    Report on estimating the size of dolphin schools, based on data obtained during a charter cruise of the M/V Gina Anne, October 11 -November 25, 1979

    Estimates of dolphin school sizes made by observers and crew members aboard tuna seiners or by observers on ship or aerial surveys are important components of population estimates of dolphins which are involved in the yellowfin tuna fishery in the eastern Pacific. Differences in past estimates made from tuna seiners and research ships and aircraft have been noted by Brazier (1978). To compare various methods of estimating dolphin school sizes a research cruise was undertaken with the following major objectives: 1) compare estimates made by observers aboard a tuna seiner and in the ship's helicopter, from aerial photographs, and from counts made at the backdown channel, 2) compare estimates of observers who are told the count of the school size after making their estimate to the observer who is not aware of the count to determine if observers can learn to estimate more accurately, and 3) obtain movie and still photographs of dolphin schools of known size at various stages of chase, capture and release to be used for observer training. The secondary objectives of the cruise were to: 1) obtain life history specimens and data from any dolphins that were killed incidental to purse seining. These specimens and data were to be analyzed by the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service ( NMFS ) , 2) record evasion tactics of dolphin schools by observing them from the helicopter while the seiner approached the school, 3) examine alternative methods for estimating the distance and bearing of schools where they were first sighted, 4) collect the Commission's standard cetacean sighting, set log and daily activity data and expendable bathythermograph data.     On the complete analytic structure of the massive gravitino propagator in four-dimensional de Sitter space

    With the help of the general theory of the Heun equation, this paper completes previous work by the authors and other groups on the explicit representation of the massive gravitino propagator in four-dimensional de Sitter space. As a result of our original contribution, all weight functions which multiply the geometric invariants in the gravitino propagator are expressed through Heun functions, and the resulting plots are displayed and discussed after resorting to a suitable truncation in the series expansion of the Heun function. It turns out that there exist two ranges of values of the independent variable in which the weight functions can be divided into dominating and sub-dominating family.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures.     ARPES Study of X-Point Band Overlaps in LaB6_6 and SmB6_6 - Contrast to SrB6_6 and EuB6_6

    In contrast to our recent finding of an X-point band gap in divalent hexaborides, we report here that angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data shows that the gap is absent for trivalent LaB6_6 and is absent or nearly so for mixed valent SmB6_6. This finding demonstrates a nontrivial evolution of the band structure from divalent to trivalent hexaborides.Comment: submitted to SCES '0

    Effect of moisture and bulk density sampling on neutron moisture gauge calibration

    Three moisture and bulk density sampling methods were evaluated for use in neutron gauge calibration. Each of the methods was comprised of a single core or portions of a core taken during installation of a neutron access tube. In addition to direct measurement of bulk density, the effect of using "smoothed", "probable" and gamma-probe measured bulk density profiles was evaluated. The use of these three alternative bulk density profiles in the computation of volumetric moisture generally had insignificant effect on the resulting neutron gauge calibration equation. The use of a depth-weighted volumetric moisture profile generally improved calibration statistics, but reduced slopes of neutron calibration equations (% moisture per count ratio). Overall, a total core method which used a tractor-mounted, hydraulically operated coring tool provided the most consistent calibrations with lowest standard errors of estimate, although compression of soil along the perimeter of the cored hole increased subsequent neutron count ratios. A "Madera" down-hole sampler generally provided good calibrations, also. A third, small-volume, down-hole sampler provided valid moisture and bulk density samples; however, the smaller representative volume of the sampler relative to the sampling volume of neutron gauges adversely affected slopes of some calibration equations

    Calibrating neutron depth gauges for measuring soil water content profiles requires soil bulk density data. In this study, the feasibility of using a single probe gamma density gauge to measure the soil wet bulk density was investigated for use in neutron gauge calibration. The same sites, access tubes, and conventional gravimetric soil data used for the ASCE Neutron Gauge Calibration Study were used for the Gamma Gauge Study. Iterative procedures were successfully developed to calibrate the gamma density gauge, and then to convert wet bulk density to dry bulk density data for the three soil sites studied

    Heavy Metal, Organochlorine Pesticide and Polychlorinated Biphenyl Contamination in Arctic Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus Parryi) in Northern Alaska

    Heavy metal and organochlorine (OC) concentrations including organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs), were determined in arctic ground squirrels (Spermophilus parryi) from three sites in the Brooks Range of northern Alaska in 1991-93. Heavy metals were present in most squirrel livers collected, with concentrations of trace elements (As, Cd, Hg, Ni, and Pb) averaging below 1 micro g/g wet weight. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), p,p'-DDE, gamma hexachlorocyclohexane (gamma-HCH), trans-nonachlor, and PCBs 138, 153, and 170 were the most frequently detected OCs in fat and liver. Average concentrations of individual OC analytes were below 20 ng/g wet weight in liver and below 15 ng/g wet weight in fat. Rank correlations indicate that concentrations of heavy metals and of OCs accumulate in concert with one another (As, Cd, Cu, and Zn; PCBs 138, 170, and 180). Although heavy metal and OC concentrations are low relative to other areas and other arctic species, the occurrence of these compounds illustrates the global pervasiveness of persistent organic compounds and the potential for bioaccumulation in the terrestrial arctic food web.De 1991 à 1993, on a mesuré les concentrations en métaux lourds et en organochlorés, y compris des pesticides organochlorés et des congénères du diphényle polychloré (PCB), chez le spermophile arctique (Spermophilus parryi) à trois endroits situés dans la chaîne de Brooks de l'Alaska septentrional. On a trouvé des métaux lourds dans la plupart des foies de spermophiles prélevés, avec des concentrations en éléments traces (As, Cd, Hg, Ni et Pb) inférieures en moyenne à 1 µg/g de poids frais. L'hexachlorobenzène (HCB), le p,p'-DDE, l'hexachlorocyclohexane gamma (HCH-gamma), le trans-nonachlore et les PCB 138, 153 et 170 étaient les organochlorés les plus fréquemment détectés dans le tissu adipeux et le foie. Les concentrations moyennes des organochlorés analysés individuellement étaient inférieures à 20 ng/g de poids frais pour le foie et à 15 ng/g de poids frais pour le tissu adipeux. Les corrélations de rang révèlent que les concentrations en métaux lourds augmentent de concert avec celles en organochlorés (As, Cd, Cu et Zn; PCB 138, 170 et 180). Bien que les concentrations en métaux lourds et en organochlorés soient faibles par rapport à celles d'autres régions et à celles d'autres espèces arctiques, la présence de ces composés illustre l'omniprésence planétaire de composés organiques persistants et le potentiel pour une accumulation biologique dans le réseau trophique terrestre de l'Arctique
