Mussel Culture
Mari culture of bivalves greater importance in meeting the increasing protein
demands of the human population. Bivalve groups such as oyster, mussel and clam
are the most important cultivable organisms all over the world. Of these, P.viridis
and P.indica forms the most dominant cultivable species. The Central Marine
Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has developed eco-friendly techniques for
mussel culture. Recently, CMFRI has taken up efforts to popularize mussel culture in
all coastal districts of Kerala
A report on the organised fishing for the black clam (Villorita cyprinoides) in Aryad, Vembanad lake, Kerala
The Vembanad lake is one of the largest
estuarine water bodies extending over three
districts of Kerala, covering 32 fishing villages
and supports a rich fishery of fish and clams. The
black clam Villorita cyprlnoides is the major clam
resource in the lake

Integrated farming of mussel and edible oyster by self help groups in Sathar Island, Ernakulam District, Kerala
Among the maritime states of India, Kerala with
a coastline of 590 km and 39,139 sq km of continental
shelf area enjoys the distinction of being the foremost
marine producer and exporter. The potential yield of
the area up to 200 m depth has been estimated to
be about 8 lakh tonnes
New trends in farming mussels and edible oyster in India
The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) by setting up
demonstration farms and conducting training programmes to fishers was able to
popularize bivalve farming in Kerala State. Simultaneously, through interactions
with the State government officials and members oflocal governing bodies, project
proposals on oyster and mussel farming were recognized .as financially viable
schemes for rural development and self-employment. Since 1995, edible bivalves
like the Indian backwater oyster, Crassotrea madrasensis and the green mussel,
Perna viridis are farmed on a commercial scale in the estuaries of Keral
Clam fisheries of Vembanad Lake, Kerala with observations on the socio economic conditions of the clam fisheries
Vembanad Lake is the main estuary system which harbours rich resources of clams along the south west coast of India. Villorita cyprinoides) is the main resource followed by Meretrix cata, Paphia malabarica and Suneta scripta.Annualy about 31650 tonnes of clams are harvested and out of which 31430 tonnes is contributed by the black clam
Population characteristics and some aspects of the biology of oceanic squid Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis (Lesson, 1830)
An analysis of 15 specimens of the oceanic squid Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis caught by hooks and lines from
the Arabian Sea showed that the growth pattern was isometric with the length-weight relationship W = 0.0276
L"'. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated were L_ = 49.1 cm; K = 0.83 yrl and to, -0.06 yr.
Other population parameters such as optimum length for exploitation, length at maturity and natural mortality
rate were also estimated. Relative fecundity was 125 no. /g body weight. The egg diameter ranged from 0.7
to 0.9 mm. The scope for exploitation of the oceanic squid is discussed.
Mabe Pearls : A simple way to value added pearls (Pamphlet)
The Central Mari ne Fi sheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Cochin,
the premjer fisheries research institute of the coun tr)', developed the
technology for cul tured marine pearl production during the early
1980s. Now, scientists of the insti tute have succeeded in perfecting
a simple technique for value added marine pearls, called mabe (mah-BAY)
pearls. A mabe pearl is a dome shaped or image pearl produced
by placing a hemisphe re or miniaturc image against the side
of the oyster shell interior. The result is an exquisite pearly nacre
coated miniature image of anything dear to humans like Ganesha,
Saraswathy, Lakshmi, Ashoka, Crescent and Holy Cross etc. These
miniature images can be made into pendants, eardrops and rings. A
fine quality Mabe pearl of 10 mm size can easily fetch more than US$
100 in international markets and an average of Rs. 1000 in local
markets
Checklist of marine bivalves and gastropods off Kollam, Kerala
Species diversity of any region can be illustrated
by means of an available checklist. It provides an
overview of the species that have been recorded.
and can be considered to understand the local
fauna. Fortnightly surveys were carried out to
collect the shell-molluscs samples during 2012 - 2014
period from the by-catch of shrimp/fish trawlers
landed at Sakthikulangara-Neendakara Fishing
Harbour, Kollam. Collected bivalves and gastropods
included both empty shells and living animals.
Collected shells were brought to the laboratory and
placed in freezer for 24 hours. This would liquefy
the mollusc body and allowed easy extraction with
a strong jet of water
