    Scaling in a continuous time model for biological aging

    In this paper we consider a generalization to the asexual version of the Penna model for biological aging, where we take a continuous time limit. The genotype associated to each individual is an interval of real numbers over which Dirac δ\delta--functions are defined, representing genetically programmed diseases to be switched on at defined ages of the individual life. We discuss two different continuous limits for the evolution equation and two different mutation protocols, to be implemented during reproduction. Exact stationary solutions are obtained and scaling properties are discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    Spontaneous thyroid haemorrhage is rare, but it can be a potentially life-threatening condition in severe cases, due to acute upper airway compromise. We report the case of a 75-year-old patient on chronic anticoagulation therapy for atrial fibrillation, who presented with sudden painful neck bulging and dysphagia. Physical examination revealed a hard mass on the anterior left side of the neck. Preliminary laryngoscopy was normal. The diagnosis was made using ultrasonography and further characterization with computed tomography, showing haemorrhage of a thyroid nodule with capsular disruption and diffusion of the haematoma to the deep cervical spaces, causing important tracheal deviation and hypopharynx compression. The patient developed dyspnoea and ultimately required urgent hemithyroidectomy.     4D Spin Glasses in Magnetic Field Have a Mean Field like Phase

    By using numerical simulations we show that the 4D J=±1J=\pm 1 Edwards Anderson spin glass in magnetic field undergoes a mean field like phase transition. We use a dynamical approach: we simulate large lattices (of volume VV) and work out the behavior of the system in limit where both tt and VV go to infinity, but where the limit V→∞V \to \infty is taken first. By showing that the dynamic overlap qq converges to a value smaller than the static one we exhibit replica symmetry breaking.     Lattice Gas Analogue Of SK Model: A paradigm for the glass transition

    We investigate the connection between the well known Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Ising Spin Glass and the corresponding Lattice Gas model by analyzing the relation between their thermodynamical functions. We present results of replica approach in the Replica Symmetric approximation and discuss its stability as a function of temperature and external source. Next we examine the effects of first order Replica Symmetry Breaking at zero temperature.     Neutral heavy lepton production at next high energy e+e−e^+e^- linear colliders

    The discovery potential for detecting new heavy Majorana and Dirac neutrinos at some recently proposed high energy e+e−e^+e^- colliders is discussed. These new particles are suggested by grand unified theories and superstring-inspired models. For these models the production of a single heavy neutrino is shown to be more relevant than pair production when comparing cross sections and neutrino mass ranges. The process e+e−⟶νe±W∓ e^+e^- \longrightarrow {\nu} e^{\pm} W^{\mp} is calculated including on-shell and off-shell heavy neutrino effects. We present a detailed study of cross sections and distributions that shows a clear separation between the signal and standard model contributions, even after including hadronization effects.Comment: 4 pages including 15 figures, 1 table.     Cosmology in the Universe with distance dependent Lorentz-violating bakground

    We consider a cosmological setup with the inflaton field in the presence of a redshift dependent Lorentz-violating time-like background to address the inflationary regime and other phases of the Universe.     On the Stability of the Mean-Field Glass Broken Phase under Non-Hamiltonian Perturbations

    We study the dynamics of the SK model modified by a small non-hamiltonian perturbation. We study aging, and we find that on the time scales investigated by our numerical simulations it survives a small perturbation (and is destroyed by a large one). If we assume we are observing a transient behavior the scaling of correlation times versus the asymmetry strength is not compatible with the one expected for the spherical model. We discuss the slow power law decay of observable quantities to equilibrium, and we show that for small perturbations power like decay is preserved. We also discuss the asymptotically large time region on small lattices.Comment: 34 page
