    Hydrometric Data Rescue in the Paraná River Basin

    The Parana River streamflow is the third largest in South America and the sixth largest in theworld. Thus, preserving historical Parana hydrometric data is relevant for understanding South American andglobal hydroclimate changes. In this work, we rescued paper format data of daily Parana water level observationstaken uninterruptedly at Rosario City, Argentina, from January 1875 to present. The rescue consisted ofthe following activities: (i) imaging and digitization of paper format data, (ii) application of quality checks andhomogeneity tests to the digitized water levels, and (iii) consideration of errors caused by gauge sinkings thatmay have occurred from 1875 to 1908. In addition, a rating curve was obtained for Rosario and it was used toconvert water levels into discharges. The rescued water level observations and their associated discharge dataprovide the longest (last 143 years) continuous hydrometric records of the Parana basin. The usefulness ofthese records was demonstrated by showing that the Parana-Pacific Ocean links observed after 1900 in previousstudies are also evidenced in our nineteenth-century discharge data. That is, high Parana discharges coincidedwith El Ni~no events and with El Ni~no-like states of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO), whereas lowdischarges coincided with La Ni~na events and with La Ni~na-like IPO states.Fil: Antico, Andres.     Fishers’ knowledge on a large floodplain river in South America. Contributions for sustainable management of inland fisheries

    This study presents a comparison between fishers’ knowledge and fiscal records about the structure of inland fisheries in the Paraná River (Argentina). First of all, we characterized the fishing population according to the main demographic and economic indicators, identifying two different fishing areas: the northern and southern sections in the lower La Plata basin. Secondly, we carried out a comparative analysis of fiscal fishery records (from two commercial sets: 1930–1984 and 2011–2019) and local fishers’ knowledge on inland commercial fisheries (frequency of occurrence and abundance). Finally, we contrasted current fishing regulations (allowed meshes and boats, fishing prohibitions, exports) to fishers’ effective practices. The study area included 52 sites located along the floodplain of the middle and lower sections of the Paraná River, in the province of Santa Fe. Socioeconomic analyses identified two different groups of fishers throughout the river corridor. Results showed that fishers have detailed knowledge on nomenclature, ecology, reproductive strategy, habitat distribution, and usefulness of commercial fish species. By contrasting fishers’ knowledge with fiscal records, we found similar and complementary information about the changes in abundance and frequency of occurrence in fisheries. These results highlight the need of including local knowledge as an outstanding source of information for well-planned management of fishing programs and sustainable policies.Fil: Rabuffetti, Ana Pia.     Influence of hydraulic conditions over dunes on the distribution of the benthic macroinvertebrates in a large sand bed river

    This study aims to relate the flow structure over mobile dunes recorded on the channel bed of the Paraná River (Argentina) with the spatial distribution of the benthic macroinvertebrates. The following main conclusions have been obtained: (1) the dunes found in the active channel could be considered as hydraulic biotopes at a mesohabitat scale: the bed forms in the thalweg region are subjected to higher shear stresses with low benthic densities; (2) differences in benthic densities were also recorded at within-dunes microhabitat scales: the largest densities were found in the dune troughs where small bed shear stresses occur and minimum densities on the low stoss side of dunes where turbulent agitation near the bottom strongly disturb the bed particles; (3) superimposed dunes on larger dunes may be considered as another microhabitat of still smaller dimensions. Summarizing, multiscale approaches are needed if a comprehensive understanding linking hydrodynamics and morphodynamics processes with benthic ecology is intended.Fil: Amsler, Mario Luis.     Morphology, flow structure, and suspended bed sediment transport at two large braid-bar confluences

    Mid-channel bars and their associated confluences are key morphodynamic nodes within braided rivers, with past studies having investigated the morphodynamics of small natural channels or laboratory models with relatively low width/depth (W/D) ratios, typically at <10. This paper investigates the morphology, suspended bed sediment distribution, and flow structure at two large braid bar confluences in the Río Parana (Argentina), wherein W/D ratios are much higher (approaching 100) than in smaller channels. The results highlight the significant control of the cross-sectional distribution of downstream flow velocity on confluence flow, suspended bed sediment concentration, and morphodynamics and indicate that this factor may become progressively more significant with increasing channel scale and W/D ratio, particularly when simple discharge (or momentum) ratios between the incoming flows are used to explain the flow dynamics. Additionally, secondary flow cells, often proposed to occupy a large part of the channel width in small river channel confluences, are only identified in relatively small portions of the channel width at these larger spatial scales. Such a restriction seems related to the generative mechanisms of secondary flows at these higher W/D ratios, which are likely to be dominated by turbulence generated along the mixing layer between the two flows and topographic influences that limit the spatial extent of these effects.     The influence of hydro‐climatic and anthropogenic effects on the long‐term variation of commercial fisheries in a large floodplain river

