Development of sputtered techniques for thrust chambers
Procedures for closing out coolant passages in regeneratively cooled thrust chambers by triode sputtering, using post and hollow Cu-0.15 percent Zr cathodes are described. The effects of aluminum composite filler materials, substrate preparation, sputter cleaning, substrate bias current density and system geometry on closeout layer bond strength and structure are evaluated. High strength closeout layers were sputtered over aluminum fillers. The tensile strength and microstructure of continuously sputtered Cu-0.15 percent Zr deposits were determined. These continuous sputtered deposits were as thick as 0.75 cm. Tensile strengths were consistently twice as great as the strength of the material in wrought form
Characterization of a Quantum Light Source Based on Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion
We have built a quantum light source capable of producing different types of
quantum states. The quantum light source is based on entangled state
preparation in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The
single-photon detection rate of eight-hundred thousand per second demonstrates
that we have created a bright state-of-the-art quantum light source. As a part
of the characterization we measured two-photon quantum interference in a
Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer.Comment: 33 page
Molecular phylogeny of brachiopods and phoronids based on nuclear-encoded small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences
Brachiopod and phoronid phylogeny is inferred from SSU rDNA sequences of 28 articulate and nine inarticulate brachiopods, three phoronids, two ectoprocts and various outgroups, using gene trees reconstructed by weighted parsimony, distance and maximum likelihood methods. Of these sequences, 33 from brachiopods, two from phoronids and one each from an ectoproct and a priapulan are newly determined. The brachiopod sequences belong to 31 different genera and thus survey about 10% of extant genus-level diversity. Sequences determined in different laboratories and those from closely related taxa agree well, but evidence is presented suggesting that one published phoronid sequence (GenBank accession UO12648) is a brachiopod-phoronid chimaera, and this sequence is excluded from the analyses. The chiton, Acanthopleura, is identified as the phenetically proximal outgroup; other selected outgroups were chosen to allow comparison with recent, non-molecular analyses of brachiopod phylogeny. The different outgroups and methods of phylogenetic reconstruction lead to similar results, with differences mainly in the resolution of weakly supported ancient and recent nodes, including the divergence of inarticulate brachiopod sub-phyla, the position of the rhynchonellids in relation to long- and short-looped articulate brachiopod clades and the relationships of some articulate brachiopod genera and species. Attention is drawn to the problem presented by nodes that are strongly supported by non-molecular evidence but receive only low bootstrap resampling support. Overall, the gene trees agree with morphology-based brachiopod taxonomy, but novel relationships are tentatively suggested for thecideidine and megathyrid brachiopods. Articulate brachiopods are found to be monophyletic in all reconstructions, but monophyly of inarticulate brachiopods and the possible inclusion of phoronids in the inarticulate brachiopod clade are less strongly established. Phoronids are clearly excluded from a sister-group relationship with articulate brachiopods, this proposed relationship being due to the rejected, chimaeric sequence (GenBank UO12648). Lineage relative rate tests show no heterogeneity of evolutionary rate among articulate brachiopod sequences, but indicate that inarticulate brachiopod plus phoronid sequences evolve somewhat more slowly. Both brachiopods and phoronids evolve slowly by comparison with other invertebrates. A number of palaeontologically dated times of earliest appearance are used to make upper and lower estimates of the global rate of brachiopod SSU rDNA evolution, and these estimates are used to infer the likely divergence times of other nodes in the gene tree. There is reasonable agreement between most inferred molecular and palaeontological ages. The estimated rates of SSU rDNA sequence evolution suggest that the last common ancestor of brachiopods, chitons and other protostome invertebrates (Lophotrochozoa and Ecdysozoa) lived deep in Precambrian time. Results of this first DNA-based, taxonomically representative analysis of brachiopod phylogeny are in broad agreement with current morphology-based classification and systematics and are largely consistent with the hypothesis that brachiopod shell ontogeny and morphology are a good guide to phylogeny
Regularity of higher codimension area minimizing integral currents
This lecture notes are an expanded version of the course given at the
ERC-School on Geometric Measure Theory and Real Analysis, held in Pisa,
September 30th - October 30th 2013. The lectures aim to explain the main steps
of a new proof of the partial regularity of area minimizing integer rectifiable
currents in higher codimension, due originally to F. Almgren, which is
contained in a series of papers in collaboration with C. De Lellis (University

Observation of nonlinear bands in near-field scanning optical microscopy of a photonic-crystal waveguide
We have measured the photonic bandstructure of GaAs photonic-crystal
waveguides with high energy and momentum resolution using near-field scanning
optical microscopy. Intriguingly, we observe additional bands that are not
predicted by eigenmode solvers, as was recently demonstrated by Huisman et al.
[Phys. Rev. B 86, 155154 (2012)]. We study the presence of these additional
bands by performing measurements of these bands while varying the incident
light power, revealing a non-linear power dependence. Here, we demonstrate
experimentally and theoretically that the observed additional bands are caused
by a waveguide-specific near- field tip effect not previously reported, which
can significantly phase-modulate the detected field.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Quasi-molecular Satellites of Lyman Beta in the Spectrum of the DA White Dwarf WOLF 1346
We present new FUV/UV observations of the DA white dwarf Wolf 1346 obtained
with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope. The atmospheric parameters of this
object are estimated from a fit of model atmospheres to several optical spectra
to be Teff = 20000 K, log g = 7.90. From the optical spectrum this star is a
normal DA without any indications for chemical elements other than hydrogen.
The hydrogen line L beta, however, shows a very unusual shape, with a steep red
wing and two absorption features on this wing. The shape is reminiscent of the
effects of quasi-molecular line broadening, as observed in L alpha in cooler DA
white dwarfs. We show that this is indeed the correct explanation, by
identifying 4 quasi-molecular satellites caused through perturbations by the H+
ion (H2+ quasi-molecule). The steep red wing is caused by the exponential
decline of the line profile beyond the satellite most distant from the line

Observation of sub-Bragg diffraction of waves in crystals
We investigate the diffraction conditions and associated formation of
stopgaps for waves in crystals with different Bravais lattices. We identify a
prominent stopgap in high-symmetry directions that occurs at a frequency below
the ubiquitous first-order Bragg condition. This sub-Bragg diffraction
condition is demonstrated by reflectance spectroscopy on two-dimensional
photonic crystals with a centred rectangular lattice, revealing prominent
diffraction peaks for both the sub-Bragg and first-order Bragg condition. These
results have implications for wave propagation in 2 of the 5 two-dimensional
Bravais lattices and 7 out of 14 three-dimensional Bravais lattices, such as
centred rectangular, triangular, hexagonal and body-centred cubic
