Parasitism of Female Neotibicen linnei (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) by Larvae of the Sarcophagid Fly Emblemasoma erro in Wisconsin

Herein it is reported an unusual case of parasitism of a female Neotibicen linnei (Smith and Grossbeck) by the sarcophagid Emblemasoma erro (Aldrich) in western Wisconsin. Sarcophagids typically attack male cicadas, locating them by the latter’s acoustical behavior. Some members of the dipteran family Sarcophagidae are parasitic on male cicadas (e.g. Soper et. al. 1976, Lakes-Harlan et. al. 2000, Faris et. al. 2008, Stucky 2015). Parasitoids such as Emblemasoma species are attracted to larviposit on male cicadas by responding to the latter’s acoustical signals (Tron et. al. 2016). Sarcophagids, therefore, are generally not attracted to mute female cicadas. In this brief communique, I report an unusual instance of a female of the cicada Neotibicen linnei being successfully parasitized by Emblemasoma erro in western Wisconsin

Identifying features predictive of faculty integrating computation into physics courses

Computation is a central aspect of 21st century physics practice; it is used to model complicated systems, to simulate impossible experiments, and to analyze mountains of data. Physics departments and their faculty are increasingly recognizing the importance of teaching computation to their students. We recently completed a national survey of faculty in physics departments to understand the state of computational instruction and the factors that underlie that instruction. The data collected from the faculty responding to the survey included a variety of scales, binary questions, and numerical responses. We then used Random Forest, a supervised learning technique, to explore the factors that are most predictive of whether a faculty member decides to include computation in their physics courses. We find that experience using computation with students in their research, or lack thereof and various personal beliefs to be most predictive of a faculty member having experience teaching computation. Interestingly, we find demographic and departmental factors to be less useful factors in our model. The results of this study inform future efforts to promote greater integration of computation into the physics curriculum as well as comment on the current state of computational instruction across the United States

Kinetics of Surface Enrichment: A Molecular Dynamics Study

We use molecular dynamics (MD) to study the kinetics of surface enrichment (SE) in a stable homogeneous mixture (AB), placed in contact with a surface which preferentially attracts A. The SE profiles show a characteristic double-exponential behavior with two length scales: \xi_-, which rapidly saturates to its equilibrium value, and \xi_+, which diverges as a power-law with time (\xi_+ \sim t^\theta). We find that hydrodynamic effects result in a crossover of the growth exponent from \theta \simeq 0.5 to \theta \simeq 1.0.
