Capacity Choice, Foreign Trade and Exchange Rates
We investigate the effects of exchange rate movements on investment decisions of firms in an oligopolistic market. In a two-country-world model, we focus on the capacity investment decisions of small (small initial capacity and high marginal cost) and large (large initial capacity and low marginal cost) domestic firms. Both type of firms use foreign inputs in production and sell their output in the foreign market, thus they are prone to changes in exchange rate from both cost and demand side. Results show that devaluations alter the composition of production and the relative share of small and inefficient firms at the expense of large and efficient firms in the economy. The investment response to exchange rates is more pronounced in more competitive markets.Capacity investment, exchange rates, market structure.
Structural phase transitions in epitaxial perovskite films
Three different film systems have been systematically investigated to
understand the effects of strain and substrate constraint on the phase
transitions of perovskite films. In SrTiO films, the phase transition
temperature T was determined by monitoring the superlattice peaks
associated with rotations of TiO octahedra. It is found that T depends
on both SrTiO film thickness and SrRuO buffer layer thickness. However,
lattice parameter measurements showed no sign of the phase transitions,
indicating that the tetragonality of the SrTiO unit cells was no longer a
good order parameter. This signals a change in the nature of this phase
transition, the internal degree of freedom is decoupled from the external
degree of freedom. The phase transitions occur even without lattice relaxation
through domain formation. In NdNiO thin films, it is found that the
in-plane lattice parameters were clamped by the substrate, while out-of-plane
lattice constant varied to accommodate the volume change across the phase
transition. This shows that substrate constraint is an important parameter for
epitaxial film systems, and is responsible for the suppression of external
structural change in SrTiO and NdNiO films. However, in SrRuO films
we observed domain formation at elevated temperature through x-ray reciprocal
space mapping. This indicated that internal strain energy within films also
played an important role, and may dominate in some film systems. The final
strain states within epitaxial films were the result of competition between
multiple mechanisms and may not be described by a single parameter.Comment: REVTeX4, 14 figure
Makarnalık buğdayda mutasyon ıslahı ile bazı kantitatif karakterlerin geliştirilmesi
Namık Kemal Üniversitesi, Ziraat Fakültesi, Tarla Bitkileri Bölümünde yürütülen bu araştırmada, iki makarnalık buğday çeşidine uygulanan 6 farklı gamma ışını dozunun M1 ve M2 generasyonlarında bitki gelişimi üzerine etkisi araştırılmıştır. M2 generasyonunda incelenen 7 karakter yönünden mutant ve kontrol genotipler karşılaştırıldığında, birçok özellik bakımından istenen mutant tipler elde edilmiştir. Özellikle 200 gray doz uygulamasından sonra seçilen mutant genotipler arasında bitki boyu yönünden önemli oranda kısalma gösteren genotipler elde edilmiştir. Bitki verimi, ana saptaki başakta tane ağırlığı, başakta tane sayısı, hasat indeksi, başak uzunluğu yönünden 300 gray doz uygulamalarında istenen özellikleri taşıyan genotipler ortaya çıkmıştır. Ayrıca, mutagen uygulamasının bitkide kardeş sayısını artırdığı belirlenmiştir. Kontrol ve seçilen mutant genotiplerde SDS-PAGE yöntemiyle elde edilen protein bandları yönünden özellikle 300-500 gray dozlarında farklılıklar gözlenmişti
Operator theory and function theory in Drury-Arveson space and its quotients
The Drury-Arveson space , also known as symmetric Fock space or the
-shift space, is a Hilbert function space that has a natural -tuple of
operators acting on it, which gives it the structure of a Hilbert module. This
survey aims to introduce the Drury-Arveson space, to give a panoramic view of
the main operator theoretic and function theoretic aspects of this space, and
to describe the universal role that it plays in multivariable operator theory
and in Pick interpolation theory.Comment: Final version (to appear in Handbook of Operator Theory); 42 page
Tendon Is Covered by a Basement Membrane Epithelium That Is Required for Cell Retention and the Prevention of Adhesion Formation
The ability of tendons to glide smoothly during muscle contraction is impaired after injury by fibrous adhesions that form between the damaged tendon surface and surrounding tissues. To understand how adhesions form we incubated excised tendons in fibrin gels (to mimic the homeostatic environment at the injury site) and assessed cell migration. We noticed cells exiting the tendon from only the cut ends. Furthermore, treatment of the tendon with trypsin resulted in cell extravagation from the shaft of the tendons. Electron microscopy and immunolocalisation studies showed that the tendons are covered by a novel cell layer in which a collagen type IV/laminin basement membrane (BM) overlies a keratinised epithelium. PCR and western blot analyses confirmed the expression of laminin β1 in surface cells, only. To evaluate the cell retentive properties of the BM in vivo we examined the tendons of the Col4a1+/Svc mouse that is heterozygous for a G-to-A transition in the Col4a1 gene that produces a G1064D substitution in the α1(IV) chain of collagen IV. The flexor tendons had a discontinuous BM, developed fibrous adhesions with overlying tissues, and were acellular at sites of adhesion formation. In further experiments, tenotomy of wild-type mice resulted in expression of laminin throughout the adhesion. In conclusion, we show the existence of a novel tendon BM-epithelium that is required to prevent adhesion formation. The Col4a1+/Svc mouse is an effective animal model for studying adhesion formation because of the presence of a structurally-defective collagen type IV-containing BM

Technology Transfer in the Non-Traded Sector as a Means to Combat Global Warming
The paper considers a situation where two countries - the North and the South - use a non-traded polluting input to produce the goods for final consumption. The North is more efficient in both, production and abatement processes. The study compares the effects of the transfer of abatement technology by the North to the South under autarky with the free trade situation, assuming that the North pre-commits to an international protocol to keep the global pollution under a fixed level. The conditions under which either full or partial technology is transferred in autarky are determined. It is shown that under free trade no such transfer is possible. With trade even though the North wants a complete transfer of technology, the South refuses it
