Infrared Optical Properties of Ferropericlase (Mg1-xFexO): Experiment and Theory
The temperature dependence of the reflectance spectra of magnesium oxide
(MgO) and ferropericlase (Mg1-xFexO, for x=0.06 and x=0.27) have been measured
over a wide frequency range (~50 to 32000 cm-1) at 295 and 6 K. The complex
dielectric function has been determined from a Kramers-Kronig analysis of the
reflectance. The spectra of the doped materials resembles pure MgO in the
infrared region, but with much broader resonances. We use a shell model to
calculate the dielectric function of ferropericlase, including both anharmonic
phonon-phonon interactions and disorder scattering. These data are relevant to
understanding the heat conductivity of ferropericlase in the earth's lower

Impact of a Proposed Reservoir on Local Land Values
This project was designed to study the impact of private preconstruction land acquisition in a Central Kentucky area in which a flood-control dam and reservoir impoundment is planned. The research design was built around use of anthropological concepts and research techniques. By these means it was possible to analyze the perceived values of land to traditionalist residents, among which social and economic security concepts are paramount. Recent land purchases, locally believed to have been made chiefly by outsiders, (urbanites from nearby Louisville), at prices out of line in terms of local agricultural worth, has been extremely unsettling contributing to the anxiety pattern typical of persons facing dislocation and their sympathizers. The newly developing pattern of land purchase, with values related to residential convenience, and access to the urban center, rather than to traditional agricultural values, has been accepted by a certain segment of the local population who appear to be trying to take advantage of the urban economic opportunities while retaining at least part of the rural value system and continuing to participate in rural society and rurally esteemed activities
Quantum Electrical Dipole in Triangular Systems: a Model for Spontaneous Polarity in Metal Clusters
Triangular symmetric molecules with mirror symmetry perpendicular to the
3-fold axis are forbidden to have a fixed electrical dipole moment. However, if
the ground state is orbitally degenerate and lacks inversion symmetry, then a
``quantum'' dipole moment does exist. The system of 3 electrons in D_3h
symmetry is our example. This system is realized in triatomic molecules like
Na_3. Unlike the fixed dipole of a molecule like water, the quantum moment does
not point in a fixed direction, but lies in the plane of the molecule and takes
quantized values +/- mu_0 along any direction of measurement in the plane. An
electric field F in the plane leads to a linear Stark splitting +/- mu_0 F}. We
introduce a toy model to study the effect of Jahn-Teller distortions on the
quantum dipole moment. We find that the quantum dipole property survives when
the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect is included, if the distortion of the molecule
is small. Linear Stark splittings are suppressed in low fields by molecular
rotation, just as the linear Stark shift of water is suppressed, but will be
revealed in moderately large applied fields and low temperatures. Coulomb

Current Star Formation in the Ophiuchus and Perseus Molecular Clouds: Constraints and Comparisons from Unbiased Submillimeter and Mid-Infrared Surveys. II
We present a census of the population of deeply embedded young stellar
objects (YSOs) in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud complex based on a combination
of Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared data from the "Cores to Disks" (c2d)
legacy team and JCMT/SCUBA submillimeter maps from the COMPLETE team. We have
applied a method developed for identifying embedded protostars in Perseus to
these datasets and in this way construct a relatively unbiased sample of 27
candidate embedded protostars with envelopes more massive than our sensitivity
limit (about 0.1 M_sun). Embedded YSOs are found in 35% of the SCUBA cores -
less than in Perseus (58%). On the other hand the mid-infrared sources in
Ophiuchus have less red mid-infrared colors, possibly indicating that they are
less embedded. We apply a nearest neighbor surface density algorithm to define
the substructure in each of the clouds and calculate characteristic numbers for
each subregion - including masses, star formation efficiencies, fraction of
embedded sources etc. Generally the main clusters in Ophiuchus and Perseus
(L1688, NGC1333 and IC348) are found to have higher star formation efficiencies
than small groups such as B1, L1455 and L1448, which on the other hand are
completely dominated by deeply embedded protostars. We discuss possible
explanations for the differences between the regions in Perseus and Ophiuchus,
such as different evolutionary timescales for the YSOs or differences, e.g., in

Temperature dependence of the resistance of metallic nanowires (diameter 15 nm): Applicability of Bloch-Gr\"{u}neisen theorem
We have measured the resistances (and resistivities) of Ag and Cu nanowires
of diameters ranging from 15nm to 200nm in the temperature range 4.2K-300K with
the specific aim to assess the applicability of the Bloch-Gr\"{u}neisen formula
for electron phonon resistivity in these nanowires. The wires were grown within
polymeric templates by electrodeposition. We find that in all the samples the
resistance reaches a residual value at T=4.2K and the temperature dependence of
resistance can be fitted to the Bloch-Gr\"{u}neisen formula in the entire
temperature range with a well defined transport Debye temperature
(). The value of Debye temperature obtained from the fits lie
within 8% of the bulk value for Ag wires of diameter 15nm while for Cu
nanowires of the same diameter the Debye temperature is significantly lesser
than the bulk value. The electron-phonon coupling constants (measured by
or ) in the nanowires were found to have the same
value as that of the bulk. The resistivities of the wires were seen to increase
as the wire diameter was decreased. This increase in the resistivity of the
wires may be attributed to surface scattering of conduction electrons. The
specularity p was estimated to be about 0.5. The observed results allow us to
obtain the resistivities exactly from the resistance and gives us a method of
obtaining the exact numbers of wires within the measured array (grown within

The Prevalence of Healthcare Associated Infections Among Adult Inpatients at Nineteen Large Australian Acute-care Public Hospitals: A Point Prevalence Survey
Background
Australia does not have a national healthcare associated infection (HAI) surveillance program. Only one HAI point prevalence study has been undertaken in 1984. The objective of this study was to estimate the burden of healthcare associated infection (HAI) in acute adult inpatients in Australia. Methods
A cross sectional point prevalence study (PPS) was conducted in a sample of large acute care hospitals. All data were collected by two trained Research Assistants. Surveillance methodology was based on the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) PPS Protocol with variation in the sampling method in that only acute inpatients ≥ 18 years old were included. ECDC HAI definitions were applied. Results
Data was collected between August and November 2018. A total of 2767 patients from 19 hospitals were included in the study. The median age of patients was 67, and 52.9% of the sample were male. Presence of a multi-drug resistant organism was documented for 10.3% of the patients. There were 363 HAIs present in 273 patients. The prevalence of patients with a HAI was 9.9% (95%CI: 8.8–11.0). Hospital prevalence rates ranged from 5.7% (95%CI:2.9–11.0) to 17.0% (95%CI:10.7–26.1). The most common HAIs were surgical site infection, pneumonia and urinary tract infection, comprising 64% of all HAIs identified. Conclusion
This is the first HAI PPS to be conducted in Australia in 34 years. The prevalence rate is higher than the previous Australian study and that reported by the ECDC, however differences in methodology limit comparison. Regular, large scale HAI PPS should be undertaken to generate national HAI data to inform and drive national interventions
