A Note On 3D N=2 Dualities: Real Mass Flow And Partition Function
We study two well-known classes of dualities in three dimensional N=2
supersymmetric field theories. In the first class there are non trivial
interactions involving monopole operators while in the second class the dual
gauge theories have Chern-Simons terms in the action. An RG flows connecting
the first dual pair to the second one has been studied in the past and tested
on the partition function on the squashed three sphere. Recently an opposite RG
flow connecting the second dual pair to the first one has been studied in the
case of unitary gauge groups. In this paper we study this flow on the partition
function on the squashed three sphere. We verify that the equality between the
partition functions of the original dual models is preserved in the IR, where
the other dual pair is reached. We generalize the analysis to the case of
symplectic and of orthogonal groups.Comment: 25 page
4d/3d reduction of s-confining theories: the role of the "exotic" D instantons
In the reduction of 4d dualities to 3d there are non-perturbative effects
arising from monopoles acting as instantons. This mechanism has been reproduced
in string theory by engineering the theories in a IIA brane setup. Nevertheless
there are limiting cases of the 4d dualities where the dual theories are
actually confined phases of the UV gauge theories. In these cases the monopoles
are absent and the mechanism of reduction of the 4d duality has to be modified.
In this paper we investigate such modification in the brane setup. The main
observation behind our analysis is that in the 4d case the superpotential of
the confined theories can been obtained also as the "exotic" contribution of a
D0 brane, a stringy instanton. When considering these configurations we
reproduce the field theory results in the brane setup. We study both the
unitary and the symplectic case. As a further check we study the reduction of
the 4d superconformal index to the 3d partition function for these theories.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, references adde
Additional Light Waves in Hydrodynamics and Holography
We study the phenomenon of additional light waves (ALWs), observed in crystal
optics: two or more electromagnetic waves with the same polarization, but
different refractive index, propagate simultaneously in a isotropic medium. We
show that ALWs are common in relativistic hydrodynamics, and in particular in
strongly coupled systems that admit a dual gravitational description, where the
ALWs are dual to quasi normal modes in the AdS gravity. We study both the
transverse and the longitudinal light wave propagation. In the longitudinal
channel we find a transition between regimes with different number of excitonic
resonances which resembles the transition to standard optics observed in
crystals.Comment: 20 pages, 17 figure
Refined Checks and Exact Dualities in Three Dimensions
We discuss and provide nontrivial evidence for a large class of dualities in
three-dimensional field theories with different gauge groups. We match the full
partition functions of the dual phases for any value of the couplings to
underpin our proposals. We focus on two classes of models. The first class,
motivated by the AdS/CFT conjecture, consists of necklace U(N) quiver gauge
theories with non chiral matter fields. We also consider orientifold
projections and establish dualities among necklace quivers with alternating
orthogonal and symplectic groups. The second class consists of theories with
tensor matter fields with free theory duals. In most of these cases the
R-symmetry mixes with IR accidental symmetries and we develop the prescription
to include their contribution into the partition function and the extremization
problem accordingly.Comment: 38 pages, 3 figure, using jheppu
More on Meta-Stable Brane Configuration
We describe the intersecting brane configuration of type IIA string theory
corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua in four dimensional
N=1 supersymmetric SU(N_c) gauge theory with an antisymmetric flavor, a
conjugate symmetric flavor, eight fundamental flavors, m_f fundamental flavors
and m_f antifundamental flavors. This is done by analyzing the N=1
supersymmetric SU(2m_f-N_c+4) magnetic gauge theory with dual matters and the
corresponding dual superpotential.Comment: 20 pp, 3 figures; Pages 11,12, and 14 improved; to appear in CQ
Two Loop R-Symmetry Breaking
We analyze two loop quantum corrections for pseudomoduli in O'Raifeartaigh
like models. We argue that R-symmetry can be spontaneously broken at two loop
in non supersymmetric vacua. We provide a basic example with this property. We
discuss on phenomenological applications.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, JHEP3.cls, reference adde
Operator Counting and Eigenvalue Distributions for 3D Supersymmetric Gauge Theories
We give further support for our conjecture relating eigenvalue distributions
of the Kapustin-Willett-Yaakov matrix model in the large N limit to numbers of
operators in the chiral ring of the corresponding supersymmetric
three-dimensional gauge theory. We show that the relation holds for
non-critical R-charges and for examples with {\mathcal N}=2 instead of
{\mathcal N}=3 supersymmetry where the bifundamental matter fields are
nonchiral. We prove that, for non-critical R-charges, the conjecture is
equivalent to a relation between the free energy of the gauge theory on a three
sphere and the volume of a Sasaki manifold that is part of the moduli space of
the gauge theory. We also investigate the consequences of our conjecture for
chiral theories where the matrix model is not well understood.Comment: 27 pages + appendices, 5 figure
Meta-Stable Brane Configurations by Higher Order Polynomial Superpotential
We construct the type IIA nonsupersymmetric meta-stable brane configuration
consisting of (2k+1) NS5-branes and D4-branes where the electric gauge theory
superpotential has an order (2k+2) polynomial for the bifundamentals. We find a
rich pattern of nonsupersymmetric meta-stable states as well as the
supersymmetric stable ones. By adding the orientifold 4-plane to this brane
configuration, we also describe the intersecting brane configuration of type
IIA string theory corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of
corresponding gauge theory.Comment: 27pp, 8 figures; some footnotes added; to appear in IJMP
The Large N Limit of Toric Chern-Simons Matter Theories and Their Duals
We compute the large N limit of the localized three dimensional free energy
of various field theories with known proposed AdS duals. We show that
vector-like theories agree with the expected supergravity results, and with the
conjectured F-theorem. We also check that the large N free energy is preserved
by the three dimensional Seiberg duality for general classes of vector like
theories. Then we analyze the behavior of the free energy of chiral-like
theories by applying a new proposal. The proposal is based on the restoration
of a discrete symmetry on the free energy before the extremization. We apply
this procedure at strong coupling in some examples and we discuss the results.
We conclude the paper by proposing an alternative geometrical expression for
the free energy.Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures, using jheppub.sty, references adde
