    Extra ZZ bosons and low-energy tests of unification

    If there is an extra U(1) gauge symmetry broken at low energies, then it may be possible from the charges of the known quarks and leptons under this U(1) to make inferences about how much gauge unification occurs at high scales and about the unification group. (For instance, there are certain observed properties of an extra U(1)â€ČU(1)' that would be inconsistent with unification in four dimensions at high scales.) A general analysis is presented.     Anthropic tuning of the weak scale and of m_u/m_d in two-Higgs-doublet models

    It is shown that in a model in which up-type and down-type fermions acquire mass from different Higgs doublets, the anthropic tuning of the Higgs mass parameters can explain the fact that the observed masses of the dd and uu quarks are nearly the same with dd slightly heavier. If Yukawa couplings are assumed not to "scan" (vary among domains), this would also help explain why the t quark is much heavier than the b quark. It is also pointed out that the existence of dark matter invalidates some earlier anthropic arguments against the viability of domains where the Standard Model Higgs has positive Ό2\mu^2, but makes other even stronger arguments possible.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figure

    Efficiency and Effectiveness of Social Spending

    In this qualitative sociological and quantitative economic policy paper, we start out from the assumption of a very recent European Commission Background paper on the “Efficiency and effectiveness of social spending”, which says the effectiveness of social spending can be defined by the degree to which the realized allocation approaches the socially desired outcome. The conclusions listed in the Commission paper are found far reaching and not supported by the empirical data. We perform such an analysis, starting from advances in recent literature. A more encompassing sociological perspective on the issue and factor analytical calculations is presented, which supports our general argument about the efficiency of the Scandinavian model. The social quality approach provides an alternative perspective on welfare system analysis, focusing on public policies rather than social policies. The empirical evidence, suggests that in terms of the efficiency of the European social model, the geography of comparative performance include: the direct action against social exclusion, health and family social expenditures, the neo-liberal approach, and the unemployment benefit centred approach. Applying rigorous comparative social science methodology, we also arrive at the conclusion that in terms of the initial ECOFIN definition of efficiency, the data presented in this article suggest that apart from Finland and the Netherlands, three new EU-27 member countries, especially the Czech Republic and Slovenia, provide interesting answers to the question about the efficiency of state expenditures in reducing poverty rates.social spending, European Commission, index numbers and aggregation, cross-sectional models, spatial models, economic integration, regional economic activity, international factor movements, nternational political economy

    Phase rigidity and avoided level crossings in the complex energy plane

    We consider the effective Hamiltonian of an open quantum system, its biorthogonal eigenfunctions ϕλ\phi_\lambda and define the value rλ=(Ï•Î»âˆŁÏ•Î»)/r_\lambda = (\phi_\lambda|\phi_\lambda)/ that characterizes the phase rigidity of the eigenfunctions ϕλ\phi_\lambda. In the scenario with avoided level crossings, rλr_\lambda varies between 1 and 0 due to the mutual influence of neighboring resonances. The variation of rλr_\lambda may be considered as an internal property of an {\it open} quantum system. In the literature, the phase rigidity ρ\rho of the scattering wave function ΚCE\Psi^E_C is considered. Since ΚCE\Psi^E_C can be represented in the interior of the system by the ϕλ\phi_\lambda, the phase rigidity ρ\rho of the ΚCE\Psi^E_C is related to the rλr_\lambda and therefore also to the mutual influence of neighboring resonances. As a consequence, the reduction of the phase rigidity ρ\rho to values smaller than 1 should be considered, at least partly, as an internal property of an open quantum system in the overlapping regime. The relation to measurable values such as the transmission through a quantum dot, follows from the fact that the transmission is, in any case, resonant with respect to the effective Hamiltonian. We illustrate the relation between phase rigidity ρ\rho and transmission numerically for small open cavities.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    A Realistic Radiative Fermion Mass Hierarchy in Non-supersymmetric SO(10)

    A non-supersymmetric grand unified theory can exhibit a "radiative fermion mass hierarchy", in which the heavier quarks and leptons get mass at tree level and the lighter ones get mass from loop diagrams. Recently the first predictive model of this type was proposed. Here it is analyzed numerically and it is shown to give an excellent fit to the quark and lepton masses and mixings, including the CP phase violating phase ΎCKM\delta_{CKM}.
