Wigner function negativity and contextuality in quantum computation on rebits
We describe a universal scheme of quantum computation by state injection on
rebits (states with real density matrices). For this scheme, we establish
contextuality and Wigner function negativity as computational resources,
extending results of [M. Howard et al., Nature 510, 351--355 (2014)] to
two-level systems. For this purpose, we define a Wigner function suited to
systems of rebits, and prove a corresponding discrete Hudson's theorem. We
introduce contextuality witnesses for rebit states, and discuss the
compatibility of our result with state-independent contextuality.Comment: 18 + 4 page
Entrainment effects in neutron-proton mixtures within the nuclear-energy density functional theory. II. Finite temperatures and arbitrary currents
Mutual entrainment effects in hot neutron-proton superfluid mixtures are
studied in the framework of the self-consistent nuclear energy-density
functional theory. The local mass currents in homogeneous or inhomogeneous
nuclear systems, which we derive from the time-dependent
Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations at finite temperatures, are shown to have the
same formal expression as the ones we found earlier in the absence of pairing
at zero temperature. Analytical expressions for the entrainment matrix are
obtained for application to superfluid neutron-star cores. Results are compared
to those obtained earlier using Landau's theory. Our formulas, valid for
arbitrary temperatures and currents, are applicable to various types of
functionals including the Brussels-Montreal series for which unified equations
of state have been already calculated, thus laying the ground for a fully
consistent microscopic description of superfluid neutron stars.Comment: 23 pages, expanded version including the exact solution of TDHFB.

This thesis deals with the synthesis and the study of a new family of π-conjugated polymers based on the thieno[3,4-d]thiazole (TTz) moiety for their applications in photovoltaic devices. Complementary to this study, we also investiguated the scope of a new polymerization reaction, the direct (hetero)arylation polymerization (DHAP). First of all, a first series of conjugated polymers was synthesized by using the TTz moiety in combination with the benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophène (BDT) moiety as comonomer. The optical, electrochemical and photovoltaic characterization of those polymers led to interesting results regarding eventual applications in photovoltaic devices. Then, the study focused on the effet of the addition of aromatic lateral groups on the TTz moiety and the utilization of diffent electron-poor or electron-rich moieties as comonomers on the polymer optical and electrochemical properties. Even though a large diversity of optical and electrochemical properties were obtained, most polymers were not good candidate for photovoltaic applications. Then the study focuses on the firsts polymers synthesized based on the BDT and the TTz moieties. From this polymer structure, we develop a new series of polymers of the same family by adding thiophene spacers between the two comonomers and by using different alkyl chain at different positions in the optic to modify the morphologie obtained once the active layer is formed in the photovoltaic device. Photovoltaic devices were fabricated from those six polymers and, by a systematic optimization process, efficiencies reaching 4.89 % have been obtained with the polymer TTz-19. Finally, during this work, a new polymerization method allowing the reduction synthetic steps for the fabrication of polymers have been used. Following studies already started in our group, we investiguated the scope of the reaction by using two new electron-poor unit never used in DHAP, the furo[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (FPD) and the selenopheno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (SePD). This study showed that the DHAP reaction can be easily and efficiently applied to those two new electron-poor moities to obtain polymers with high yields and high molecular weights
Epsilon Indi Ba, Bb: a spectroscopic study of the nearest known brown dwarfs
The discovery of Epsilon Indi Ba and Bb, a nearby binary brown dwarf system
with a main-sequence companion, allows a concerted campaign to characterise the
physical parameters of two T dwarfs providing benchmarks against which
atmospheric and evolutionary models can be tested. Some recent observations
suggest the models at low mass and intermediate age may not reflect reality
with, however, few conclusive tests.
