Land tenure in rural lowland Myanmar: From historical perspectives to contemporary realities in the Dry zone and the Delta: Of lives of land Myanmar research series.

This study emerged out of an identified need to document social processes leading to land insecurity, and those leading to investment and sustainable use of lands by rural populations. Focusing on the Delta and Dry Zone, the main paddy producing regions of Myanmar, this analysis unravels the powers at play in shaping rural households’ relationship to land. From British colonization to the 2012 reforms, many issues have remained relatively unchanged with regards to local dynamics of landlessness, exclusion processes, local power plays, restrictions in farmers’ land rights and the State’s excessive focus on rice. In the midst of a fast evolving legal context, this work provides a typology of farmers and the landless and argues that more attention needs to be paid to understand the diversity of rural households and forms of landlessness

Farming Systems Analysis: A guidebook for researchers and development practitioners in Myanmar

This guidebook was written for students, researchers and development practitioners engaged in supporting family farmers in Myanmar and other areas of Southeast Asia. It provides detailed methodological guidance to carry out farming systems analyses. The guidebook provides key concepts and tools for a better understanding of farmers’ decisions and practices. The guidebook helps nurture a professional dialogue between farmers and rural development practitioners, to effectively support family farmers’ productive activities and their future aspirations. The guidebook was developed by GRET in partnership with Yezin Agricultural University. It is based on 18 months of experience conducting farming systems research in five States and Regions of Myanmar

Violence et production de l’espace | Violence and the production of space

Ce numéro spécial contribue de deux manières à mieux saisir l’articulation entre production de l’espace et violence et à ce que cela implique en matière de justice spatiale. Tout d’abord, en rassemblant des contributions très variées, tant d’un point de vue empirique que théorique, ce numéro spécial atteste que la notion de violence occupe, même si c’est souvent de façon implicite, une place majeure dans les travaux critiques en géographie humaine, particulièrement ceux réalisés par les jeunes chercheurs. Plutôt que d’envisager ce numéro comme un panorama exhaustif, nous le concevons comme une fenêtre thématique et analytique qui invite le lecteur à poursuivre et à approfondir les approches géographiques de la notion de violence.. Ensuite, l’objectif de ce numéro est de montrer que les recherches récentes sur la violence sont révélatrices de certains des principaux moteurs de la production actuelle de l’espace (une notion que nous discutons plus loin).
