    Effects of trinexapac-ethyl on ornamental grass species

    Studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of trinexapac-ethyl (TE) on height reduction, tillering, chlorophyll content, color, flowering, and root development of three ornamental grasses: Calamagrostis ×acutiflora \u27Karl Foerster\u27, Miscanthus sinensis \u27Variegatus\u27, and Pennisetum ×advena \u27Rubrum\u27. Two applications of TE reduced height in all grasses and improved chlorophyll content in C. \u27Karl Foerster\u27 while delaying flowering in M. \u27Variegatus\u27 and P. \u27Rubrum\u27. Tillering was slightly increased in M. \u27Variegatus\u27 with two TE applications. Shoot dry weight (SDW) and root dry weight (RDW) were reduced in C. \u27Karl Foerster\u27, SDW was reduced in P. \u27Rubrum\u27 and SDW and RDW were unaffected by applications of TE in M. \u27Variegatus\u27. TE is effective for growth control in ornamental grass production systems; however, the results are species specific and should be tested further before widespread use on other ornamental grass species

    Two-dimensional echocardiographic diagnosis of pulmonary artery sling in infancy

    The vascular anomaly in which the left pulmonary artery arises from the right pulmonary artery and passes posteriorly and leftward between the trachea and the esophagus is termed a pulmonary artery sling. Two-dimensional echocardiograms were performed in five infants with this anomaly and successfully identified it in four, including one patient with truncus arteriosus communis.The subxiphoid long-axis sweep was useful in identifying the origin and initial course of the left pulmonary artery, and short-axis subxiphoid views showed both its origin from the right pulmonary artery and its initial posterior course. Angulation toward the cardiac apex displayed the right pulmonary artery in cross section anteriorly and the left pulmonary artery in cross section posteriorly. A transducer orientation midway between the subxiphoid long- and short-axis positions was helpful in distinguishing a large right upper lobe branch of the right pulmonary artery from a pulmonary artery sling. The precordial short-axis plane displayed the origin and initial posterior and leftward course of the left pulmonary artery, while the bifurcation of the main pulmonary artery, usually easily seen in this view, could not be demonstrated.Two-dimensional echocardiography offers a rapid, noninvasive diagnosis of pulmonary artery sling in infants

    Rapid generation of fully relativistic extreme-mass-ratio-inspiral waveform templates for LISA data analysis

    The future space mission LISA will observe a wealth of gravitational-wave sources at millihertz frequencies. Of these, the extreme-mass-ratio inspirals of compact objects into massive black holes are the only sources that combine the challenges of strong-field complexity with that of long-lived signals. Such signals are found and characterized by comparing them against a large number of accurate waveform templates during data analysis, but the rapid generation of such templates is hindered by computing the 103\sim10^3-10510^5 harmonic modes in a fully relativistic waveform. We use order-reduction and deep-learning techniques to derive a global fit for these modes, and implement it in a complete waveform framework with hardware acceleration. Our high-fidelity waveforms can be generated in under 1s1\,\mathrm{s}, and achieve a mismatch of 5×104\lesssim 5\times 10^{-4} against reference waveforms that take 104\gtrsim 10^4 times longer. This marks the first time that analysis-length waveforms with full harmonic content can be produced on timescales useful for direct implementation in LISA analysis algorithms.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Adiabatic waveforms for extreme mass-ratio inspirals via multivoice decomposition in time and frequency

    We compute adiabatic waveforms for extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) by "stitching" together a long inspiral waveform from a sequence of waveform snapshots, each of which corresponds to a particular geodesic orbit. We show that the complicated total waveform can be regarded as a sum of "voices." Each voice evolves in a simple way on long timescales, a property which can be exploited to efficiently produce waveform models that faithfully encode the properties of EMRI systems. We look at examples for a range of different orbital geometries: spherical orbits, equatorial eccentric orbits, and one example of generic (inclined and eccentric) orbits. To our knowledge, this is the first calculation of a generic EMRI waveform that uses strong-field radiation reaction. We examine waveforms in both the time and frequency domains. Although EMRIs evolve slowly enough that the stationary phase approximation (SPA) to the Fourier transform is valid, the SPA calculation must be done to higher order for some voices, since their instantaneous frequency can change from chirping forward (f˙>0\dot f > 0) to chirping backward (f˙<0\dot f < 0). The approach we develop can eventually be extended to more complete EMRI waveform models, for example to include effects neglected by the adiabatic approximation such as the conservative self force and spin-curvature coupling.Comment: 31 pages, 17 figures.     FastEMRIWaveforms: New tools for millihertz gravitational-wave data analysis

