    Detection of a Third Planet in the HD 74156 System Using the Hobby-Eberly Telescope

    We report the discovery of a third planetary mass companion to the G0 star HD 74156. High precision radial velocity measurements made with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope aided the detection of this object. The best fit triple Keplerian model to all the available velocity data yields an orbital period of 347 days and minimum mass of 0.4 M_Jup for the new planet. We determine revised orbital periods of 51.7 and 2477 days, and minimum masses of 1.9 and 8.0 M_Jup respectively for the previously known planets. Preliminary calculations indicate that the derived orbits are stable, although all three planets have significant orbital eccentricities (e = 0.64, 0.43, and 0.25). With our detection, HD 74156 becomes the eighth normal star known to host three or more planets. Further study of this system's dynamical characteristics will likely give important insight to planet formation and evolutionary processes.Comment: 24 pages, 4 tables, 6 figures.     2015-2016 Data Management Strategic Agenda - Final Report

    Between January 2015 - December 2016, the Albertsons Library’s Core Data Management Team, consisting of Michelle Armstrong, Megan Davis, Heather Grevatt (2016 - present), Margie Ruppel (2015 - 2016), and Amber Sherman, established a 2 year Strategic Agenda and engaged in a variety of activities to ensure the proactive management of Boise State’s data sets. During this period, the Team accomplished several key goals: Increased the library’s capacity to support Boise State researchers in managing and making publicly available data sets, and deliver services at key points throughout the research lifecycle including data management planning, data description, research dissemination, and researcher education. Developed relationships with faculty, research groups, and other university support services to identify and deliver needed services. Began the development of a technical and workflow infrastructure to ensure the permanent curation and accessibility of Boise State’s research data sets

    Boise State University identifies research and creative activity as a Core Theme of its institutional mission. This concept is clarified through several objectives which outline the importance of transferring knowledge for “societal, economic, and cultural benefits”. The university expects to produce work that has “substantial disciplinary impact and contributes to the overall reputation of the university,” so that, “community members can connect with and benefit from our researchers, artists, and students.” This core theme of scholarly contribution is further confirmed in the university’s Goals and Strategies which detail specific activities Boise State will undertake. For example in goals 3 and 5, Boise State establishes its commitment to effective research and creative efforts by developing key competencies, building necessary infrastructures, and encouraging external funding and philanthropic support. In consideration of these university goals, Albertsons Library is actively advocating for Boise State’s research and creative activities through its own Strategic Plan. In Library Strategic Objective 4, Albertsons Library has committed to identifying “critical areas of needed Research Support then build expertise, capacity and services to meet these needs.” Over the past several years, the library has pursued this goal through the development of research data management services detailed in the 2015-2016 Data Management Strategic Agenda - Final Report. These services have been built upon four principles: Research data is an asset Data management is an ongoing activity that happens throughout the life of the research project Researchers need “Point-of-Need” services The library strives to serve the whole university The following Data Management Strategic Agenda continues this work by outlining activities Albertsons Library’s Research Data Management Group will engage in over the next two years

Leadership takes place in a community and allows positive changes to occur. The LeaderShape Institute is a six day experience which explores and develops such leadership skills. In the program, students address questions such as, “Who am I?” and “What kind of leader am I?” LeaderShape is a program with the mission of transforming the world with individuals who lead with integrity and have a healthy disregard for the impossible.     How OBGYNs can assist in the prenatal care and delivery of western lowland gorillas

    Prenatal care and perinatal planning are paramount for successful delivery outcomes in human pregnancies and has been shown to be equally as important with non-human primates. The authors describe two pregnancies and deliveries of a 12-year-old primigravid western lowland gorilla, Macy. Macy’s first pregnancy resulted in a stillbirth and was complicated by breech positioning, while her second pregnancy resulted in a viable infant. This case report outlines the prenatal care Macy received in her pregnancies and highlights the importance of ultrasound for dating and fetal evaluation. The authors discuss options for breech positioning and considerations for cesarean section. This article showcases how obstetricians and veterinarians can implement human obstetrical recommendations with non-human primates to improve delivery outcomes. 

    The Mass of the Candidate Exoplanet Companion to HD136118 from Hubble Space Telescope Astrometry and High-Precision Radial Velocities

    We use Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor astrometry and high-cadence radial velocities for HD136118 from the HET with archival data from Lick to determine the complete set of orbital parameters for HD136118b. We find an orbital inclination for the candidate exoplanet of i_{b} = 163.1 +- 3.0 deg. This establishes the actual mass of the object, M_{b} = 42^{+11}_{-18} MJup, in contrast to the minimum mass determined from the radial velocity data only, M_{b}sin{i} ~ 12 MJup. Therefore, the low-mass companion to HD 136118 is now identified as a likely brown dwarf residing in the "brown dwarf desert".Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, 10 tables.     Smartphone accessibility: Understanding the lived experience of users with cervical spinal cord injuries

    Purpose: To explore accessibility challenges encountered by smartphone users with cervical spinal cord injuries (C1-C8).To investigate the suitability of current technology and make recommendations to help future technology meet user needs. Methods: The study uses a mixed-method approach combining an inductive thematic analysis of nine semi-structured interviews with a quantitative analysis of thirty-nine questionnaires. Results: The analysis generated four themes: ’the drive for independence and self-efficacy’; ’trying to make it work’; ’getting the right technology for me’; ’using the phone as and when I want to’. These themes highlighted how unresolved access issues and situational barriers limited independence and created unwanted privacy compromises for effective communication. There was a lack of information or support on available smartphone accessibility features and assistive technology (AT). Smartphone AT was regarded as overpriced, poorly designed and lacking the voices of people with disabilities. Conclusions: The smartphone’s potential to improve quality of life, participation, and well-being is limited by accessibility challenges hindering independent and private smartphone use. Future design work should focus on improving accessibility, investigating reasons for AT’s poor quality and high cost, and removing barriers to end-user inclusion. To enhance user awareness of available technology, stakeholders should build and maintain an open platform to act as an information source for peer and professional support on assistive technology

    Test of an interprofessional collaborative practice model to improve obesity-related health outcomes in Michigan

    The purpose of the study was to test the effectiveness of an interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) education program on clinicians\u27 and students\u27 knowledge and attitudes toward IPCP and to determine the effectiveness of an IPCP weight loss program in two nurse-managed centers. The study team used the Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research Center (MIPERC) collaborative practice education program that consists of online learning modules followed by daily huddles and collaborative care planning. The obesity intervention program was implemented by faculty and staff practitioners and students in two clinics with very different patient populations (community residents and college students). Staff/faculty practitioners and students demonstrated statistically significant knowledge gains as a result of online learning modules (Introduction to IPE p \u3c .05; Motivational Interviewing p \u3c .001; Safety Behaviors p \u3c .001; Team Dynamics p \u3c .001). Small, but not statistically significant changes in attitudes toward IPCP were seen with both groups. At program completion, enrolled patients showed statistical significant (p \u3c .001) weight losses and decreases in body mass indices. Other health outcomes showed no significant changes (blood pressure, prevalence of smoking, exercise frequency or duration p \u3e .05). The study demonstrated the potential of an IPCP program to affect weight loss in two populations
