    This research aims to determine how much influence leg muscle power, back muscle flexibility, and hand-eye coordination have on the smash ability of volleyball athletes. This research uses the Path Analysis method. The population of this study was 32 athletes, and the entire population was used as a sample. The final results show: The analysis results show that leg muscle power (X1) has a significant relationship and makes a significant contribution to smash ability. The research results show that back muscle flexibility (X2) has a significant relationship and contributes significantly to smash ability. The analysis results show that eye-hand coordination (X3) has a significant relationship and contributes significantly to smash ability. The results of the joint analysis (X1,2,3) show that leg muscle power, back muscle flexibility, and hand-eye coordination have a significant relationship and contribute significantly to smash ability. Results of multiple correlation analysis of 3 predictors with Fcount 9.33 > Ftable 2.88. This means a significant relationship exists between leg muscle power, back muscle flexibility, eye-hand coordination, and smash ability in volleyball athletes. In conclusion, there is a significant influence between leg muscle power, back muscle flexibility, and hand-eye coordination on the smash ability of volleyball athletes..     In silico Prediction and Validations of Domains Involved in Gossypium hirsutum SnRK1 Protein Interaction With Cotton Leaf Curl Multan Betasatellite Encoded βC1

    Cotton leaf curl disease (CLCuD) caused by viruses of genus Begomovirus is a major constraint to cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) production in many cotton-growing regions of the world. Symptoms of the disease are caused by Cotton leaf curl Multan betasatellite (CLCuMB) that encodes a pathogenicity determinant protein, βC1. Here, we report the identification of interacting regions in βC1 protein by using computational approaches including sequence recognition, and binding site and interface prediction methods. We show the domain-level interactions based on the structural analysis of G. hirsutum SnRK1 protein and its domains with CLCuMB-βC1. To verify and validate the in silico predictions, three different experimental approaches, yeast two hybrid, bimolecular fluorescence complementation and pull down assay were used. Our results showed that ubiquitin-associated domain (UBA) and autoinhibitory sequence (AIS) domains of G. hirsutum-encoded SnRK1 are involved in CLCuMB-βC1 interaction. This is the first comprehensive investigation that combined in silico interaction prediction followed by experimental validation of interaction between CLCuMB-βC1 and a host protein. We demonstrated that data from computational biology could provide binding site information between CLCuD-associated viruses/satellites and new hosts that lack known binding site information for protein–protein interaction studies. Implications of these findings are discussed

    Is vaccine the magic bullet for malaria elimination? A reality check

    Malaria remains a major health burden especially for the developing countries. Despite concerted efforts at using the current control tools, such as bed nets, anti malarial drugs and vector control measures, the disease is accountable for close to a million deaths annually. Vaccines have been proposed as a necessary addition to the armamentarium that could work towards elimination and eventual eradication of malaria in view of their historical significance in combating infectious diseases. However, because malaria vaccines would work differently depending on the targeted parasite stage, this review addresses the potential impact various malaria vaccine types could have on transmission. Further, because of the wide variation in the epidemiology of malaria across the endemic regions, this paper proposes that the ideal approach to malaria control ought to be tailor-made depending on the specific context. Finally, it suggests that although it is highly desirable to anticipate and aim for malaria elimination and eventual eradication, many affected regions should prioritize reduction of mortality and morbidity before aspiring for elimination

    Reliability of a Telemedicine System Designed for Rural Kenya

    Objective: Access to health care in rural areas of developing nations is hindered by both the lack of physicians and the preference of many physicians to practice in urban settings. As a result, rural patients often choose not to sacrifice wages or time to visit distant health care providers. A telemedicine system, Mashavu: Networked Health Solutions, designed to increase access to preprimary health care in rural areas, was field-tested in rural Kenya. This study aims to examine the reliability of the system compared to the traditional face-to-face method of health care delivery. Method: Reliability of the telemedicine system was tested using a modified intraobserver concordance study. Community health workers operated the system in various remote locations. Patient health information including chief complaint, medical history, and vital statistics were sent via Internet to a consulting nurse. After patients completed the telemedicine consultation, they also met in-person with the same nurse. Subsequently, the nurse’s advice during the in-person session was compared with his feedback provided through the telemedicine consultation. Results: When comparing the nurse’s advice given through the telemedicine system with the advice given through more traditional face-to-face, in-person consultation, the nurse provided consistent medical feedback in 78.4% of the cases (n = 102). The nurse’s advice regarding patient action (eg, clinical referrals or no further care necessary) was the same in 89.2% of the cases (n = 91). Conclusion: The study found that this telemedicine system was able to provide patients with approximately the same quality of care and advice as if the patient had physically travelled to a clinic to see a nurse. In rural areas of developing nations where there are high logistical and economical barriers to accessing health care, this telemedicine system successfully increased the ease and lowered the cost of connecting rural patients with nurses to provide preprimary care

    Begomoviruses interfere with host plant machinery to evade host defense mechanism by interacting with plant proteins. In the old world, this group of viruses are usually associated with betasatellite that induces severe disease symptoms by encoding a protein, βC1, which is a pathogenicity determinant. Here, we show that βC1 encoded by Cotton leaf curl Multan betasatellite (CLCuMB) requires Gossypium hirsutum calmodulin-like protein 11 (Gh-CML11) to infect cotton. First, we used the in silico approach to predict the interaction of CLCuMB-βC1 with Gh-CML11. A number of sequence- and structure-based in-silico interaction prediction techniques suggested a strong putative binding of CLCuMB-βC1 with Gh-CML11 in a Ca+2-dependent manner. In-silico interaction prediction was then confirmed by three different experimental approaches: The Gh-CML11 interaction was confirmed using CLCuMB-βC1 in a yeast two hybrid system and pull down assay. These results were further validated using bimolecular fluorescence complementation system showing the interaction in cytoplasmic veins of Nicotiana benthamiana. Bioinformatics and molecular studies suggested that CLCuMB-βC1 induces the overexpression of Gh-CML11 protein and ultimately provides calcium as a nutrient source for virus movement and transmission. This is the first comprehensive study on the interaction between CLCuMB-βC1 and Gh-CML11 proteins which provided insights into our understating of the role of βC1 in cotton leaf curl disease
