous systems

Coping with the Dynamic Process of Technostress, Appraisal and Adaptation

    Get PDF
Despite its importance, the process of technostress remains significantly unstudied in MIS research. Here we reviewthe relevant literature on technostress and synthesize the coping model of user adaptation (Beaudry andPinsonneault, 2005) with transaction based models of technostress to align these theories with referent models ofstress, appraisal and adaptation. We posit that technostress should be studied as a dynamic, unfolding process, not asan assumed, static black box. We present a dynamic process model of technostress as it was intended by Caro andSethi (1985), which reconciles technostress with more than 60 years of stress research

Developing a New Generation of Alpha Project Managers

Alpha project managers lead more successful projects, because they plan and communicate more. How can we train more project managers to be like them? This paper describes a study to measure students’ emotional intelligence in an undergraduate course in IT project management. The course incorporated active learning exercises in interpersonal communication and emotional intelligence. This study is the second in an emerging and multi-stage research effort that started with new curriculum development at one university last year. In this study, we deployed the curriculum intervention in a second university and with a second group of students at the first university. Additionally, a formal measure of soft skills was adopted from the literature for validation in this context before we launch a broader study. This study is intended to provide empirical and theoretical evidence to support pedagogical interventions to help train the next generation of emotionally intelligent alpha project managers
