    Stability and Aggregation Kinetics of Titania Nanomaterials under Environmentally Realistic Conditions.

    Nanoparticle morphology is expected to play a significant role in the stability, aggregation behaviour and ultimate fate of engineered nanomaterials in natural aquatic environments. The aggregation kinetics of ellipsoidal and spherical titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) under different surfactant loadings, pH values and ionic strengths were investigated in this study. The stability results revealed that alteration of surface charge was the stability determining factor. Among five different surfactants investigated, sodium citrate and Suwannee river fulvic acid (SRFA) were the most effective stabilizers. It was observed that both types of NPs were more stable in monovalent salts (NaCl and NaNO3) as compared with divalent salts (Ca(NO3)2 and CaCl2). The aggregation of spherical TiO2 NPs demonstrated a strong dependency on the ionic strength regardless of the presence of mono or divalent salts; while the ellipsoids exhibited a lower dependency on the ionic strength but was more stable. This work acts as a benchmark study towards understanding the ultimate fate of stabilized NPs in natural environments that are rich in Ca(CO3)2, NaNO3, NaCl and CaCl2 along with natural organic matters

    In Situ Production of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles in a Binary Molten Salt for Concentrated Solar Power Plant Applications

    Seeding nanoparticles in molten salts has been shown recently as a promising way to improve their thermo-physical properties. The prospect of such technology is of interest to both academic and industrial sectors in order to enhance the specific heat capacity of molten salt. The latter is used in concentrated solar power plants as both heat transfer fluid and sensible storage. This work explores the feasibility of producing and dispersing nanoparticles with a novel one pot synthesis method. Using such a method, CuO nanoparticles were produced in situ via the decomposition of copper sulphate pentahydrate in a KNO3-NaNO3 binary salt. Analyses of the results suggested preferential disposition of atoms around produced nanoparticles in the molten salt. Thermal characterization of the produced nano-salt suspension indicated the dependence of the specific heat enhancement on particle morphology and distribution within the salts

    Does the labor market structure explain differences in poverty in rural Punjab?

    The main focus of this study is Rural Punjab and it contributes to regional poverty research in two ways; first, using a more recent household survey data, carried out in August 2007 by the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), it provides fresh poverty estimates for the rural areas of the Punjab. Second, the poverty differential across the agroclimatic zones of Punjab have been explained by urbanization, overseas migration and the labor market structure operating in these zones. This study shows four major factors that explain inequalities in poverty levels. First, the rural areas of two zones, barani and rice/wheat, are well integrated with urban settings. This integration has allowed their rural populations to work in the industrial sector of Central Punjab and the services sector in North Punjab primarily Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Second, the belt from Lahore to Attock in the Punjab has benefited the most from overseas migration. The flow of remittances has helped in reducing poverty levels. Third, the cotton/wheat and low intensity zone still largely depend for employment on the agricultural sector while this dependency is very low in the barani zone, which has good opportunity to seek job opportunities for its labor force in the armed services and government departments. Finally, demographic and social factors including education are less favorable in the cotton/wheat and low intensity zones which negatively impacts on a breakthrough in poverty reduction

    People with Parkinson's Disease: What Symptoms Do They Most Want to Improve and How Does This Change with Disease Duration?

    BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition with a diverse and complex pattern of motor and non-motor symptoms which change over time with disease duration. OBJECTIVE: The aims of the present study were to discover what symptoms matter most to people with the condition and to examine how these priorities change with disease duration. METHODS: A simple free-text online survey (using SmartSurvey) was developed by Parkinson's UK, which asked participants to identify up to three aspects of the condition they would most like to see improvement in. RESULTS: 790 people participated reporting 2,295 issues related to PD which were grouped into 24 broad symptom domains. Of these, 1,358 (59.1%) were categorised as motor symptoms, 859 (37.4%) as non-motor issues and 78 (3.4%) as medication problems. This study reveals how certain features of PD become more or less important to patients as the condition progresses. Non-motor symptoms were highly cited from the very earliest stages of PD. Problems with walking, balance and falls, speech problems, freezing and dyskinesia become increasingly important as the condition progresses whereas tremor, stiffness and psychological health become decreasingly important as the condition progresses. CONCLUSIONS: The data suggest that the priorities of people affected by PD for improving life are personal and change with duration of the condition. These findings have implications for developing person-centred management and care, as well as for directing future research to improve quality of life