    This study deals with the effects of climate fluctuations and anthropogenic impacts on fisheries of Paraná River over the last 100 years. It is the first attempt to appraise the influence of hydro-climatic and anthropogenic variables on the population changes of the most important inland fisheries of Argentina. Datasets covering more than eight decades (1935–2016) of a number of frequent and abundant commercial species inhabiting the main channel as well as the large floodplain of Paraná River were used. Our results suggest that fish catches and structure changed over time. Long and short-term changes and reductions were closely related to fluctuations of 18 hydro-climatic variables. Positive effects on the ichthyofauna were recorded during humid periods (1930–1940 and 1970–2000), when the frequency of large spring–summer floods increased. An increase in anthropic impacts (accounted for with nine variables) were recorded during the last two decades. We highlight the usefulness of the approach to support the management of the resources, ensuring sustainability of commercial fish assemblages and the long-term conservation of biodiversity in big rivers.Fil: Rabuffetti, Ana Pia.     Extremes in dune preservation: controls on the completeness of fluvial deposits

    Understanding sedimentary preservation underpins our ability to interpret the ancient sedimentary record and reconstruct palaeoenvironments and palaeoclimates. Dune sets are ubiquitous in preserved river deposits and are typically interpreted based on a model that that describes the recurrence of erosion in a vertical sequence, but without consideringspatial variability. However, spatial variability in flow and sediment transport will change the recurrence of erosion, and therefore dune preservation. In order to better understand the limits of these Interpretations and outline the causes of potential variability in preservation potential, this paper reviews existing work and presents new observations of an extreme end-member of dune preservation: ?form-sets?, formed by dunes in which both stoss- and lee- slopes are preserved Intact. These form-sets do not conform to models that are based on the recurrence of erosion, since erosion does not recur in their case, and can therefore be used to evaluate the assumptions that underpin sedimentary preservation. New Ground Penetrating Radar data from the Río Paraná, Argentina, show dune fields that are buried intact within larger scale barforms. These trains of form-sets are up to 300 m in length, are restricted to unit-bar troughs in the upper 5 m of the channel deposits, occur in >5% of the mid-channel bar deposits, show reactivation surfaces, occur in multiple levels, and match the size of average-flow dunes. A review of published accounts of form-sets highlights a diversity of processes that can be envisaged for their formation: i) abandonment after extreme floods, ii) slow burial of abandoned dune forms by cohesive clay in sheltered bar troughs and meander-neck cut-offs, iii) fast burial by mass-movement processes, and iv)climbing of dune sets due to local dominance of deposition over dune migration.Analysis of these new and published accounts of form-sets and their burial processes highlights that form-sets need not be indicative of extreme floods. Instead, form-sets are closely associated with surrounding geomorphology such as river banks, meander-neck cutoffs,and bars because this larger-scale context controls the local sediment budget and the nature of recurrence of erosion. Locally enhanced preservation by the ?extreme? dominance of deposition is further promoted by finer grain sizes and prolonged changes in flow stage. Such conditions are characteristic, although not exclusive, of large lowland rivers such as the Río Paraná. The spatial control on dune preservation is critical: although at-a-point models adequately describe near-horizontal sets of freely migrating dunes in uniform flows, they are unsuitable for inclined dune co-sets and other cases where multiple scales of bedforms interact. Spatial and temporal variations in flow and sediment transport betweenthe thalweg and different positions on larger bar-forms can change the preservation potential of dunes within river channels. Therefore, dune set thickness distributions are likely grouped in larger-scale units that reflect both formative dune geometries and bar-scale variations inpreservation potential.     The impact of significant input of fine sediment on benthic fauna at tributary junctions: a case study of the Bermejo-Paraguay River confluence, Argentina

