Integration of US marine coprs aviation with the Royal Air Force in First World War: Legacy and impact

This thesis examines the precarious early years in Marine Corps aviation, the difficulties between the Americans and British before, and during the First World War and the integration with the Royal Air Force-all to see the positive impact of the integration on the future of Marine aviation. In 1912, the first United States Marine was admitted as a student aviator at the Naval Aviation School in Annapolis, Maryland. Then-1st Lieutenant Alfred A. Cunningham sparked a movement within the seagoing service, a movement that he shepherded through the earliest days of military aviation into a small combat force that competently performed in the First World War and later solidified its existence through service in the interwar period of the 1920s and 1930s. The Marine Corps' aviation component suffered through competition with their Navy brethren's desire to eliminate the whole Corps in the early twentieth century. Under Cunningham's leadership, the Marines arrived in France ready to perform antisubmarine warfare duty only to find themselves without the requisite aircraft. It was this unfortunate event that lead to the Marines service with the Royal Air Force, which in turn provided the Marines with skills that were utilized again during the 'Banana Wars.

Understanding International Similarities and Differences in Corporate Community Involvement: The Case of Capital One

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a highly dynamic and contestable concept in today’s global marketplace (Matten & Moon, 2004). One area of CSR is Corporate Community Involvement (CCI) or a “corporation’s engagement with local communities, special interest groups and issues of concern, above and beyond the day-to-day operations, often working in partnership with not-for-profit organizations” (Tuffrey, 1998). CCI drives business decision-making to make a significant and sustainable impact in communities around the world. At the same time, CCI practices vary from firm to firm and country to country. To gain a better understanding of CCI internationally, this dissertation asks what explains the similarities and differences in CCI between different countries? This research is located within existing research on CSR and CCI. It then uses institutional theory to evaluate the cultural contexts of CCI in the United States of America (USA) and the United Kingdom (UK). This research evaluates at the case of Capital One Financial Corporation that is headquartered in the USA with a large subsidiary in the UK. Through documentary analysis and in-depth interviews, CCI was examined in both countries to understand the similarities and differences. This dissertation found that CCI was motivated by both internal and external factors. Through content analysis, themes were identified to explain the choices of localized and standardized approaches to CCI. The more localized strategy in the UK was due to the relationship within the MNC, national business systems, organizational structure, organizational leadership, and philanthropic contributions. At the same time, there are some standardized strategies that led to similarities in CCI between the USA and UK. These include the motives of CCI, certain CCI initiatives, similar corporate culture, and the support of employee volunteerism. These findings both supported and contradicted previous research on CCI. Overall, this dissertation added to the conversation on CSR to have a better understanding of CCI in different countries and to assist other companies with their implementation strategies

ObjectivesTo describe the clinicopathologic findings, imaging results, surgical treatment, and outcome of a dog with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and paraneoplastic hypoglycemia.AnimalsA 13-year-old female spayed mixed breed dog that was presented for facial twitching and neurologic decline and diagnosed with a renal mass and paraneoplastic hypoglycemia.Study designCase report.MethodsSerum chemistry revealed severe hypoglycemia and normal renal values. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a large, heterogeneous, cavitated mass associated with the left kidney and no evidence of abdominal metastatic disease. Thoracic radiographs revealed no evidence of pulmonary metastatic disease. Fasted serum insulin was low concurrently with severe hypoglycemia. No other causes of hypoglycemia were detected, and paraneoplastic hypoglycemia was suspected.ResultsAfter initial medical management of the dog's hypoglycemia, left nephroureterectomy was performed. Histopathology was consistent with RCC. Postoperatively, the dog's hypoglycemia resolved, and supplementation was discontinued. The dog remained stable and was discharged from the hospital 3 days after surgery. At 2-week, 3-month, and 5-month follow up evaluations, the dog remained euglycemic, and no definitive evidence of disease progression was detected. Eight months postoperatively, the dog was euthanized due to decline in mobility. Necropsy and histopathology revealed cerebral and spinal cord multifocal myelin sheath dilation and two primary pulmonary carcinomas with no evidence of recurrence or metastasis of the RCC.ConclusionSurgical treatment of RCC with subsequent resolution of paraneoplastic hypoglycemia has not previously been reported in veterinary medicine. In this dog, nephroureterectomy for RCC resulted in immediate and sustained resolution of paraneoplastic hypoglycemia