We are carrying out a comprehensive characterisation of these, the nearest
known brown dwarfs, to allow constraints to be placed upon models of cool field
dwarfs. We present broadband photometry from the V- to M-band and the
individual spectrum of both components from 0.6-5.1 microns at a resolution of
up to R=5000. A custom analytic profile fitting routine was implemented to
extract the blended spectra and photometry of both components separated by 0.7
arcsec. We confirm the spectral types to be T1 and T6, and notably, we do not
detect lithium at 6708A in the more massive object which may be indicative both
of the age of the system and the mass of the components.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in proceedings of Cool Stars 1
The SPDE approach for spatio-temporal datasets with advection and diffusion
In the task of predicting spatio-temporal fields in environmental science
using statistical methods, introducing statistical models inspired by the
physics of the underlying phenomena that are numerically efficient is of
growing interest. Large space-time datasets call for new numerical methods to
efficiently process them. The Stochastic Partial Differential Equation (SPDE)
approach has proven to be effective for the estimation and the prediction in a
spatial context. We present here the advection-diffusion SPDE with first order
derivative in time which defines a large class of nonseparable spatio-temporal
models. A Gaussian Markov random field approximation of the solution to the
SPDE is built by discretizing the temporal derivative with a finite difference
method (implicit Euler) and by solving the spatial SPDE with a finite element
method (continuous Galerkin) at each time step. The ''Streamline Diffusion''
stabilization technique is introduced when the advection term dominates the
diffusion. Computationally efficient methods are proposed to estimate the
parameters of the SPDE and to predict the spatio-temporal field by kriging, as
well as to perform conditional simulations. The approach is applied to a solar
radiation dataset. Its advantages and limitations are discussed

Fluvial styles, palaeohydrology and modern analogues of an exhumed, Cretaceous fluvial system: Cerro Barcino Formation, Cañadón Asfalto Basin, Argentina
Superb surface exposures of a fluvial palaeochannel-belt 2-5km wide and 13km long occur in Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of the Cerro Barcino Formation (Las Plumas Member), Chubut Group, CañadĂłn Asfalto Basin, Argentina. The exceptional plan-view exposures of fluvial sandbodies allowed identification of a large number of WNW-ESE sinuous ridges that represent high-sinuosity, braided and low-sinuosity fluvial palaeochannels, crevasse and chute palaeochannels, and crevasse-splay deposits. Predominance of low-sinuosity palaeochannels and low values of the width/thickness ratio of most them suggest high stability of their margins, probably controlled by the cohesiveness of tuffaceous floodplain deposits. Morphological and sedimentological observations provide evidence of abrupt lithofacies changes in palaeochannel fills, fine-grained intercalations in multi-storey palaeochannels and occurrence of different fluvial styles, implying temporal/spatial variations in palaeodischarge and/or slope conditions. Comparison of the near-identical plan view morphology of the Cretaceous palaeochannel belt with the nearby Chubut River, plus the comparison of palaeohydrological data of the exhumed palaeochannels with hydrological data from this modern analogue, gives evidence of a very similar fluvial behaviour. This provides an integrative tool to be employed in the study of other ancient fluvial successions, including the reconstruction of palaeofluvial hydrological parameters in planetary geology.Fil: Foix, Nicolas. Sandstone petrolog y of the Castillo Formation (Albian) in the San Bernardo fold belt, Golfo San Jorge Basin, Argentina
In order to understand the spatial variations in the sedimentary petrology of the Albian Castillo Formation at outcrops, sandstone samples obtained as part of fluvial channels in three areas of the San Bernardo fold belt were analyzed. These three geological and geographical regions show distinctive variation in the fluvial system and its facies arrangement, which is also evidenced by the petrography of the unit. Varieties of quartz, feldspar and lithic fragments were identified and described in order to analyze detrital modes. These analyses, carried out in the three different regions allowed to identify small-scale drainage networks of local character (region 2) where clastic composition reflects local sources, and also other areas with well integrated drainage networks of larger scale (region 4) that reflect large regional source areas. These differences can also be observed in provenance ternary plots, with a progressive evolution of the source areas from a transitional arc field, in which samples obtained from local drainage network fall near of the non-dissected arc field to samples belonging to regional drainage networks associated to a dissected arc in the provenance diagram. The detailed analysis of the framework and associated components showed that the observed secondary porosity in sandstones is due to the desegregation and dissolution of neovolcanic rock fragments. Development of secundary porosity is effective when the sandstones are cemented by heulandite-clinoptilolite zeolites or by rim-type clays.Fil: Tunik, Maisa Andrea.
