    Central oxytocin and food intake: focus on macronutrient-driven reward

    Centrally acting oxytocin (OT) is known to terminate food consumption in response to excessive stomach distension, increase in salt loading, and presence of toxins. Hypothalamic-hindbrain OT pathways facilitate these aspects of OT-induced hypophagia. However, recent discoveries have implicated OT in modifications of feeding via reward circuits: OT has been found to differentially affect consumption of individual macronutrients in choice and no-choice paradigms. In this mini-review, we focus on presenting and interpreting evidence that defines OT as a key component of mechanisms that reduce eating for pleasure and shape macronutrient preferences. We also provide remarks on challenges in integrating the knowledge on physiological and pathophysiological states in which both OT activity and macronutrient preferences are affected

    Raising the Dead: Clues to Type Ia Supernova Physics from the Remnant 0509-67.5

    We present Chandra X-ray observations of the young supernova remnant (SNR) 0509-67.5 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), believed to be the product of a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia). The remnant is very round in shape, with a distinct clumpy shell-like structure. Our Chandra data reveal the remnant to be rich in silicon, sulfur, and iron. The yields of our fits to the global spectrum confirm that 0509-67.5 is the remnant of an SN Ia and show a clear preference for delayed detonation explosion models for SNe Ia. We study the spectrum of the single brightest isolated knot in the remnant and find that it is enhanced in iron by a factor of roughly two relative to the global remnant abundances. This feature, along with similar knots seen in Tycho's SNR, argues for the presence of modest small-scale composition inhomogeneities in SNe Ia. The presence of both Si and Fe, with abundance ratios that vary from knot to knot, indicates that these came from the transition region between the Si- and Fe-rich zones in the exploded star, possibly as a result of energy input to the ejecta at late times due to the radioactive decay of 56Ni and 56Co. Two cases for the continuum emission from the global spectrum were modeled: one where the continuum is dominated by hydrogen thermal bremsstrahlung radiation; another where the continuum arises from non-thermal synchrotron radiation. The former case requires a relatively large value for the ambient density (~1 cm^-3). Another estimate of the ambient density comes from using the shell structure of the remnant in the context of dynamical models. This requires a much lower value for the density (<0.05 cm^-3) which is more consistent with other evidence known about 0509-67.5. We therefore conclude that the bulk of the continuum emission from 0509-67.5 has a non-thermal origin.Comment: 34 pages, 9 figures (1 color), accepted to ApJ (10 June 2004 issue); correction made to calculation of magnetic field, small sentence change

    We implement the efficient line of sight method to calculate the anisotropy and polarization of the cosmic microwave background for scalar and tensor modes in almost-Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models with positive spatial curvature.     A relationship between the integrated CO intensity and the radio continuum emission in spiral galaxies

    In an effort to determine the role played by cosmic ray electrons and interstellar radiation fields on the collapse of molecular clouds, a survey was begun to investigate the relationship between the radio continuum brightness emission and the integrated CO intensity in spiral galaxies. The investigation was done on two scales; a global galaxy to galaxy comparison of integrated disk values, and a ring-averaged study over the disks of individual galaxies. For the large-scale survey, radio continuum flux densities integrated over the full disk at 1.49 GHz were taken from Condon (1987) and the total CO fluxes were taken from Verter (1985). The galaxies with values included in the two catalogs are displayed. It can be seen that a good correlation exists between the integrated CO emission and radio continuum emission

    A high resolution CO map of M51

    Observations of the CO (1-0) emission in two fields of M51 were taken with the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Array at Hat Creek, California from May 1988 to February 1989. When combined with two previously observed fields (Lo et al. 1988), a complete map of the central 5 minute x 4 minute at a resolution of 7 seconds x 10 seconds was obtained. The project is part of an ongoing high-resolution survey of the molecular, atomic, and ionized gas distributions in nearby spiral galaxies. The two recently observed fields can be compared to the results of the interferometric study of Vogel et al. (1988 - hereafter VKS). Since the shortest spacing in the current survey is shorter than that of VKS, researchers expect to see more of the extended emission. This is evident when comparing the width of the spiral arms in each survey; ours are a bit broader. While some of the peaks in this region correspond to the peaks in VKS, several of them do not. These discrepancies are probably because of the low signal to noise inherent in observations of this nature. Single-dish maps are currently being readied for inclusion with the interferometer data. These will help fill the short-spacing hole in the UV plane, and serve to recover the flux missing from the interferometer maps

    The evaluation of Education Maintenance Allowance Pilots: three years' evidence: a quantitative evaluation

    This is the third report of the longitudinal quantitative evaluation of Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) pilots and the first since the government announced that EMA is to be rolled out nationally from 2004. The evaluation was commissioned in 1999, by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) from a consortium of research organisations, led by the Centre for Research in Social Policy (CRSP) and including the National Centre for Social Research, the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) and the National Institute for Careers Education and Counselling (NICEC). The statistical evaluation design is a longitudinal cohort study involving large random sample surveys of young people (and their parents) in 10 EMA pilot areas and eleven control areas. Two cohorts of young people were selected from Child Benefit records. The first cohort of young people left compulsory schooling in the summer of 1999 and they, and their parents, were interviewed between October 1999 and April 2000 (Year 12 interview). A second interview was carried out with these young people between October 2000 and April 2001 (Year 13 interview). The second cohort left compulsory education the following summer of 2000 and young people, and their parents, were first interviewed between October 2000 and April 2001. The report uses both propensity score matching (PSM) and descriptive techniques, each of which brings their own particular strengths to the analysis