    Skin cancer classifier based on convolution residual neural network

    Accurate automatic classification of skin lesion images is a great challenge as the image features are very close in these images. Convolution neural networks (CNN) promise to provide a potential classifier for skin lesions. This work will present dermatologist-level classification of skin cancer by using residual network (ResNet-50) as a deep learning convolutional neural network (DLCNN) that maps images to class labels. It presents a classifier with a single CNN to automatically recognize benign and malignant skin images. The network inputs are only disease labels and image pixels. About 320 clinical images of the different diseases have been used to train CNN. The model performance has been tested with untrained images from the two labels. This model identifies the most common skin cancers and can be updated with a new unlimited number of images. The DLCNN trained by the ResNet-50 model showed good classification of the benign and malignant skin categories. The ResNet-50 as a DLCNN has verified a significant recognition rate of more than 97% on the testing images, which proves that the benign and malignant lesion skin images are properly classified

    Anomalous left brachiocephalic vein: important vascular anomaly concomitant with congenital anomalies and heart diseases

    Background: Anomalous left brachiocephalic vein (ALBCV) is a rare and less known systemic venous anomaly. Infrequently, this vein takes an abnormal course and passes to the right behind or beneath the aortic arch to create the superior vena cava (SVC). Its incidence was reported much higher in patients with congenital heart disease especially in conotruncal and aortic arch anomalies. It could be misdiagnosed with normal or abnormal mediastinal structures. It also could make complication during surgeries or invasive strategies. Previously, this anatomical finding has been reported in case reports and there are just few studies evaluating these patients as a group to find other abnormalities Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective, multicentre study between 2008 and 2014 at three institutions. We reviewed thoracic computed tomography angiography of 1372 patients referred to these centres. The diagnosis of ALBCV was confirmed by an expert radiologist and the imagings were reassessed to identify new cases and concomitant anomalies. We analysed the imagings’ details and measured the prevalence of each anomaly. Results: Among the 22 cases of ALBCV, 12 (54.5%) and 10 (45.4%) patients were males and females, respectively, with median age of 12.5 years. Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) was considered as a most concomitant anomaly with ALBCV (54.5%). Two patients had associated atrial septal defect (ASD) and defined as pentalogy of Fallot. Right-sided aortic arc (RSAA) was detected in 12 (54.5%) patients; mirror image was found in 5 of them. Pure ventricular septal defect or pulmonary stenosis without TOF was recognised in 4 patients. Three cases had isolated overriding aorta (13.6%). In 3 patients, we could find patent ductus arteriosus (13.6%). In 2 (9%) patients, abdominal haemangioma was incidentally diagnosed. Aberrant left retrotracheal subclavian artery was detected in 1 (4.5%) patient. One patient only had isolated ALBCV (4.5%). Conclusions: In our study, ALBCV was frequently seen in association with other congenital anomalies. mostly TOF and RSAA. In patients with pulmonary hypoplasia or aplasia, some parts of lung’s blood supply were provided by abnormal aorto-pulmonary connections. For a radiologist, it is important to differentiate this anomaly in cross-sectional imaging from persistent left SVC, partial anomalous pulmonary veins return and an enlarged lymph node. Detection of ALBCV could draw the attention to the more serious heart disease and in isolated forms prevented further evaluations.

    Form factors for B−−>πlνB-->\pi l\nu decay in a model constrained by chiral symmetry and quark model

    The form factors for the B−−>πB-->\pi transition are evaluated in the entire momentum transfer range by using the constraints obtained in the framework combining the heavy quark expansion and chiral symmetry for light quarks and the quark model. In particular, we calculate the valence quark contributions and show that it together with the equal time commutator contribution simulate a B-meson pole q^2-dependence of form factors in addition to the usual vector meson B^{*}-pole diagram for B−−>πlνB --> \pi l\nu in the above framework.
