    We introduce a stochastic model in which adjacent planar regions A,BA, B merge stochastically at some rate λ(A,B)\lambda(A,B), and observe analogies with the well-studied topics of mean-field coagulation and of bond percolation. Do infinite regions appear in finite time? We give a simple condition on λ\lambda for this {\em hegemony} property to hold, and another simple condition for it to not hold, but there is a large gap between these conditions, which includes the case λ(A,B)≡1\lambda(A,B) \equiv 1. For this case, a non-rigorous analytic argument and simulations suggest hegemony.Comment: 13 page

    Datana drexelii (Lepidoptera: Notododontidae) occurrence and larval survival on highbush blueberry cultivars

    Plant genotype influences plant suitability to herbivores; domesticated plants selected for properties such as high fruit yield may be particularly vulnerable to herbivory. Cultivated strains of highbush blueberry, Vaccinium corymbosum L. can be high-quality hosts for larvae of the gregariously-feeding notodontid Datana drexelii (Hy. Edwards). We conducted an experiment assessing D. drexelii larval survival and pupal weight when fed foliage from five blueberry cultivars: ‘Bluecrop’, ‘Bluetta’, ‘Blueray’, ‘Lateblue’, and ‘Jersey’. We complemented this experimental work with repeated bush-level surveys of a managed blueberry patch for naturally occurring D. drexelii larval clusters. Larval survival and pupal weight were significantly higher on ‘Lateblue’ foliage than from the ‘Bluecrop’, ‘Bluetta’, and ‘Jersey’ cultivars. The blueberry patch surveys found more D. drexelii larval clusters on ‘Bluehaven’, ‘Collins’, and ‘Darrow’ bushes than on the cultivars ‘Earliblue’ and ‘Jersey’. The low D. drexelii occurrence and performance on the ‘Jersey’ cultivar suggests that this variety may be appropriate for areas where this pest is common; conversely, their high occurrence on ‘Bluehaven’ ‘Collins’, and ‘Darrow’ suggests that these cultivars may be particularly vulnerable.     Four-particle condensate in strongly coupled fermion systems

    Four-particle correlations in fermion systems at finite temperatures are investigated with special attention to the formation of a condensate. Instead of the instability of the normal state with respect to the onset of pairing described by the Gorkov equation, a new equation is obtained which describes the onset of quartetting. Within a model calculation for symmetric nuclear matter, we find that below a critical density, the four-particle condensation (alpha-like quartetting) is favored over deuteron condensation (triplet pairing). This pairing-quartetting competition is expected to be a general feature of interacting fermion systems, such as the excition-biexciton system in excited semiconductors.     Pairing properties of nucleonic matter employing dressed nucleons

    A survey of pairing properties of nucleonic matter is presented that includes the off-shell propagation associated with short-range and tensor correlations. For this purpose, the gap equation has been solved in its most general form employing the complete energy and momentum dependence of the normal self-energy contributions. The latter correlations include the self-consistent calculation of the nucleon self-energy that is generated by the summation of ladder diagrams. This treatment preserves the conservation of particle number unlike approaches in which the self-energy is based on the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation. A huge reduction in the strength as well as temperature and density range of 3S1{}^3S_1-3D1{}^3D_1 pairing is obtained for nuclear matter as compared to the standard BCS treatment. Similar dramatic results pertain to 1S0{}^1S_0 pairing of neutrons in neutron matter.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figure

    The Nucleon Spectral Function at Finite Temperature and the Onset of Superfluidity in Nuclear Matter

    Nucleon selfenergies and spectral functions are calculated at the saturation density of symmetric nuclear matter at finite temperatures. In particular, the behaviour of these quantities at temperatures above and close to the critical temperature for the superfluid phase transition in nuclear matter is discussed. It is shown how the singularity in the thermodynamic T-matrix at the critical temperature for superfluidity (Thouless criterion) reflects in the selfenergy and correspondingly in the spectral function. The real part of the on-shell selfenergy (optical potential) shows an anomalous behaviour for momenta near the Fermi momentum and temperatures close to the critical temperature related to the pairing singularity in the imaginary part. For comparison the selfenergy derived from the K-matrix of Brueckner theory is also calculated. It is found, that there is no pairing singularity in the imaginary part of the selfenergy in this case, which is due to the neglect of hole-hole scattering in the K-matrix.
