    Frontal Plane Knee Alignment: A Call for Standardized Measurement

    Evaluations of knee alignment are useful in the diagnosis of arthritic conditions affecting the knee joint, serving also as a guide for conservative management and surgical planning. They are also fundamental to various aspects of musculo-skeletal research. Recently, there has been great interest in frontal plane alignment measures related to the pathogenesis of knee osteoarthritis (OA). Several approaches have been proposed over the years to describe and measure alignment, but the differences between them have made it difficult to compare or correlate the results of independent studies. Toward a standard approach to the measurement and reporting of alignment data that may be equally applicable to clinicians and researchers, we discuss a system of measurements based on geometric analysis of the femur, tibia, and knee joint surfaces. We also discuss a standardized methodology for measurement and computation of these parameters

    The first GCT camera for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

    The Gamma Cherenkov Telescope (GCT) is proposed to be part of the Small Size Telescope (SST) array of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). The GCT dual-mirror optical design allows the use of a compact camera of diameter roughly 0.4 m. The curved focal plane is equipped with 2048 pixels of ~0.2{\deg} angular size, resulting in a field of view of ~9{\deg}. The GCT camera is designed to record the flashes of Cherenkov light from electromagnetic cascades, which last only a few tens of nanoseconds. Modules based on custom ASICs provide the required fast electronics, facilitating sampling and digitisation as well as first level of triggering. The first GCT camera prototype is currently being commissioned in the UK. On-telescope tests are planned later this year.     The Role of Hydrogeography and Climate in the Landscape Epidemiology of West Nile Virus in New York State from 2000 to 2010

    The epidemiology and ecology of West Nile virus (WNV) have not yet been completely described. In particular, the specific roles of climate and water in the landscape in the occurrence of human WNV cases remain unknown. This study used Poisson regression to describe the relationships between WNV cases and temperature, precipitation, and the hydrogeography of the landscape in New York State from 2000 to 2010. Fully adjusted models showed that hydrogeographic area was significantly inversely associated with WNV cases (incidence rate ratio (IRR)ā€Š=ā€Š0.99; 95% C.I.ā€Š=ā€Š0.98ā€“0.997, pā€Š=ā€Š0.04), such that each one square kilometer increase in hydrogeographic area was associated with a 1% decrease in WNV incidence. This association was independent of both temperature, which was also associated with WNV incidence (IRRā€Š=ā€Š2.06; 95% C.I.ā€Š=ā€Š1.84ā€“2.31, p<0.001), and precipitation, which was not (IRRā€Š=ā€Š1.0; 95% C.I.ā€Š=ā€Š0.99ā€“1.01, pā€Š=ā€Š0.16). While the results are only suggestive due to the county-level aggregated data, these findings do identify a potentially important surveillance signal in the landscape epidemiology of WNV infection

    Intravenous iron for heart failure, iron deficiency definitions, and clinical response:the IRONMAN trial

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: What is the relationship between blood tests for iron deficiency, including anaemia, and the response to intravenous iron in patients with heart failure?METHODS: In the IRONMAN trial, 1137 patients with heart failure, ejection fraction ā‰¤ 45%, and either serum ferritin &lt; 100ā€…Āµg/L or transferrin saturation (TSAT) &lt; 20% were randomized to intravenous ferric derisomaltose (FDI) or usual care. Relationships were investigated between baseline anaemia severity, ferritin and TSAT, to changes in haemoglobin from baseline to 4 months, Minnesota Living with Heart Failure (MLwHF) score and 6-minute walk distance achieved at 4 months, and clinical events, including heart failure hospitalization (recurrent) or cardiovascular death.RESULTS: The rise in haemoglobin after administering FDI, adjusted for usual care, was greater for lower baseline TSAT (Pinteraction &lt; .0001) and ferritin (Pinteraction = .028) and more severe anaemia (Pinteraction = .014). MLwHF scores at 4 months were somewhat lower (better) with FDI for more anaemic patients (overall Pinteraction = .14; physical Pinteraction = .085; emotional Pinteraction = .043) but were not related to baseline TSAT or ferritin. Blood tests did not predict difference in achieved walking distance for those randomized to FDI compared to control. The absence of anaemia or a TSAT ā‰„ 20% was associated with lower event rates and little evidence of benefit from FDI. More severe anaemia or TSAT &lt; 20%, especially when ferritin was ā‰„100ā€…Āµg/L, was associated with higher event rates and greater absolute reductions in events with FDI, albeit not statistically significant.CONCLUSIONS: This hypothesis-generating analysis suggests that anaemia or TSAT &lt; 20% with ferritin &gt; 100ā€…Āµg/L might identify patients with heart failure who obtain greater benefit from intravenous iron. This interpretation requires confirmation.</p

