The Geopolitical Meaning of a Contemporary Visual Arts Upsurge on the Canada-US Border

International audienceTheir common border can be seen as a synecdoche of the complex relationship that ties Canada and the United States together: not only is it the longest border in the world (at 8,891 kilometres--5,061 kilometres on land and 3,830 kilometres at sea), but also it represents a line where strong and soft politics and geopolitics converge. One can say that the border not only divides the two states but reflects their relations. Until recently, the border was considered one of the most "benign" the world--an exceptional label, considering the border's length. The changes that have recently affected the Canada-US border are symptomatic of post-9/11 bilateral relations, as well as indicators of more general geopolitical trends. Through analysis of three contemporary art projects, I hypothesize that the visual art upsurge in the borderlands between Canada and the United States represents a strong reaction to a rebordering, which this art both enacts and denounce

Nords-Suds, Suds-Nords : les sciences du territoire peuvent-elles servir de fondement à un modèle de développement ?

International audienceThe paradigm of " territory " within French regional sciences is far from being shared by the international academic communities. Our research reveals that the Anglophone scientific world seems to easily operate with the notions of " region " , " place " or " local " when conceiving development models and strategies at subnational level. Our communication intends to compare different approaches towards regional (territorial) development which have been generated by the new universalised ideology conceiving the subnational level as the most relevant resource for political, economic and social action in the era of globalisation. We here focus on two major results of this research: on the one hand, the Anglophone literature reveals a growing interest for " territory " as a concept by overcoming its political connotation. Our analysis of scientific approaches in the Global South shows how " territory " has implicitly been incorporated in the writings of some of the main contributors to the " post-development " thinking and highlights the emergence of an alternative territorial development model.Le paradigme du « développement territorial », tel qu'il s'est instauré en sciences régionales et celles de l'aménagement en France, semble loin d'être partagé hors de l'hexagone. Notre recherche révèle que d'autres communautés scientifiques, notamment anglophones, opèrent aisément avec les notions de « region » et « place », voir « local » en concevant des modèles et stratégies de développement à l'échelle infranationale. Notre communication tente de comparer les différentes approches du développement s'inscrivant dans la nouvelle idéologie universalisée, concevant l'échelle infranationale comme ressource d'action politique, économique et sociale à l'ère de la mondialisation. Notre constat est double : le territoire, en tant que concept, gagne de l'intérêt au sein des réflexions menées dans d'autres pays occidentaux sur et ne reste plus cantonné au domaine politique. Un détour par les Suds montre que provient de l'hémisphère Sud une approche alternative de ce qui pourrait être désigné, en France, comme le développement territorial, et notamment comme « projet de territoire »-sous forme d'un détournement radical du capitalisme et de la notion de développement elle-même