    We present the FastEMRIWaveforms (FEW) package, a collection of tools to build and analyze extreme mass ratio inspiral (EMRI) waveforms. Here, we expand on the Physical Review Letter that introduced the first fast and accurate fully-relativistic EMRI waveform template model. We discuss the construction of the overall framework; constituent modules; and the general methods used to accelerate EMRI waveforms. Because the fully relativistic FEW model waveforms are for now limited to eccentric orbits in the Schwarzschild spacetime, we also introduce an improved Augmented Analytic Kludge (AAK) model that describes generic Kerr inspirals. Both waveform models can be accelerated using graphics processing unit (GPU) hardware. With the GPU-accelerated waveforms in hand, a variety of studies are performed including an analysis of EMRI mode content, template mismatch, and fully Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo-based EMRI parameter estimation. We find relativistic EMRI waveform templates can be generated with fewer harmonic modes (10100\sim10-100) without biasing signal extraction. However, we show for the first time that extraction of a relativistic injection with semi-relativistic amplitudes can lead to strong bias and anomalous structure in the posterior distribution for certain regions of parameter space.Comment: 26 pages, 12 Figures, FastEMRIWaveforms Package: bhptoolkit.org/FastEMRIWaveforms

    Maxillofacial Materials Reinforced with Various Concentrations of Polyhedral Silsesquioxanes

    This study evaluates two mechanical properties, tensile strength and tear strength, of maxillofacial materials reinforced with functional polyhedral silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles at 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 5.0% (mass/mass) loading. Adding POSS was found to significantly affect the overall tensile strength and extensibility of the maxillofacial material. Significant differences were found in mean peak load (p = .050) and extension before failure (p = .050), respectively, between concentrations of 0% and 5%. For tear resistance, a significant difference was observed in mean load (p = .002) between concentrations of 1% and 5%. Significant differences were also observed in extension before failure between concentrations of 0% and 1% (p = .002) and between 0% and 2% (p = .002). Increased resistance to tensile or shearing stresses could lead to greater clinical longevity. The following results suggest that functional nanoparticles can be used to improve properties without compromising clinical handling

This project was to design a wind turbine electricity generation system and gain an understanding of the engineering involved in producing electricity from the wind. Having observed the wind patterns on the campus of Utah State University, it was decided to obtain both a horizontal axis (HAWT) and a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) and mount them on the roof of the USU Dean F. Peterson, Jr. Engineering Laboratory Building. The outputs of both turbines were measured and compared. For the low wind conditions of Logan, Utah, the HAWT was found to be the most effective

    Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a risk factor for thiopurine hepatotoxicity in Crohn\u27s disease

    BACKGROUND: Patients with Crohn\u27s disease (CD) are predisposed to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). CD management often includes thiopurines which can promote hepatotoxicity. We aimed to identify the role of NAFLD on the risk of developing liver injury from thiopurines in CD. METHODS: In this prospective cohort analysis, CD patients at a single center were recruited 6/2017-5/2018. Patients with alternative liver diseases were excluded. The primary outcome was time to elevation of liver enzymes. Patients underwent MRI with assessment of proton density fat fraction (PDFF) on enrollment, where NAFLD was defined as PDFF \u3e5.5%. Statistical analysis was performed using a Cox-proportional hazards model. RESULTS: Of the 311 CD patients studied, 116 (37%) were treated with thiopurines, 54 (47%) of which were found to have NAFLD. At follow-up, there were 44 total cases of elevated liver enzymes in those treated with thiopurines. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that NAFLD was a predictor of elevated liver enzymes in patients with CD treated with thiopurines (HR 3.0, 95% CI 1.2-7.3, CONCLUSIONS: NAFLD at baseline is a risk factor for thiopurine-induced hepatotoxicity in patients with CD. The degree of liver fat positively correlated with the degree of ALT elevation. These data suggest that evaluation for hepatic steatosis be considered in patients with liver enzyme elevations with thiopurine therapy