    This study examines the morphological features, suspended sediment inputs and hydraulic conditions within a large river in association with ecological patterns before and after a tributary confluence. In order to examine these effects, the macroinvertebrate distributions from three reaches of the Paraguay and Bermejo Rivers (Paraguay-Argentina) are investigated. The Bermejo River is a tributary that supplies significant quantities of fine sediment to the Paraguay River, primarily in suspension. Two reaches were examined on the Paraguay River, upstream and downstream of the Bermejo River junction, with the third study reach located on the Bermejo River, upstream of the confluence with the Paraguay River. The results provide clear evidence that a significantly increased loading of fine sediment at a river confluence has effects on the distribution and potential movement of benthic invertebrates in the lotic environment by representing physical barriers at affected sites. These effects may be important at both local and regional scales, and such increases in suspended sediment (especially associated with anthropogenic change) may thus pose a major threat to ecosystem integrity that has been historically underestimated

    Hydrodynamic and morphologic effects on the benthic invertebrate ecology along a meander bend of a large river (Paraguay River, Argentina-Paraguay)

    A detailed hydro-ecological study to identify the effects of bed flow and morphodynamic processes on the distribution (and composition) of benthic invertebrates in a large river is presented herein. A crossing-pool sequence in a meander bend of the Paraguay River (Paraguay-Argentina) was examined. According to the results, there is a link between the benthic fauna, hydraulic and bed sediment size along the bend. The meander pool, with a deep scour hole and the largest bed shear stresses, would be a hostile area for benthic invertebrates, since lower densities were found there. A transversal analysis revealed two different invertebrate assemblages at each of the sampled cross sections: one across the mobile bottom with higher densities but lower diversity, richness and evenness than the other one found close to the banks. On the other hand, a comparison between both Paraguay and Paraná rivers revealed that the first one would seem to have optimal hydraulic conditions for the invertebrate's development, because the hydraulic energy of the Paraná River was too intense for the favorable settlement of benthic organisms at some specific habitats. The overall conclusion of this paper, that morpho-hydraulic features and biotopes are related, is an important step forward in river ecohydrology.     Crecimiento aguas arriba de bancos de arena e islas en el río Paraná

    La identificación de algunas de las variables que intervienen en los procesos que dan origen a bancos e islas de cauce y controlan su evolución, se ha basado mayormente en estudios realizados en ríos pequeños y medianos o en experimentos de laboratorio con sedimento relativamente grueso donde predomina la carga de fondo. Si bien en investigaciones recientes se ha aportado información detallada acerca de esa dinámica en grandes ríos con fondo de arena, aún se carece de suficientes conocimientos referidos a los mecanismos relacionados con el transporte de sedimento de fondo en suspensión que inciden en su origen y evolución. La excepción la constituyen investigaciones llevadas a cabo en algunos grandes ríos asiáticos. En este trabajo se brindan datos surgidos de trabajos de campo y del análisis de cartas de navegación, fotografías aéreas e imágenes satelitales de un proceso fluvial poco investigado como lo es el crecimiento de bancos de arena aguas arriba del frente de islas y bancos en el río Paraná, uno de los más grandes de Sudamérica.     Discrimination of hydrologic variations for spatial distribution of fish assemblage in a large subtropical temperate river

    This study examines the effects of the flow and flood pulses on spatialdispersion of fish assemblages in the floodplain of the Paraná River in Argentina. Wetested the hypothesis that high water levels and greater lateral connectivity promotefish dispersal and spatial homogenization of assemblage structure. We sampled foursites during different phases of the annual hydrologic cycle from 2010 to 2016. Watersurface in the area was estimated during each phase. We computed multivariatestatistics and estimates of ß-diversity to analyze assemblage variations in relation tohydrological phases. Three hydrological phases were defined: low flow pulses (waterlevels between 2.3 and 3.2, approximately 10% of the floodplain covered by water),high flow pulses(between 3.2 and 4.5, from 11 to 84%), and floods (> 4.5 m, morethan 84%). Although difference between high flow pulses and flood was notsignificant, ß-diversity values for these stages were higher than for low flow pulses.This suggests that floods and high flow pulses increase the spatial variability of fishassemblages, whereas homogenization processes occur later during low flowperiods. This work provides further knowledge about the flood homogenization effectin a large unregulated floodplain where lateral connectivity still plays a significant roleon ecological structuring processes.Fil: Espínola, Luis Alberto.
