Tally’s Corner fut publié pour la première fois aux États-Unis en 1967. Cette publication avait lieu dans un contexte spécifique. La société américaine traversait une période intense d’émeutes urbaines. Celles-ci avaient vu le jour en 1964 et à la fin des années 1960 avaient touché 154 grandes villes américaines. Ces émeutes étaient principalement l’œuvre de jeunes Noirs américains. Ceux-ci vivaient regroupés dans les logements insalubres et à forte densité situés au centre des grandes villes..

Abstract This paper shows how conducting the ethnographic study of a theater hall and company can help define theater activity. Once the aesthetic of the social organization is set apart from the proper division of labor, theater appears as a collective activity which requires the cooperation of eight groups playing different social roles. The cooperation modes rest on a meshing of direct or indirect services for the actors who carry out the core task of performing. This specific organization of work around a central group is what makes the activity artistic. Simultaneously, the service relation offers the possibility for some categories to bring their relationship with actors closer to a state of symmetry and sometimes reverse asymmetry. As a status enhancing opportunity, service relationship for actors also directly or indirectly provide the grounds for participant commitment and thus guarantee long-lasting operation for the theatrical organization

Etude menée et rédigée entre 1999 et 2004Ethnographic study of the Bouffes du Nord theatre (1975-2005) based on the analysis of the different occupational groups involved in the theatre operations and focusing on cooperation modes in drama work. The research was conducted by means of direct observation and interviews within an historical frame. Focusing on its architecture, localization, operating policy, conventions, and role in the French theatre community tradition the aesthetics of the place is drawn out. Group definitions rely on their role in the organization. Group analysis is based on the individuals' socio-demographic data, careers and mobility. The description of the tasks carried out, of the task assignment modes, the conflicts and their resolution enables to sketch the division of labor organized in the theatre. Finally, by resorting to the mechanisms of "game" and "side bets" the moving forces to commitment are analyzed and their ties to status improvement enhanced.Ethnographie du Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord (1975-2005) construite autour des six différents groupes professionnels participant à son fonctionnement: les cadres, le personnel de ligne arrière, les acteurs, le personnel de renfort, le personnel de première ligne et le public. Recherche menée par observation directe, entretiens et mise en perspective historique. À partir de son architecture, de son implantation, de sa politique d'exploitation, des conventions utilisées et de sa place dans la tradition théâtrale française, l'esthétique du lieu est dégagée. Chaque groupe professionnel est ensuite défini en regard de son rôle dans l'organisation et analysé au travers des données sociodémographiques, des carrières et de la mobilité des individus qui le composent. La description des tâches et l'analyse de la division du travail met l'accent sur les modalités de répartition des tâches, l'émergence et la résolution des conflits ainsi que la culture du lieu. L'appréhension des ressorts de l'implication met au jour les schèmes du " jeu " et des " enjeux secondaires " ainsi que la centralité de la notion de valorisation de statut dans le maintien au sein de l'organisation

Tally's Corner est devenu un texte-clé dans l'analyse et la compréhension des phénomènes urbains liés à la pauvreté. Alors que les révoltes urbaines s'intensifient et que les habitants des grandes villes du Nord des États-Unis, des populations immigrées, connaissent un fort taux de chômage, une situation sanitaire difficile et la désagrégation de leur cellule familiale, Elliot Liebow procède au compte rendu détaillé des actes ordinaires de la fraction masculine la plus pauvre de la population noire d'une de ces grande villes. En suivant au jour le jour quelques-uns des hommes qui traînent régulièrement, apparemment sans rien faire, au coin d'une rue, l'auteur, Elliot Liebow, montre comment ces hommes s'organisent afin de surmonter les difficultés sans fin auxquelles ils sont confrontés, comment ils fondent des familles, tentent de subvenir à leurs besoins et de conserver leur dignité.
