Fisher matrix forecasts for astrophysical tests of the stability of the fine-structure constant
We use Fisher Matrix analysis techniques to forecast the cosmological impact
of astrophysical tests of the stability of the fine-structure constant to be
carried out by the forthcoming ESPRESSO spectrograph at the VLT (due for
commissioning in late 2017), as well by the planned high-resolution
spectrograph (currently in Phase A) for the European Extremely Large Telescope.
Assuming a fiducial model without variations, we show that ESPRESSO
can improve current bounds on the E\"{o}tv\"{o}s parameter---which quantifies
Weak Equivalence Principle violations---by up to two orders of magnitude,
leading to stronger bounds than those expected from the ongoing tests with the
MICROSCOPE satellite, while constraints from the E-ELT should be competitive
with those of the proposed STEP satellite. Should an variation be
detected, these measurements will further constrain cosmological parameters,
being particularly sensitive to the dynamics of dark energy.Comment: Phys. Lett. B (in press
Exact solution for the energy density inside a one-dimensional non-static cavity with an arbitrary initial field state
We study the exact solution for the energy density of a real massless scalar
field in a two-dimensional spacetime, inside a non-static cavity with an
arbitrary initial field state, taking into account the Neumann and Dirichlet
boundary conditions. This work generalizes the exact solution proposed by Cole
and Schieve in the context of the Dirichlet boundary condition and vacuum as
the initial state. We investigate diagonal states, examining the vacuum and
thermal field as particular cases. We also study non-diagonal initial field
states, taking as examples the coherent and Schrodinger cat states.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

NGC 2362: a Template for Early Stellar Evolution
We present UBVRI photometry for the young open cluster NGC 2362. From
analysis of the appropriate color-color and color-magnitude diagrams we derive
the fundamental parameters of the NGC 2362 cluster to be: age = 5 (+1-2) Myr,
distance = 1480 pc, E(B-V)=0.10 mag. The cluster age was independently
determined for both high mass (2.1 - 36Msun) and low mass (0.7 - 1.2Msun) stars
with excellent agreement between the ages derived using post-main sequence and
pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks for the high and low mass stars
respectively. Analysis of this cluster's color-magnitude diagram reveals a well
defined pre-main sequence (covering DeltaV ~ 9 magnitudes in V and extending
from early A stars to near the hydrogen burning limit) which makes this cluster
an ideal laboratory for pre-main sequence evolution studies.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to be published in ApJ
Amplitude analysis of four-body decays using a massively-parallel fitting framework
The GooFit Framework is designed to perform maximum-likelihood fits for
arbitrary functions on various parallel back ends, for example a GPU. We
present an extension to GooFit which adds the functionality to perform
time-dependent amplitude analyses of pseudoscalar mesons decaying into four
pseudoscalar final states. Benchmarks of this functionality show a significant
performance increase when utilizing a GPU compared to a CPU. Furthermore, this
extension is employed to study the sensitivity on the mixing
parameters and in a time-dependent amplitude analysis of the decay . Studying a sample of 50 000 events and setting
the central values to the world average of and , the statistical sensitivities of and are determined

The nature of the dense core population in the Pipe Nebula: A survey of NH3, CCS, and HC5N molecular line emission
Recent extinction studies of the Pipe Nebula (d=130 pc) reveal many cores
spanning a range in mass from 0.2 to 20.4 Msun. These dense cores were
identified via their high extinction and comprise a starless population in a
very early stage of development. Here we present a survey of NH3 (1,1), NH3
(2,2), CCS (2_1,1_0), and HC5N (9,8) emission toward 46 of these cores. An
atlas of the 2MASS extinction maps is also presented. In total, we detect 63%
of the cores in NH3 (1,1) 22% in NH3 (2,2), 28% in CCS, and 9% in HC5N
emission. We find the cores are associated with dense gas (~10^4 cm-3) with 9.5
< T_k < 17 K. Compared to C18O, we find the NH3 linewidths are systematically
narrower, implying that the NH3 is tracing the dense component of the gas and
that these cores are relatively quiescent. We find no correlation between core
linewidth and size. The derived properties of the Pipe cores are similar to
cores within other low-mass star-forming regions: the only differences are that
the Pipe cores have weaker NH3 emision and most show no current star formation
as evidenced by the lack of embedded infrared sources. Such weak NH3 emission
could arise due to low column densities and abundances or reduced excitation
due to relatively low core volume densities. Either alternative implies that
the cores are relatively young. Thus, the Pipe cores represent an excellent
sample of dense cores in which to study the initial conditions for star
formation and the earliest stages of core formation and evolution.Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures (excluding the appendix). For the complete