    The Development of a Code for Australian Psychologists

View all references) requires the newly formed Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) ā€œto develop or approve standards, codes and guidelines.ā€ In 2010 the PsyBA decided to initially adopt the Australian Psychological Society\u27s (APS) Code of Ethics (200711. Australian Psychological Society . 2007 . Code of ethics , Melbourne, , Australia : Author . View all references) and develop a new code in the future with the involvement of key stakeholders without deciding what the nature of this code will be. The PsyBA now has to decide exactly how it will proceed in future. My aim in this article is to examine the options available to the PsyBA by exploring the definition and function of codes; presenting a history of the APS Code; and considering approaches that had been followed in Europe, Israel, New Zealand, and South Africa

    Attention Performance in an Epidemiological Sample of Urban Children: The Role of Gender and Verbal Intelligence

    We administered a comprehensive attentional battery to an epidemiologically defined sample of 435 first and second-grade children to assess the influence of gender and verbal intelligence on attention. The battery included three versions of the continuous performance test (CPT), two digit cancellation tasks, three subtests from the WISC-R, and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. The results indicated that both gender and intelligence had an impact on attentional performance. Girls performed better than boys; they made fewer errors on the CPT and obtained higher scores on the digit cancellation task and the Coding subtest of the WISC-R. Children with higher verbal intelligence also performed better on the attentional tests, but this advantage was not observed across measures or levels of performance. For example, children with limited verbal skills performed significantly worse than their peers only in measures with high processing demands(the degraded CPT and the distraction version of the digit cancellation task)

    Rapid Identification of Malaria Vaccine Candidates Based on Ī±-Helical Coiled Coil Protein Motif

    To identify malaria antigens for vaccine development, we selected Ī±-helical coiled coil domains of proteins predicted to be present in the parasite erythrocytic stage. The corresponding synthetic peptides are expected to mimic structurally ā€œnativeā€ epitopes. Indeed the 95 chemically synthesized peptides were all specifically recognized by human immune sera, though at various prevalence. Peptide specific antibodies were obtained both by affinity-purification from malaria immune sera and by immunization of mice. These antibodies did not show significant cross reactions, i.e., they were specific for the original peptide, reacted with native parasite proteins in infected erythrocytes and several were active in inhibiting in vitro parasite growth. Circular dichroism studies indicated that the selected peptides assumed partial or high Ī±-helical content. Thus, we demonstrate that the bioinformatics/chemical synthesis approach described here can lead to the rapid identification of molecules which target biologically active antibodies, thus identifying suitable vaccine candidates. This strategy can be, in principle, extended to vaccine discovery in a wide range of other pathogens

    Manganese superoxide dismutase Ala-9Val polymorphism and risk of breast cancer in a population-based caseā€“control study of African Americans and whites

    INTRODUCTION: A polymorphism in the manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) gene, Ala-9Val, has been examined in association with breast cancer risk in several epidemiologic studies. Results suggest that the Ala allele increases the risk of breast cancer and modifies the effects of environmental exposures that produce oxidative damage to DNA. METHODS: We examined the role of the MnSOD Ala-9Val polymorphism in a population-based caseā€“control study of invasive and in situ breast cancer in North Carolina. Genotypes were evaluated for 2025 cases (760 African Americans and 1265 whites) and for 1812 controls (677 African Americans and 1135 whites). RESULTS: The odds ratio for MnSOD Ala/Ala versus any MnSOD Val genotypes was not elevated in African Americans (odds ratio = 0.9, 95% confidence interval = 0.7ā€“1.2) or in whites (odds ratio = 1.0, 95% confidence interval = 0.8ā€“1.2). Greater than additive joint effects were observed for the Ala/Ala genotype and smoking, radiation to the chest, and occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. Antagonism was observed between the Ala/Ala genotype and the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. CONCLUSIONS: The MnSOD genotype may contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer in the presence of specific environmental exposures. These results provide further evidence for the importance of reactive oxygen species and of oxidative DNA damage in the etiology of breast cancer
