A note on Kerr/CFT and free fields

The near-horizon geometry of the extremal four-dimensional Kerr black hole and certain generalizations thereof has an SL(2,R) x U(1) isometry group. Excitations around this geometry can be controlled by imposing appropriate boundary conditions. For certain boundary conditions, the U(1) isometry is enhanced to a Virasoro algebra. Here, we propose a free-field construction of this Virasoro algebra.Comment: 10 pages, v2: comments and references adde

Validation of the vaccine conspiracy beliefs scale

AbstractBackgroundParents’ vaccine attitudes influence their decision regarding child vaccination. To date, no study has evaluated the impact of vaccine conspiracy beliefs on human papillomavirus vaccine acceptance. The authors assessed the validity of a Vaccine Conspiracy Beliefs Scale (VCBS) and determined whether this scale was associated with parents’ willingness to vaccinate their son with the HPV vaccine.MethodsCanadian parents completed a 24-min online survey in 2014. Measures included socio-demographic variables, HPV knowledge, health care provider recommendation, Conspiracy Mentality Questionnaire (CMQ), the seven-item VCBS, and parents’ willingness to vaccinate their son at two price points.ResultsA total of 1427 Canadian parents completed the survey in English (61.2%) or French (38.8%). A Factor Analysis revealed the VCBS is one-dimensional and has high internal consistency (α=0.937). The construct validity of the VCBS was supported by a moderate relationship with the CMQ (r=0.44, p<0.001). Hierarchical regression analyses found the VCBS is negatively related to parents’ willingness to vaccinate their son with the HPV vaccine at both price points (‘free’ or ‘$300′) after controlling for gender, age, household income, education level, HPV knowledge, and health care provider recommendation.ConclusionsThe VCBS is a brief, valid scale that will be useful in further elucidating the correlates of vaccine hesitancy. Future research could use the VCBS to evaluate the impact of vaccine conspiracies beliefs on vaccine uptake and how concerns about vaccination may be challenged and reversed

On the Stress Tensor of Kerr/CFT

The recently-conjectured Kerr/CFT correspondence posits a field theory dual to dynamics in the near-horizon region of an extreme Kerr black hole with certain boundary conditions. We construct a boundary stress tensor for this theory via covariant phase space techniques. The structure of the stress tensor indicates that any dual theory is a discrete light cone quantum theory, in agreement with recent arguments by Balasubramanian et al. The key technical step in our construction is the addition of an appropriate counter-term to the symplectic structure, which is necessary to make the theory fully covariant and to resolve a subtle problem involving the integrability of charges.Comment: 19 page

Near Extremal Kerr Entropy from AdS_2 Quantum Gravity

We analyze the asymptotic symmetries of near extremal Kerr black holes in four dimensions using the AdS_2/CFT_1 correspondence. We find a Virasoro algebra with central charge c_R=12J that is independent from the Virasoro algebra (with the same central charge) that acts on the degenerate ground state. The energy of the excitations is computed as well, and we can use Cardy's formula to determine the near extremal entropy. Our result is consistent with the Bekenstein-Hawking area law for near extremal Kerr black holes.Comment: 28 pages. v2: references added, typos correcte

    A near-NHEK/CFT correspondence

We consider excitations around the recently introduced near-NHEK metric describing the near-horizon geometry of the near-extremal four-dimensional Kerr black hole. This geometry has a U(1)_L x U(1)_R isometry group which can be enhanced to a pair of commuting Virasoro algebras. We present boundary conditions for which the conserved charges of the corresponding asymptotic symmetries are well defined and non-vanishing and find the central charges c_L=12J/hbar and c_R=0 where J is the angular momentum of the black hole. Applying the Cardy formula reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole. This suggests that the near-extremal Kerr black hole is holographically dual to a non-chiral two-dimensional conformal field theory.Comment: 11 pages, v2: references updated, adde

On the CFT duals for near-extremal black holes

We consider Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS black holes near extremality and work out the near-horizon geometry of these near-extremal black holes. We identify the exact U(1)_L x U(1)_R isometries of the near-horizon geometry and provide boundary conditions enhancing them to a pair of commuting Virasoro algebras. The conserved charges of the corresponding asymptotic symmetries are found to be well defined and non-vanishing and to yield central charges c_L\neq0 and c_R=0. The Cardy formula subsequently reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole. This suggests that the near-extremal Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS black hole is holographically dual to a non-chiral two-dimensional conformal field theory.Comment: 11 page

Investigating Canadian parents' HPV vaccine knowledge, attitudes and behaviour: a study protocol for a longitudinal national online survey

    Get PDF
Introduction Human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, can cause anogenital warts and a number of cancers. To prevent morbidity and mortality, three vaccines have been licensed and are recommended by Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunisation (for girls since 2007 and boys since 2012). Nevertheless, HPV vaccine coverage in Canada remains suboptimal in many regions. This study will be the first to concurrently examine the correlates of HPV vaccine decision-making in parents of school-aged girls and boys and evaluate changes in parental knowledge, attitudes and behaviours over time. Methods and analysis Using a national, online survey utilising theoretically driven constructs and validated measures, this study will identify HPV vaccine coverage rates and correlates of vaccine decision-making in Canada at two time points (August–September 2016 and June–July 2017). 4606 participants will be recruited to participate in an online survey through a market research and polling firm using email invitations. Data cleaning methods will identify inattentive or unmotivated participants. Ethics and dissemination The study received research ethics board approval from the Research Review Office, Integrated Health and Social Services University Network for West-Central Montreal (CODIM-FLP-16–219). The study will adopt a multimodal approach to disseminate the study’s findings to researchers, clinicians, cancer and immunisation organisations and the public in Canada and internationally

    The RN/CFT Correspondence Revisited

We reconsidered the quantum gravity description of the near horizon extremal Reissner-Nordstr{\o}m black hole in the viewpoint of the AdS2_2/CFT1_1 correspondence. We found that, for pure electric case, the right moving central charge of dual 1D CFT is 6Q26 Q^2 which is different from the previous result 6Q36 Q^3 of left moving sector obtained by warped AdS3_3/CFT2_2 description. We discussed the discrepancy in these two approaches and examined novel properties of our result.Comment: revtex4, 16 pages, sign mistakes corrected, references include

Holographic Duals of Near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom Black Holes

We consider the AdS3/CFT2\mathrm{AdS}_3/\mathrm{CFT}_2 description of Reissner-Nordstr{\o}m black holes by studying their uplifted counterparts in five dimensions. Assuming a natural size of the extra dimension, the near horizon geometries for the extremal limit are exactly AdS3×S2\mathrm{AdS}_3 \times \mathrm{S}^2. We compute the scattering amplitude of a scalar field, with a mode near threshold of frequency and extra dimensional momentum, by a near extremal uplifted black hole. The absorption cross section agrees with the two point function of the CFT dual to the scalar field.Comment: reference added, improper statements corrected, 17 pages, no figure

Hidden Conformal Symmetry of the Reissner-Nordstr{\o}m Black Holes

Motivated by recent progresses in the holographic descriptions of the Kerr and Reissner-Nordstr{\o}m (RN) black holes, we explore the hidden conformal symmetry of nonextremal uplifted 5D RN black hole by studying the near horizon wave equation of a massless scalar field propagating in this background. Similar to the Kerr black hole case, this hidden symmetry is broken by the periodicity of the associated angle coordinate in the background geometry, but the results somehow testify the dual CFT description of the nonextremal RN black holes. The duality is further supported by matching of the entropies and absorption cross sections calculated from both CFT and gravity sides.Comment: 14 pages, no figur
