The Kumaraswamy Marshal-Olkin Family of Distributions
We introduce a new family of continuous distributions called the Kumaraswamy Marshal-Olkin generalized family of distributions. We study some mathematical properties of this family. Its density function is symmetrical, left-skewed, right-skewed and reversed-J shaped, and has constant, increasing, decreasing, upside-down bathtub, bathtub and S-shaped hazard rate. We present some special models and investigate the asymptotics and shapes of the family. We derive a power series for the quantile function and obtain explicit expressions for the moments, generating function, mean deviations, two types of entropies and order statistics. Some useful characterizations of the family are also proposed. The method of maximum likelihood is used to estimate the model parameters. We illustrate the importance of the family by means of two applications to real data sets
A New Weibull-G Family of Distributions
Statistical analysis of lifetime data is an important topic in reliability engineering, biomedical and social sciences and others. We introduce a new generator based on the Weibull random variable called the new Weibull-G family. We study some of its mathematical properties. Its density function can be symmetrical, left-skewed, right-skewed, bathtub and reversed-J shaped, and has increasing, decreasing, bathtub, upside-down bathtub, J, reversed-J and S shaped hazard rates. Some special models are presented. We obtain explicit expressions for the ordinary and incomplete moments, quantile and generating functions, Renyi entropy, order statistics and reliability. Three useful characterizations based on truncated moments are also proposed for the new family. The method of maximum likelihood is used to estimate the model parameters. We illustrate the importance of the family by means of two applications to real data sets
Transverse Chiral Optical Forces by Chiral Surface Plasmon Polaritons
Recently the new concepts of transverse spin angular momentum and Belinfante
spin momentum of evanescent waves have drawn considerable attention. Here, we
investigate these novel physical properties of electromagnetic fields in the
context of locally excited surface plasmon polaritons. We demonstrate, both
analytically and numerically, that locally excited surface plasmon polaritons
possess transverse spin angular momentum and Belinfante momentum with rich and
non-trivial characteristics. We also show that the transverse spin angular
momentum of locally excited surface plasmon polaritons leads to the emergence
of transverse chiral forces in opposite directions for chiral objects of
different handedness. The magnitude of such a transverse force is comparable to
the optical gradient force and scattering forces. This finding may pave the way
for realization of optical separation of chiral biomolecules
Experimental Analysis of Algorithms for Coflow Scheduling
Modern data centers face new scheduling challenges in optimizing job-level
performance objectives, where a significant challenge is the scheduling of
highly parallel data flows with a common performance goal (e.g., the shuffle
operations in MapReduce applications). Chowdhury and Stoica introduced the
coflow abstraction to capture these parallel communication patterns, and
Chowdhury et al. proposed effective heuristics to schedule coflows efficiently.
In our previous paper, we considered the strongly NP-hard problem of minimizing
the total weighted completion time of coflows with release dates, and developed
the first polynomial-time scheduling algorithms with O(1)-approximation ratios.
In this paper, we carry out a comprehensive experimental analysis on a
Facebook trace and extensive simulated instances to evaluate the practical
performance of several algorithms for coflow scheduling, including the
approximation algorithms developed in our previous paper. Our experiments
suggest that simple algorithms provide effective approximations of the optimal,
and that the performance of our approximation algorithms is relatively robust,
near optimal, and always among the best compared with the other algorithms, in
both the offline and online settings.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, 11 table
Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) model for seismic vulnerability assessment (SVA) of urban residential buildings
© 2018 by the authors. Earthquakes are among the most catastrophic natural geo-hazards worldwide and endanger numerous lives annually. Therefore, it is vital to evaluate seismic vulnerability beforehand to decrease future fatalities. The aim of this research is to assess the seismic vulnerability of residential houses in an urban region on the basis of the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) model, including the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and geographical information system (GIS). Tabriz city located adjacent to the North Tabriz Fault (NTF) in North-West Iran was selected as a case study. The NTF is one of the major seismogenic faults in the north-western part of Iran. First, several parameters such as distance to fault, percent of slope, and geology layers were used to develop a geotechnical map. In addition, the structural construction materials, building materials, size of building blocks, quality of buildings and buildings-floors were used as key factors impacting on the building’s structural vulnerability in residential areas. Subsequently, the AHP technique was adopted to measure the priority ranking, criteria weight (layers), and alternatives (classes) of every criterion through pair-wise comparison at all levels. Lastly, the layers of geotechnical and spatial structures were superimposed to design the seismic vulnerability map of buildings in the residential area of Tabriz city. The results showed that South and Southeast areas of Tabriz city exhibit low to moderate vulnerability, while some regions of the north-eastern area are under severe vulnerability conditions. In conclusion, the suggested approach offers a practical and effective evaluation of Seismic Vulnerability Assessment (SVA) and provides valuable information that could assist urban planners during mitigation and preparatory phases of less examined areas in many other regions around the world
