A Case Study of Semiotic Distinctiveness in Brand Names

Brand names constitute a form of value for commercial products, because they suppose a savings of search costs for the consumer. The law, as a consequence, has the obligation to protect brand names. But the number of attractive brand names is not infinite and sometimes companies seek brand names which are reminiscent of others. In this article a conflict between two companies for the distinctiveness of two brand names is addressed: one Spanish company used the English common noun doughnut for a product similar to the American pastry, while the other company had already registered donut as a brand name, in addition to its variants. This second company sued the first on the grounds that the names were not distinctive. Teoría Lingüística y Teoría de la Literatura: convergencias

El propósito de este artículo es mostrar que la teoría lingüística, en particular la teoría funcional-cognitivista,comparte con la teoría de la literatura, tal como se expone en el libro de Antonio García Berrio y Teresa Hernández Fernández, Crítica Literaria, un conjunto significativo de temas científicos como los universales, las representaciones mentales, la iconicidad, el espacio, la comunicación y la empatía. Estos temas comunes a una y otra teoría se debe a que ambas están basadas en la cognición humana.This paper aims at showing that linguistic theory, especially functional and cognitive linguistic theories, shares a significant set of scientific topics such as universals, mental representations, iconicity, space, human communication and empathy, with the theory of literature, as developed by Antonio García Berrio and Teresa Hernández Fernández in their work Crítica Literaria. This is due to the fact that both theories are grounded in human cognition

En este artículo exploramos cómo se describe una lengua concreta, como es el catalán moderno actual, empleando las teorías lingüísticas modernas como el Estructuralismo, el Generativismo, y el Funcionalismo. Este empleo de las tres grandes corrientes de la lingüística del siglo XX muestra que la descripción gramatical es necesariamente pluralista y requiere elaborar hipótesis, es decir, teoría.
