    Business IT Alignment through the Lens of Complexity Science

    Business IT alignment has been a top concern for academics and corporate managers for over 30 years. Despite a rich literature, it is still far from been an achieved objective in companies. Leveraging on the similarities between Information and Complex Systems, researchers have recently adopted a new perspective to study Information Systems and their alignment with business. The present study is based on an extensive literature review that spans three domains of research: Information Systems, Complexity Science, and Organization Science. The paper proposes to contribute to the study and implementation of alignment by presenting a classification framework for the different alignment approaches exploiting methods derived from Complexity Science. Four types of approaches to alignment are identified and for each of them the potential contribution to alignment dimensions is discussed

    A framework for business IT alignment in turbulent environments

    The paper proposes a framework for organizations’ business IT alignment that merges traditional IT assessment parameters, such as application portfolio coverage and integration, with technological and architectural parameters providing flexibility to the company’s Information System. The framework proves to be a practical decisional instrument, overcoming theoretical approaches which lack applicability to decision processes, especially in turbulent environments, where business needs may vary quickly and the adaptation capability of the Information System is a key competitive factor

The present study is based on a multi-case study analysis carried out in two companies that implemented alignment processes. We conceptualise alignment as a co-evolution process and derive four mechanisms and three types of parameters and explain their role in alignment implementation. The contribution is theoretical, since we analyse and describe mechanisms and factors that govern alignment, and for the practitioners, since knowledge of these mechanisms is precondition for an effective alignment implementation

    Business-IT alignment as a coevolution process: An empirical study

    In this paper, we provide a detailed insight into the complex coevolution dynamics that shape the alignment process by analyzing how different mechanisms and factors are mutually related in complex networks of feedback loops. We combine insights from the literature on alignment as a (coevolution) process with literature on alignment as a state to identify the different components of the organization's socio-technical system that influence alignment, the relationships between these components, and the role that different factors play. In our empirical analysis (based multiple case studies) we then focus on the actual interplay between relevant factors. Using a causal loop diagramming approach - based on system dynamics – we analyze how these factors mutually influence each other through various feedback loops and thus shape the alignment process. We extend previous literature on the alignment process by identifying the way that the complex interplay between different factors shapes this process. By identifying the feedback loops between relevant factors, we also provide more insight into the complex bottom-up and top-down dynamics that shape the process, and that provide explanations for why this process is characterized by transitions between alignment and misalignment. For practice, our paper provides a deeper understanding of the alignment process, which is a precondition for improving alignment practices in organisations

    A Semantic-Rich Approach to IoT Using the Generalized World Entities Paradigm

    In this chapter, we present an overview of our proposed Generalized World Entities (GWEs) paradigm, to be used to add a semantic/conceptual dimension to IoT/WoT (Internet of Things/Web of Things) procedures. GWEs offer a unified way to model seamlessly, at the conceptual level, both the digital counterparts of elementary entities, such as physical objects, humans, robots and low-level events, and the semantic representations of higher levels of abstraction. These higher levels correspond to structured situations/behaviors implying mutual relationships among simpler entities. The GWEs approach is both a theoretical and a practical framework that can give a significant contribution to solve some important IoT/WoT problems, such as interoperability and uniform IoT controls. Thanks to a unique ontology-based representation language, the chapter shows the possibility of bridging the semantic gap between the recognition of entities at the sensor level and their representation at the conceptual level

    none103siHERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) Technological and Scientific pathfinder is a space borne mission based on a LEO constellation of nano-satellites. The 3U CubeSat buses host new miniaturized detectors to probe the temporal emission of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). Fast transient localization, in a field of view of several steradians and with arcmin-level accuracy, is gained by comparing time delays among the same event detection epochs occurred on at least 3 nano-satellites. With a launch date in 2022, HERMES transient monitoring represents a keystone capability to complement the next generation of gravitational wave experiments.
