Temperature dependent thermal conductivity of magnetocaloric materials: impact assessment on the performance of active magnetic regenerative refrigerators

Due to the dynamic nature of the active magnetic regenerative mechanism in magnetocaloric refrigeration, the thermal conductivity of the refrigerant is a critical parameter. Experimental studies have shown how the thermal conductivity of high-performance magnetic refrigerants can drastically change around their Curie temperatures (TC). However, this fact has been largely ignored in the numerical simulation of devices, raising the need to assess the impact of this approximation, particularly when the simulations are aimed at optimizing or dimensioning a particular device geometry. In this paper we show how, by employing a unidimensional numerical model of a magnetic refrigerator with parallel plates, two different temperature dependent thermal conductivity scenarios of the refrigerant affect the resulting temperature span and cooling power. By considering a gadolinium-like material as the refrigerant with thermal conductivities varying 50% near its TC, a change of the resulting device temperature span of  ∼15% is reached. The cooling power is also affected, changing also  ∼15% when the considered systems are at half their respective maximum temperature span. Our results are also discussed in terms of other geometries where the impact of these effects can be even larger, namely in cases where the axial thermal conduction in the AMR element is not negligible, or the time-scale of longitudinal thermal processes has a larger impact on the optimum operating frequency.publishe

Synchronous Endometrioid Endometrial and Ovarian Cancer in a 34-Year-Old Woman

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynaecological malignancy in developed countries. Synchronous endometrioid endometrial and ovarian cancer in patients appears with different clinical characteristics compared to patients with isolated endometrial cancer. A 34-year-old woman with lower abdominal pain of 1 year duration presented at the emergency department. On gynaecological examination, she had a left and midline pelvic mass. A transvaginal ultrasound showed it to be a complex hypervascularised mass, with cystic and solid components on left adnexal region. Ectopic pregnancy and pelvic inflammatory disease were excluded. Serum levels of tumour marker CA125 and ROMA were increased. The MR showed a complex mass, suggestive of primary fallopian tube or ovarian tumour. The patient underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection and subcolonic omentectomy. Monitorização da Adesão à Terapêutica Médica do Glaucoma

Introdução: A adesão à terapêutica antiglaucomatosa é fundamental na redução e controlo da pressão intra-ocular. O glaucoma, por ser uma doença crónica e inicialmente assintomática, tem um risco aumentado de não cumprimento terapêutico. Este estudo tem como objectivo a avaliação da adesão à terapêutica médica do glaucoma (estrita e relativa), através da utilização de um dispositivo de registo electrónico (DRE). Material e Métodos: Estudo prospectivo que incluiu 21 doentes, com glaucoma ou hipertensão ocular. Um e três meses após a visita inicial, procedeu-se ao preenchimento de um questionário relativo à compliance e analisaram-se os dados registados no DRE. Resultados: A idade média dos doentes era 62,4 anos (± 19,2), 52% do sexo masculino e 48% do sexo feminino. A compliance média relativa foi de 77,9% no primeiro mês e de 78,7% no final do terceiro mês. A compliance média estrita foi de 56,7% e de 53.3% no final do primeiro e terceiro mês, respectivamente. A maioria dos doentes sentiu facilidade (80,9%) e deseja continuar (85,7%) a utilização do mesmo. Conclusão: A adesão à terapêutica médica do glaucoma, factor importante no controlo desta patologia, pode ser avaliada de forma simples e objectiva através da utilização de um dispositivo de registo electrónico
